We went to Turkey. There are hundreds of dogs. Mainly just wandering about unattended. All impeccably trained. Yet even though these dogs wander about alone, no one ever complains about them, because they never bother anyone and there is no dog shit. Anywhere. I didn't even see one single poo.

They even have the buses issue down to a tee. The first bus I was on a Turkish girl aged about 7/8 jumped up to let a British pregnant woman sit down. There were plenty of young, English males who never bothered

The second bus the same happened again. A couple of elderly Turkish ladies got on the bus. Immediately all the Turks on the bus vacated their seats to let these ladies sit down.

I though it was us English who were meant to be known for our manners and love of animals?

Hmm.

There's lots of stuff about Turkey which aint so savoury.

Would rather be in the UK, tbh. I don't think this country is that bad. I for one am happy that dogs don't roam the streets at will.

breatheslowly · 29/07/2010 12:00

Too many chinese takeaways ?

ShinyAndNew · 29/07/2010 12:07

Oh I know there are plenty things great about Britain and that we are far better off than Turkey, but if an 8 year old girl can manage to let a pregnant women sit, surely we can?

If they can manage to keep their streets clean, despite the fact that the dogs are mainly unsupervised, why can't we manage the same?

I teach my dc to get up from their seats when another person is standing. To me it is polite, and my parents expected that of me. Many parents do not teach their dc that, its not the kids fault

CatIsSleepy · 29/07/2010 12:24

hmm, where do turkish dogs poo then?
(now that's a sentence i didn't anticipate typing today )

CindersIsNotApoet · 29/07/2010 12:27

in the bushes

they are not on leads.

that is for catsisleepy...

CatIsSleepy · 29/07/2010 12:27

thanks cinders, I feel suitably enlightened

CindersIsNotApoet · 29/07/2010 12:30

tis okay...

greece is the same for stray dogs.

CatIsSleepy · 29/07/2010 12:31
CindersIsNotApoet · 29/07/2010 12:33

CatIsSleepy · 29/07/2010 12:59

alright! I'll just start packing...

BoojaB · 29/07/2010 13:06

Sadly, Turkey and Greece are not known for good animal welfare standards, particularly with regards cats and dogs.

VinegarTits · 29/07/2010 13:15

you think stray dogs wandering the streets is a good thing?

ive seen plenty of people give up seats on buses in Britain

last time i was in Turkey i saw a kid shitting on the street, and the parent came along and picked the kid up and left the shit behind

coraltoes · 29/07/2010 13:35

In India you have cows wondering the street...i can tell you they dont poo in the bushes

Tis the most beautiful country I've ever been to though, regardless of the cow poo.

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/07/2010 13:40

To be honest, OP, you may well have gone to a touristy part of Turkey, where some poor fellas will be paid to sweep the streets and keep it looking nice for the tourists at the crack of dawn (paid a pittance as well).

There are plently of people in the UK who stand up on buses for pregnant people and the elderly.

Comparing the UK unfavourably to somewhere like Turkey is a bit misguided.

Anyway, Shiney, your just a bit pissed off because you have just come back off holiday to the wind and rain, aren't you

hobbgoblin · 29/07/2010 13:43

Okay so the snapshot holiday experience may not be the best counter example to all that is Britain...

However, if I am correct in guessing the point that OP is making, there is an air of disaffection and disgruntlement here and also a greater sense of community having broken down.

For all the positives we have regarding equal opps and human rights, we have equal if not greater measure of abuse of these statutes.

ShinyAndNew · 29/07/2010 13:43

The dogs aren't stray, they are owned by bar owners and shop owners. They are just allowed to have little wander.

Yes I am pissed off because I am back off holidays. But t'is not the rain that is bothering me. T'is money. DH lost his job while we were away. He was on a short term contract and the contract ended. The weather is quite mild here. I still have my holiday clothes on

Oh bugger that is shit news.

I hope he finds a new job soon.

Nefret · 02/08/2010 13:05

ShinyAndNew, you ar absolutley right about the manners of peope in Turkey, they have so much more repsect for older people, pregnant women etc. than people here do. I spent the first 7 months of my pregnancy living in Turkey and as soon as I was showing I would always be offered a seat by men, women and children. I came back to London for the birth and had to travel on a bus when I was 8½ months pregnant and I had to stand the whole way because nobody would let me sit down.

As for the dog poo, the streets are a lot cleaner in Turkey because they are cleaner because they come round 3 times a day to empty the bins and clean the streets, cleanliness is part of their culture out there.

Yes, there are many things that are better in the UK but there are many things that aren't too. People are a lot more selfish over here I find.

MorrisZapp · 02/08/2010 13:07

London isn't the UK, like Paris isn't France.

In Edinburgh pregnant women and old folks get given seats. If you don't get given a seat you can politely ask, and then you will be given.

You can't base judgements of the 'British people' on your experience of the London Underground. That's something different entirely.

ProfYaffle · 02/08/2010 13:12

We were in London on Thursday, on the tube I saw a boy of about 13 offer his seat to an older lady, also had a young man stand to one side and say 'oh no, after you' as dh and I were getting onto the tube.

Manners aren't completely dead yet

Dinkytinky · 02/08/2010 13:22

The last time I offered my seat to a very preggo lady she snapped 'i'm not dying thankyou' at me!! Know what you mean about manners though- in turkey theyare very polite I think!
