police community support officers 'helpful' parenting advice!

Was walking back home after visiting the shops today and witnessed this (yes im nosy!)

Two community support officers dithering outside of a house on a quiet street where a baby was alseep in his pram in the gated front garden - no parent around.

They looked like two 12 year old boys and decided after a while to knock on the door and inform the mother that she was being totally irresponsable and did she know what could of happened...

She was sitting in the front room where she could see baby from window!

She was non too pleased with their helpful advice and told them so in non too uncertain terms!

Yes i was walking slowly so i could see what happened!

I didnt blame her for this and think she was right in saying that they should maybe be up the park instead concertrating their efforts on the underage drinkers as its the school holidays!

Were we being unreasonable? What would your response have been?

How is the back garden safe? someone could climb over the fence from another house.

How is the bedroom safe? someone could get a ladder and get in the window.

Best put bars on all the windows and shackle the baby to the cot to be on the safe side.

There is always risk and if you aim for zero risk then eventually you will realise the only way is to not have kids at all.

Sadly there are parents out there who would leave a child out without adequate supervision, for a long time. The police probably just wanted to check that this wasn't the case. But IMO they shouldn't have been dishing out unwanted advice if the mother was watching.

good grief. i leave mine outside all the time, in the front garden.

why? because my double pushchair doens't fit through the front door.
and if they'r ein the single then even if i did get them in they'd be woken up by one of the others within minutes.

they sleep well outside

i have no reason to suspect that a random passer-by will spot the pram, come to see if there is a baby in it and on discovering there is, decide to abduct it.
all without me noticing

YABU. And she evidently wasn't watching well enough if they had to knock on her door.

why would you run outside just because 2 police officers were OUTSIDE your garden talking?

if they had been in the garden, i am sure she would have gone out. but OP says they were dithering outside.
