To actually decide not to go on holiday tomorrow

Lauriefairycake · 30/07/2010 17:23

It's going to rain heavily in the Lake District for the next 5 days (that's as far as the BBC forecast.

I don't like rain and my hair goes frizzy and curly in it.

And I especially don't like hiking or walking round lakes in the rain.

When it rains heavily at home I stay in and play on the computer mumsnet and watch tv.

Where I'm going there is no internet and the tv has only very limited freeview channels.

I'm actually seriously pissed off and not wanting to go - it is not a holiday if I have to play board games with dd/dh and my MIL and SIL.

(I have pmt)

Would you like to swap lives for a little while? It hasn't rained properly here for the last two months. Every morning I pull back the curtains and it is blue sky and sunshine and 30 degrees. I am a temperate soul and long for the Lakes and rain.
I am Shropshire born and bred too.......the most beautiful place on earth

NoahAndTheWhale · 30/07/2010 19:33

I'm sure it is lovely. DH and I went there pre-children (in 2000) and had a wonderful time But with two small children qnd continued rain it was a little less lovely

bran · 30/07/2010 19:39

Buy ankle wellies if you have fat calves. If you have waterproof trousers it ought to be enough to stop your feet getting soggy.

pirateparty · 30/07/2010 19:51

Yes, I know Noah - we had a similar experience in Wales earlier this year - continuous rain and small children are not a good mix.

Just felt I had to stick up for Salop; I love it here. And so does ds because every time we go out we see a tractor...

Where in Shropshire Satin?

SatinandTat · 30/07/2010 19:59

Between Oswestry and Shrewsbury. Despite being born there (or maybe because) I still have the curse of the frizzy hair that Laurie mentioned.

pirateparty · 30/07/2010 20:09

Lovely part Satin - hope you get to come back regularly!

ponceydog · 30/07/2010 21:16

Go. Any holiday is better than none.

Get a pile of good books.
Research best pubs and cafes in teh area where you will sit and read books.
Find out about Nice Art Galleries (ideally with cafes attached)
Do you like cooking or baking? I do and would be tempted to offer to make cookies and cherry cake etc etc for everyone else returning wet from walking in teh pissing rain.
I haven't been to the proper lake district for eons. Is there a wordsworth house? (I know his poertry was a bit shite.) Is there a gingerbread making place in Grasmere or was that a dream?

LittleMissHissyFit · 30/07/2010 21:25

i'm in wales as we speak! North west wales and it's cold, have open fire going... Lovely!

Yes it did hammer down today, but it's still glorious! I'd prefer cool over hot any day. But i did use to live in Egypt, and am so over blistering heat.

Mind you, i am hoping to do one day at the seaside/rockpools, so am wishing for a sunnyish day at some point...

But i'm here with ds only, dh at home, moaning about everything in life to himself... I'd pay good money NOT to go away with dh and any family... His are thankfully all dead, or extended leeches in egypt. I'm enjoying the peace and quiet of an evening... And a few glasses of course!

It sounds hideous - for starters nothing on earth would possess me to go on holiday with either MIL OR SIL, never mind both. I like them both and we get on, but holidays? Gah.

Where are you staying? Can you just hole up in the hotel/B&B and let the others do the outdoor stuff?

Have you got any thermals that you can take with you to wear under normal clothes and therefore be warm? Walking boots rather than wellies? I'm sure you'll be able to buy some up there fairly easily.

Schulte · 30/07/2010 21:36

Stay put. Don't go further north than Watford Gap. How many times have I left sunny London and gone up to the Peak District only to spend the weekend freezing my arse off in the pouring rain while back home in London everyone was having barbecues and rolling around in the parks!

compo · 30/07/2010 21:39

It's great sitting inside drinking wine watching rain thrash against the window
roll on winter

lets face it if it's sunny you'll have to walk up hills

onepieceoflollipop · 30/07/2010 21:40

Find a lovely warm launderette. That was the highlight of my week in Devon 3 years ago.

Heavy rain, heavily pregnant, caravan that was rocking all night long. (not caused by me and dh, it was gale force winds)

Some idiot in the club/"entertainment" (I use the word loosely) squared up to dh and told him firmly to get his missus to "breathe in" so people could get past my chair. I stood up calmly and once he saw my 35 week+ tummy and my general air of pissed-offness he backed down.

Anyway, I haven't been in a caravan since!

Hope you have a fab time whatever you do. I am liking the suggestions of local hotel with spa, staying home to bake cakes. Go out all day shopping "pretend" to look for wellies.

We just got back from 2 weeks at a rainy fishing village vacation. Only 2 days it was sunny and clear, the rest were rainy/foggy/drizzly. We had a nice time anyways, we shopped and ate out every day. Plus had fires at night and watched dvd's. It did have internet however, as I only looked at cottages that had internet.
Hope you will have a nice time, rain or not.
(I didn't bring "wellies" I just wore waterproof flip flops when needed.

gtamom · 30/07/2010 23:32

PS. It was actually a week at the rainy cottage, the other week was the drive there and back, which was mostly sunny and hot.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/07/2010 07:38

Forecast schmorecast.

It said it was going to rain for the whole week of our recent holiday in Dumfries and Galloway.

Every day it was quite nice and it only rained on the last day!!

hester · 31/07/2010 08:00

Oh god, don't go.

dh and I once had a week in chuffin Corsica. It rained the whole time and our holiday flat turned out to be a basement - no, actually a cellar, damp and cold with almost no natural daylight. The local food was shite and the people unfriendly.

We stayed in bed, read books, and bickered rather a lot.

Could have done that in Croydon, but with better TV.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2010 08:19

looks quite nice today

Lauriefairycake · 31/07/2010 08:35

I am now up and packing

I was up til 1am doing washing - there is still some in the machine

You lot are hilarious - some of your comments are fantastic - particularly I roared at "I'd rather eat sick than play board games with my SIL". I love my SIL wholeheartedly but she does cry when she loses at board games (uber-competitive-piss-taking-family)

Naturally I didn't book this holiday - we are staying in his Aunts cottage - many moons ago I said we'd try somewhere different than Dorset/Cornwall which is how this 'holiday' was conceived by my MIL.

DD is 12 unfortunately so all those who have said 'wave dh and dc cheerfully off on a hike/bike ride while you sit and eat cake' will have sympathy - she will complain WAY more than I will at the rain and cramped quarters.

I am making blackberry pancakes for breakfast - trying to get into the spirit of 'holidaying' - luckily it's raining here too.

Hoping to set off at 12.......

Have a great time!

Sparkletastic · 31/07/2010 08:47

Please report in when you get home. I'm being forced to go on holiday to Norfolk with my in-laws in a few weeks time and I feel a sense of deep despair about the whole event

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 31/07/2010 08:52

Laurie I felt your pain, we were supposed to be going to stay in Sedgewick for a few days at my aunts house.

Looked at the weather and the traffic queues and decided to stay put, just going on day trips from down here in the SW, at least 7*c warmer, not as wet, and home no unpacking!

But, we are going camping next week, so fingers crossed

traceybath · 31/07/2010 08:52

Good luck laurie!
