to think that shaving your 'lady parts' is no different from shaving your legs?

I have seen so many people on here say how it is offensive to shave your vagina, that it's conforming to the porn star image, that men who like it are strange/perverted, it's not natural etc.

But I have to ask, do those of you who take this 'natural' approach with your erm..area, not shave legs or armpits too? Btw I am not referring to those of you who keep it natural just because you/your partner prefer it that way, I am addressing those people who see it as offensive or wrong etc. Because in this case, surely you would be hypocritical to shave other areas?

I wouldn't want to shave my vagine whatever my views. Far too painful

bronze · 29/07/2010 15:36

of course I mean vagina

GabbyLoggon · 29/07/2010 15:40

the two things are very different within our culture. But it is a private matter. (No pun intended)

CoronaAndLime · 29/07/2010 15:41

It is different to shaving your legs though.
I would rather nick my knee than my foof lol!

Didnt know that some people find it offensive. I would find it odd for somone to be offended by what 'hair style' somone else has on a privet part of them

MandyMcFly · 29/07/2010 15:43

Oh Gabby for cultural/religious reasons obviously that's different and I totally respect that.

Corona exactly, but on porn threads, and others remotely connected with sex, there is always people who have said that it's unnatural, it's for a man's pleasure, it's perverse as it makes you look like a little girl. All of these things, and I just don't really see how it's any different from other kinds of personal grooming in that way.

Personally I wouldn't shave down there....eeeew to itchy regrowth! But that's not what you're asking so that isn't a relevant answer I guess.

MandyMcFly · 29/07/2010 15:48

It's weird MrsC because people have always said that, but I've never had any problems with shaving down there! Never uncomfortable.

OP posts:
Morloth · 29/07/2010 15:53

I don't do either but I do keep my pits trimmed so that they don't catch on clothes.

As long as no-one wants me to do it, I don't care if people wax/shave/bleach/dye/whatever. If it makes you happy then do it.

I wouldn't be with someone who wanted me to shave cause I ain't gonna do it.

minipie · 29/07/2010 15:55

Actually Mandy I do see your point.

Grown women have pubes. Grown women have leg hair. We shouldn't feel pressured to get rid of either. In that sense it is just as illogical to shave legs as to shave bits.

I think the difference is that our legs are on show to the world. Whereas our bits are only on show to our DPs. So the presumption is, we must be shaving that area to please our DPs. Which then leads to the question of why would any man want his partner to be hairless there ... and does it mean he prefers his partner to look like a pre pubescent child etc etc. Fact is, some women just prefer having hairless bits, just as some women (most) prefer having hairless legs.

In an ideal world of course we'd all feel comfortable leaving the whole of our bodies in their natural, healthy, hairy state.

OrmRenewed · 29/07/2010 15:57

Yes it is. It's higher. And more fiddly.

MrsBadger · 29/07/2010 15:59

[sigh] re vagina

your vagina is the actual tunnel
it's on the inside
it has no hair

I suspect you mean your vulva, or indeed your pubic mound.

slushy · 29/07/2010 16:02

I don't shave my legs I never have and have therefor never needed to. I shave my pits because they sweat too much if unshaven. I will not shave my vulva as it is really itchy growing back and you get ingrown hair where the knicker elastic rubs.

LynetteScavo · 29/07/2010 16:03

It's no different to shaving your legs or arm pits.

And if I did give myself a Brazillian it certainly isn't for DH (or anyone else, I mean who's going to see?), it's for me.

DuelingFanjo · 29/07/2010 16:07

I just wonder what makes people decide to do it. Then again I am not very hairy so I guess people who have some kind of wild forest down there might need to tame it a little. Maybe those people with an uncontrollable bush are just solving a problem with the razor.

It seems to have become the norm though and I wonder why/how this hapened? I guess shaving your armpits somehow became the norm in the UK (it's not the norm in some other European countries) over time.

Butterbur · 29/07/2010 16:14

The shaving rash is very different.

There is a woman at my gym who has designs in hers (same as you often see on boy's heads).

I did briefly consider that but my natural laziness asserted itself and I couldn't be arsed.

curlymama · 29/07/2010 16:24

I can see why sometimes people find it a bit wierd to remove all the hair from down there, it does seem a bit pre pubescent (sp?)

I happily have a Brazilian bikini wax though, but shaving either gives me rash or ingrowing hairs. Definately not sexy.

hairytriangle · 29/07/2010 16:28

I don't really care what parts other people shave, and I don't really care if people care about what parts I shave!

I don't see it as natural, un-natural, odd, normal or anything. There is a lady at work who has the whole lot waxed off and it always gets mentioned on girly work nights out - she's flipping hilarious with her stories - personally I couldn't wax another person's foof or have another person wax mine, so I'm kind of fascinated by the whole thing!

jobhuntersrus · 29/07/2010 16:29

I have tried on and off over the years to shave down there and always end up with ingrowing hairs which look awful and nasty shaving rash. I preferred being hairy to that. I do trim with small scissors so the hair is quite short but have yet to find a way to remove any without nasty side effects. Dh couldn't give two hoots if I am as hairy as a yeti or totally bald, at least that is what he says.
Underarms and legs are often on show and look much nicer without hair. Underarm shaving also gives me ingrowing hairs and red rash if i do it too frequently. I try to leave as long as I can so minimum a few days, more like a week if I can get away with it.

What is the best way to remove pubic hair?

DuelingFanjo · 29/07/2010 16:34

several people on mumsnet have said that they want a wax or a shave prior to giving birth though. Why would this be if not because they want to present a certain 'look' and believe it to be more favourable that going au natrel in front of the medical staff? Surely in this case it's as much for the benefit of other people as it is for the woman herself.

why do so many women think a tiedied up or stripped bare vulva is somehow better and more acceptable?

hairytriangle · 29/07/2010 16:35

I'd be really embarrassed to show a shaved foof to a medical person LOL.

Morloth · 29/07/2010 16:37

I did feel bad when my lovely MW was trying a bit of reflexology and I realised I hadn't trimmed my toenails for an extended period (couldn't reach them!).

muggglewump · 29/07/2010 16:37

YANBU
I epilated mine just this morning.
I prefer the way it feels-fresher and cleaner.

I'm fed up with reading that it means that you must want to be a little girl and men who like this are paedophiles.
What rot.

It's my body and my hair, and I'll do whatever I damn well please with it.
