to get annoyed at people who let their DC stand in supermarket trollies?

I just think that it is disgusting when you see people letting their DC put filthy feet and shoes (which could have walked in poo) inside the trollies where I am going to be putting my FOOD instead of sitting them in the seat or letting them actually use their legs and WALK.

Farty I agree children like that exist but believe me I have TRIED to get my child to behave in the supermarket. On one memorable occasion we both ended up sitting on the floor bawling our eyes out (I was pregnant and very hormonal) god knows what the OP or Poppin would have made of that. In the end I decided this wasn't a battle that was important enough for me to fight. I pack the food around him southeastra while he has a pack of (pre-packed and therefore priced) grapes to munch thru.

OTTMummA · 28/07/2010 18:14

YANBU, there is a warning label on the trolly for safety reasons, hence i do not allow my son to stand in the trolly, he sits in the seat, and i take something to occupy him.
I don't care what other parents do regards to their childs saftey so long as they are aware of the risks, and that it doesn't affect me.
One thing i can't abide is people taking a buggy on an escalator with baby inside, that chills my bones for some reason.
But some think nothing of it do they.

minxofmancunia · 28/07/2010 18:15

YABU

Chill the f**k out

Or alternatively get a life!!

My dd (nearly 4) does this ocassionally as it's less mither than a tantrum

She also sometimes has a snack from the supermarket out of it's packaging (such as a grape) BEFORE I'VE GOT TO THE TILL

And worst offence, when i was pregnant I USED THE PARENT AND CHILD SPACES as they were nearer to the front door

OP you would really really hate slack rubbish mother of unruly child me

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 28/07/2010 18:15

You don't see it in Waitrose.

ReasonableDoubt · 28/07/2010 18:16

What are the risks of a child standing in a supermarket trolley?

Christ, the things people worry about.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/07/2010 18:18

OP if the child in questions feet are visably encrusted in poo then YANBU, otherwise, you are.

Schulte · 28/07/2010 18:21

I can't believe the number of people on here who feel they have to stick to the random rules some health and safety officer has come up with. It's making my day actually

ModreB · 28/07/2010 18:22

No, its just that I was in ASDA today and saw a child, about 6 yo, standing in the trolly, and his shoes were filthy and full of mud. I just thought that 1. It's disgusting, and 2. It's disrespectful to people using the trolly afterwards.

Butterbur · 28/07/2010 18:26

YANBU. It's s filthy habit. You wouldn't put your kids' outdoor shoes on the dining table, so why should they go in the trolley? Not to mention their dirty little bums.

It makes my blood boil.

ReasonableDoubt · 28/07/2010 18:27

Do you eat off a shopping trolley, though?

God, there are some right Victor Meldrews on MN!

My ds is well behaved most of the time but let him loose in a shop and he runs for the door, doesn't look back and doesn't stop!
so Poppin no he won't walk nicely next to the trolley, sorry.

Doodleydoo · 28/07/2010 18:30

I couldn't go into Sainsbury's for ages after I saw someone stick their mucky fingers into the salad bar and then sneeze on it and this was an adult.

However strangely standing in the trolley doesn't bother me and frequently let dd do it if I have to go to the supermarket, although now she would prefer to sit in the seat AND will insist on doing up the belt herself . So no one would have any beef with me today!

YunoYurbubson · 28/07/2010 18:33

YANBU, but I'm afraid I let my dc in the trolley. If we need groceries and that is the only way we are going to survive the hellish dash up and down the aisles, then so be it. I do feel guilty about it, if that helps?

ReasonableDoubt · 28/07/2010 18:34

My five yr old doesnt arse around, though, he just sits or sometimes kneels fairly quietly, enjoying the ride. Not always, but occasionally, as a treat. The fact that it offends some people makes me laugh! I want to do it more often, now, just to wind up the easily offended types .

yanbu imo
but as I got flamed once for starting a thread on this subject......good luck

tethersend · 28/07/2010 18:38

I think it's disgusting that trolleys lovingly dredged from canals are treated in such a terrible way.

ReasonableDoubt · 28/07/2010 18:39

Quite easily!

Rollergirl1 · 28/07/2010 18:49

I sometimes place my 4yr and 2yr old sitting in the trolley if I cannot find a double seated-trolley (you can search high and low for one at my local Tesco) and I don't have that much to get that warrants me spending 10 mins looking for one.

My 4yr old could walk alongside but that would invariably create it's own hassles, for other customers and not just me.

Anyone that likens a shopping trolley to a dining table needs to have a word with themselves, quite frankly.

Worry about something more worthwhile.

Riven: The general scenario when I would do this is if I have popped to the supermarket on the way somewhere or back from somewhere so we have been in the car. I don't have much to get but can't use a basket as have both children with me and 2yr old can't walk the length of the supermarket. Can't find aforementioned 2 seater so just place them in the trolley. The shopping goes around them.

traceybath · 28/07/2010 18:55

You see I read the heading and thought you were talking about a safety issue which I totally agree with.

In fact most supermarkets have notices saying children shouldn't stand in trolleys because they can easily tip over.

And am sure as someone else said there was a fairly recent thread where someone had seen a child do this onto a floor and really hurt their head.
