to think Mumsnet shouldn't have animated adverts?

Don't know about you, but it really hurts my eyes when I'm trying to read the threads and the adverts on the right hand side are flashing.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking they should think of our eyesight and have static images instead?

They have been driving me nuts too, as they hold up the page loading quite frequently too.

CardyMow · 30/07/2010 08:23

Try having photosensitive epilepsy....it's been bugging me, to the point where when certain adverts are on here, I can't come on at all, but I don't know how to do anything about it? MNHQ...if you read this...please bear in mind that flashing adverts + epilepsy = seizures.

Shaz10 · 30/07/2010 08:25

Some people much cleverer than I may be along to explain ad blocker. Not really in the spirit (as MN is free) but if it helps I don't block - so the ads do get to some of us!

netbook · 30/07/2010 08:55

There's a Thomas one flashing at me at the moment, it's particularly fast and visually offensive!

SpiderObsession · 30/07/2010 09:34

I have to be careful too (epileptic also). It's the quick flashing that effects me. I tend to reduce the screen size if anything starts to flash.

Although I did laugh at the Toy Story animation with the dinosaur and the pig.

waitingforbedtime · 30/07/2010 09:39

yes *and8 ds keeps wanting to see the Toy Story one a million times...

champagnesupernova · 30/07/2010 10:25

YABU - the ads are what makes MN free.
I agree that it must be problematic for epileptics but surely it's not just MN who carries them?

leavingonajetplane · 30/07/2010 10:49

It must be very difficult with epilepsy.

If you scroll down to Snorbs posts on this thread there are easy instructions to follow to use Ad Block

I haven't got them on my screen.........I have no idea how or if I stopped them though. Not much help am I?

emptyshell · 30/07/2010 15:12

Use Firefox, get the adblock plus extension for it and right click to block anything that's annoying you.

JustineMumsnet · 02/08/2010 12:21

Hi all, sorry about the flashing ads - they are very popular with advertisers, as they do tend to generate a better click through rate. Of course we are very happy for you to block them if you're epileptic - do let [email protected] know if you're having trouble with this.

On a wider note we are thinking about offering a Mumsnet ad free version in which you could pay an annual fee to see the site with no display ads - would that appeal to folks?

netbook · 03/08/2010 15:58

Hi Justine, I don't mind ads and realise they are a necessary evil, it's the moving ones I object to. I don't normally notice them but the Thomas one is particularly bad and the Cbeebies one just annoying (who wants to see a kid waving at you once you've put your own to bed).

Not sure if I would pay for an ad free version, depends on how much.
