here For anyone who is fed up of the lack of affordable boys clothes. Sorry to post it here but there were a few people in AIBU yesterday who wanted a campaign against this.

Dreamingofsun is so right.
boys clothing and accessories are diabolical IMO.

If I had the money, the know how and resorces, I would start up a boys clothing line.

ForMashGetSmash · 04/11/2010 10:24

Nope...dont worry about it Purplepidgin...that link just takes me to my own FB home page! When you're up and running more, maybe you could share them via a new thread?

butterflymum · 04/11/2010 10:32

Just a random thought.....and this being from a mum of three boys......

Is it us , the parents, who want there to be more choice because we like to have/feel the need to have such.....or because our boys are always wanting more choice and bemoaning what little there is?

I know at times I too have said "Urghhhhhhh....why are there more girls clothes here than boys?".......especially in Sales......but when I then think about it.....my boys themselves never actually seem too concerned by how little choice there is.

Maybe I have just been conditioned by what I see around me to think there should be more choice in boys clothes when actually, deep down, I believe that generally, nowadays, in everything from clothes to cars, there is really, in most cases, too much choice and we could all manage fine with less, yet still have individual style.

dreamingofsun · 04/11/2010 11:08

butter - my local M&S - which is a decent sized branch - the boys children's section was about the size of my kitchen and most of it was aimed at younger children - a 10-14 year old is not going to wear the same styles as a 5 year old - as we both know - i too have 3 boys. we are talking about maybe 10 jumpers to choose from - assuming they had them in the correct size which they didn't. so in reality prob down to about 4 jumpers. and next doesn't stock anything in shops for this age group.

mind you its saving me money as nothing to buy!!

4plus1 · 04/11/2010 11:23

I really like okaidi for boys clothes. I know they are a bit pricey, but they really do last and if you have more than one boy worth buying to pass down. I have four boys so everything gets passed down, some stuff has kept so well its since been passed to friends ds for a 5th go!

Spinkle · 04/11/2010 11:28

My DS is a whopper. He's 6 and is autistic. I don't think it's appropriate to dress him in urban sk8ter dude stuff or commando gear. Just ordinary non chav clothes will be just fine.

Can I find any? Can I heck as like.

His behaviour makes him stand out but I don't want him to look like 'the weird kid' because of his clothes.

I hate the nasty printed t-shirts with monsters, tv characters or stupid logo ('here comes trouble' ones are really bad -that good old self fulfilling prophecy)

Just plain, well made, comfortable stuff needed...

stillbobbysgirl · 04/11/2010 11:31

here here - I really wish some retailers would actually do some research into this and start providing what customers need/want

SlightlyJaded · 04/11/2010 11:54

I would like:

Bright colours
Classic jumpers - crew/v-neck: plain and in good colours like bottle green, orange, lilac, soft grey, camel
Ditto cardigans
Trousers other than jeans/combats
Polo shirts in bright colours
Stripes fine - but everything? Really?
Stylish things like classic raincoat but with a beautiful print lining
Not a Ben Fucking Ten in sight
Nor a skull or superhero

I thank yuou

blackeyedsusan · 04/11/2010 12:35

just been to tescos, lovely dresses for parties bought one several weeks ago for dd. but.... only one non casual thing in the boys 1-7 section, shirt with tie grey and black, not thrilled. went and asked. shop floor staff didn't know. went to customer services with 2 yr old. waited nearly 10 mins and 3 calls for staff who didnt turn up. finally found one person who has given me the free number to head office customer services. 0800 5055 55)

just rung. sod all help. boys stuff comes in from 1st nov great but girls stuff is in already. no number available for head office. but an address. can i be bothered probably not. but tescos if you are reading your customer service to small boys is rubbish and sexist. if girls clothes didn't come in there might be more of an out cry, but i'm just pissed off by the whole hanging around waiting for an answer thing now to be objective.

NordicPrincess · 04/11/2010 12:36

I find that girls clothes are so much more expensive and so much nicer! there are hardly any boys clothes around that dont have skulls or ben 10 on them

ForMashGetSmash · 04/11/2010 12:37

Rubbish isn't it blackeyedsusan? What formal wear would you like to see?

bruffin · 04/11/2010 12:49

BHS is good for boys formal wear.

I had no problems with getting DS clothes when he was little, but most of it came from Vertbaudet and La Redoute, lots of bright colours and lovely quality. However the worst time for clothes was when he fitted into 10 yrs + and then there was absolutely nothing. It was if boys of that age didn't exist. I did then discover Debenhams which wasn't bad for older boys. He has just turned 15 and has been in adult size clothes for the last year and loves River Island.
To be honest I can't stand the dreadfulclashy stripey stuff that Kids Should be kids produces, its trying too hard and really lacks imagination.

melikalikimaka · 04/11/2010 13:07

I stared at two pretty girls woolen coats in Dunnes at a very reasonable price and found myself wondering, why don't they make great wool coats for boys? [Instead of those horrible nylon puffa things] It is ridiculous. I have spent most of my boys life looking in BHS, Next, M&S, the rest are abysmal.
I despair when I find it hard to find the boys section as all you can see is a sea of pink and red everywhere.

It's just not fair, Mums want our boys to look great too!

BHS were a life saver for me. They have generous jeans, little suits, (faux) leather jackets, shirt and ties, hoodies, funny t-shirts, funky belts etc. just what they want. They don't want to wear tat or sludge green, grey, etc.
Alas, my youngest is now into small mens t-shirts and has big feet, so now do not have problem.

But retailers, get a grip will you!!!!Angry

BangingNoise · 04/11/2010 13:11

I find that Next have a good range for boys, and lots of colours too.

melikalikimaka · 04/11/2010 13:11

You are all so right, there is a massive hole in the 10 - 14 years market for boys.

Action needed now, Sir Alan!!!

magso · 04/11/2010 13:13

I agree it is hard to get inexpensive stylish comfortable boys stuff - especially as they get older. Boys ranges often stop younger as others have said. Take wellies - inexpensive girls styles are stocked up to 4 or 5 but boys only to 12 or 1 ( Ds has to have wellies at school so I have searched around the lot- got him ladies in the end). What are taller junior boys who dont like pink/ heels/ flowers meant to do? I know you can get good quality wellies in plain styles but they are expensive. Similar with gloves. Some unisex pull up style trousers would be usefull.

jojosmaman · 04/11/2010 13:25

Zara is by far the best shop for boyswear, I know its not Tesco/ Primark prices but I tend to by all DS's (age 3) "key pieces" from there as the quality is good and he looks like a little dude (as opposed to an annoying little brat at the soft play).

I like in particular

The coats
The shoes.. the shoes are amazing. OH wishes they did some of his little boots in his size)
The jeans. Great fit, great quality.

harassedinherpants · 04/11/2010 13:32

My "boys" are 19 and 21 now, and you can imagine how dire boys clothes were then!!

It was navy, navy or navy. Apart from the poo coloured jumpers xmil used to knit Grin!

ForMashGetSmash · 04/11/2010 13:35

I remember my nephew wh is 22 now, having a little clown romper suit when he was about 2...and also a sailor suit!

Tabliope · 04/11/2010 13:48

La Redoute online shop is good for boys and girls clothes - £7 for a fleece etc, plain colours, good quality

melikalikimaka · 04/11/2010 14:06

The trouble is, I like to feel the quality [or crud] and see it up close before I buy it. I'm not a keen on-line buyer or catalogues either. Confused

I am complaining about high street shops in particular. They don't care about our boys!!!Sad

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 04/11/2010 14:45

I also despise the fact that every shop dedicated only a third of the space to boys that they do to girls.

blackeyedsusan · 04/11/2010 21:25

formashgetsmash

would like something between tshirt/jeans casual and formal wedding type wear. trousers not jeans, a plain shirt, choice of colours, sort of sunday best thing rather than messing around in the garden. he is 2 and has long outgrown the baby stuff which I found had more choice, or perhaps I just preferred the styles so it felt like more choice?

asda had some great turquoise check shirts last summer, quite cheap too, so i bought several sizes cos ds is a red head and needs long sleeves in summer(PAIN) and there are not many options. (also had other reasons for stocking up on clothes, once they are bought the money can't be spent on something else!)

earwicga · 05/11/2010 20:57

melikalikimaka - New Look have nice black wool duffel coats. I looked everywhere this year to find something other than black/navy puffer jackets.

nappyaddict · 11/11/2010 21:42

Those of you that don't like jeans do you dislike all denim things like dungarees too or just jeans?

Also what do you think of colours like burgandy, mustard, marroon? Are they too dark and drab?
