here For anyone who is fed up of the lack of affordable boys clothes. Sorry to post it here but there were a few people in AIBU yesterday who wanted a campaign against this.

OP posts:

The clothes in Tesco for boys or bloody awful. Went to Matalan, and again loads of clothes for girls, little for boys, but I did find a couple of gorgeous check shirts, one purple check and the other red and blue check, and got jeans to match. Really nice!

I want to see more purple, turquoise, bright green and royal blue clothes and less brown, murky green and navy clothes!

And the less said about flipping slogans the better. I do have a couple of slogan T-shirts but they were appropriate for DS.

Really disappointed with Boot's new range, though they do have some gorgeous red check pyjamas, and a gorgeous red dressing gown, which will be on DS's Christmas list (he is 2.10).

This a old thread

earwicga · 03/11/2010 17:52

'I am 29 weeks pregnant with a boy, and my local tescos has 3 full aisles of baby/toddler girls clothes, and less than one for baby/toddler boys!'

Actually, you have almost 4 aisles for babt/toddler clothes. It is you that is deciding that your son's clothes are limited to just the one shelf.

It's different later on once the huge mountain of socialisation is realised by kids.

CardyMow · 03/11/2010 17:54

I'm highly unlikely to dress a baby boy in flowery pink or purple skirts/dresses. His older brothers would be mortified on his behalf!

bumblingbovine · 03/11/2010 18:06

I went to look for a winter coat for Ds in Next and Gap a acouple of weeks ago. I wanted a padded warm coat. There were exactly 3 different types for boys in Red, Navy, Black and Grey. There were at least 6 different designs for the girls in a varety of colours, let alone all the other types of coats for Girls.

When I look for anything there always seems to be more choice for girls. I wanted some wellington socks in Millets the other day and they only had pink. I would have bought them but Ds was adamant he didn't want them.

Even in socks, underwear, hats and scarves there is ususally more stuff for girls which means they sell out of boys things quicker. If they are going to have less choice, at least they could have more of what they do have for the boys but they never seem to.

I spent two weeks in Italy recently and they really do have morechoice for boys, The clothes were just nicer. I bought several tops and pairs of trousers for Ds while I was out there. The coats were really nice but I didn't have enough space to carry one back

ForMashGetSmash · 03/11/2010 18:06

Who said they would Loudlass?

bumblingbovine · 03/11/2010 18:08

witchcat.

You are describibng pretty much what they had in the Italian shops. It wasn't cheap though!

earwicga · 03/11/2010 18:21

Loudlass -

'flowery pink or purple skirts/dresses.'

Ah, so that is what the 3 aisles of 'girl's clothes is full of. Shops round your way must be very different to the ones here.

stillfrazzled · 03/11/2010 18:44

FMGS you're on the right lines - I adore Scandiwegian clothes, but my budget doesn't!

I have a pair of grey Baby Gap cords that are a lovely cut and DS looks fab in. Never found them again.

Vintage prints ace, vintage patterns ace. Frugi has nice stuff, but again £££.

purplepidjin · 03/11/2010 19:13

FWIW, I've set up a little business making proper fashionable clothes for kids with special needs - elastic or popper waists, smooth seams, room for a nappy etc. I've found some gorgeous corduroy colours, and I'm charging £10 for plain or £15 for decorative trousers. As I make everything to order, I make the pattern to fit the child IYSWIM. Message me if this'd be any use :)

bearcrumble · 03/11/2010 19:21

Go to Polarn O Pyret (most house of fraser stores) - honestly - loads of lovely, bright, reasonably priced stuff for boys.

Firawla · 03/11/2010 19:48

working9 - well i manage to dress my two in non vile clothing and they get compliments for looking nice, yet i don't have to spend every minute of my day scouring so difficultly for clothes so i would not say it is that hard.

although obviously people's tastes are different but its not like there is only one shop in existance, there are so many shops and the whole internet to buy from so not sure how people can not manage to find anything

there are vile girls clothes around too so i dont really think it is that unequal

ForMashGetSmash · 03/11/2010 19:50

StillFrazzled...I'm working on making cheaper clothes JUST as stylish.

Kewcumber · 03/11/2010 19:51

HUrrah hurrah - like minded people.

onceamai · 03/11/2010 20:01

Enjoy deciding while you can and be grateful for two aisles or even one. They will soon be teenagers and you will have no say whatsoever, at all. And if you have an 11 yo dd who is particularly well developed then welcome to New Look, River Island and "slapper land" in general because even if Johnnie B appeals, at 30+ for a top its ridiculous. Notwithstanding the most unpleasant shopping experience of my entire life last christmas queueing for and existing for more than an hour in Abercrombie and Fitch!! Neary 50 and past it or what Grin

purplepidjin · 03/11/2010 22:35

FMGS, I am willing to do a pair of trousers for a tenner. But I'm specialising in decent affordable SN clothes. One pair of trousers takes nearly a metre of fabric and most decent stuff is £4 or so per metre. But then, I'm only trying to make a little bit of pocket money and help out some mums, not run a serious business...

Oh, and I've only been doing it for just over a week lol

ForMashGetSmash · 03/11/2010 22:45

Do you sell on Folksy or anywhere purplepidgin? I don't actually do any sewing...I wish I could...have tried but don't have the skill, plus sewing machines scare me!

purplepidjin · 04/11/2010 01:48

I've been going about 10 days! Am waiting for payment for my first commission, and 2 more enquiries :) I'm on facebook as MimaPants, and there's pics of my first efforts here
s746.photobucket.com/albums/xx102/purplepidjin/MimaPants/

It's really just that I've identified a niche. There are no decent SN specific clothes, and the ones there are are ugly and made out of horrible material!

I make about £6 on a pair of trousers that takes 3 hours to make including pattern cutting. I've got no qualifications in it and just draw stuff on greaseproof. It seems to work (the proof will be when I get feedback on the first 'professional' pair ) :)

buttonmoon78 · 04/11/2010 06:33

Sainsbury's and John Lewis.

That's all.

ForMashGetSmash · 04/11/2010 08:33

purplepidgin that link wont work..copied and pasted it but no luck!

I think you should put them on Etsy or folksy...lots of people buy there...and you wll get more business! 6 pounds isn't much profit is it? You must be good at it if you're making your own patterns!

purplepidjin · 04/11/2010 08:40

Whoops, try again. i think there's a random space crept in there...

s746.photobucket.com/albums/xx102/purplepidjin/MimaPants/

I don't know about "good", we shall have to see Hmm

ForMashGetSmash · 04/11/2010 09:27

Ooh it's not happening...link is bust and I can't find yu on blinking FB either!

tjacksonpfc · 04/11/2010 09:49

witchcat have a look in Bhs they have got waistcoats, suits and shirts and ties for boys ranging for 2yrs up and good prices. We dough ds a suit today for xmas as he's obssessed with shirts and ties at the moment. HTH Smile

dreamingofsun · 04/11/2010 09:56

worst time is when they are 10-14 years. too small for adult stuff and very little/no choice in children's department which is really aimed at younger children. M&S had tiny department and most of clothes were far too babyish. next doesn't do any clothes for 12 year olds in shops. supermarkets no better.

if a shop targetted this group with decent clothes they could make a fortune as they'd have so little competition.

purplepidjin · 04/11/2010 10:06
