to want a diamond?

10 year wedding anniversary coming up.

DH and I have never been into giving each other expensive presents, plus I earn more than him, plus all our money is in a joint account anyway.

And I am a sensible, grown up, non materialistic person.

BUT...but but but I do want a diamond!! Just a small one.

DH is nonplussed and slightly shocked that I really want one. He is planning to give me a book as an anniversary present, I think.

He has no idea how shallow I really am...!

Should I buy it myself??

I had the same when I got engaged. DH was shocked that I wanted a diamond - he had been planning to buy a £15 ring off a market stall - as we are both quite non-materialistic, non-consumey and not into expensive things. But a diamond is lovely. I still get pleasure from mine four years on - you enjoy it all the more if you don't have a lot of other posh stuff.

Don't buy it yourself if you can possibly twist his arm - it's much more romantic if it's from him, even though all the money is joint anyway so it makes no actual difference.

You can buy "antique" (ie second hand) ones much cheaper, and then the provenance is less of a worry too.

Oh, no, please buy it yourself! It is lovely to be able to choose what you like and feel it's a present to yourself. Otherwise you might end up feeling guilty you got him to buy it. I bought myself a little diamond and ruby ring when I got my first (and only!) job, and though I know the money would have come in useful elsewhere I love feeling that it's something I chose completely on my own and love. It's a really nice feeling.

(To answer the original question, though, of course YANBU to want one. It's a sparkly bit of rock, not plutonium!)

Ahhh..thanks again all!

Stuckinthemiddle - that's the whole point though! I don't buy the "every woman deserves a diamond" thing either. I think basic human rights are probably about as much as most people deserve. But I do want one. !!

Are antique diamonds less ethically dubious? Surely unpleasant practices around diamond mining have been going on quite a while? Wouldn't it be better to get one from somewhere that declares their sources? I have never thought about this before, it never having crossed my mind to get all hung up on a diamond desire before..

clam - how fab! maud - how

Surely an iPhone is just as expensive as a little diamond!?! And don't buy it yourself, it's not the same...

Megatron · 29/07/2010 14:23

You should have one. Tell him it's the law.

LetThereBeRock · 29/07/2010 14:26

But I don't want anything from Tiffanys Maighdlin.

I'd sooner have something from HMV thankyou.

draftywindows · 29/07/2010 14:28

If I wanted a diamond I would just buy myself one to be honest.

I also don't buy the "all girls deserve diamonds" crap.

BaggedandTagged · 29/07/2010 14:29

Actually, the diamond is a better investment than the iphone- they are effectively non-depreciating marketable assets whereas an iphone will be worth about a tenner once there have been a few more versions, assuming you can find a buyer.

draftywindows · 29/07/2010 14:33

I have a lovely antique diamond ring that I saved for out of my own wage packet. I look at it often and it reminds me that I have qualificaton, a brain and the ability to get what I want (within reason!)

I am a happily married woman of many years, however I recognise that men come and go whereas I am the one constant in my life. There is a certain joy that comes from buying your own jewellery.

The 10 year anniversary is tin:

Tin earrings anyone? A lovely little tin pendant perhaps?

Rather have a diamond myself!

HalfTermHero · 29/07/2010 15:49

Agree that you totally must have a diamond. I can't get enough of them! Choose something that you can afford and that you will love forever.
