A neighbour down the road seems to have many cats, which seem to love coming in my garden.

i really dont want to clean up after someone elses cat, as i know they carry diseases in their poop. i really find it gross and dont like it, i also have two kids, so i am forever checking the garden before they play.

wwyd?

I vaguely remember someone saying that if you get some tiger poo from your local zoo, it keeps the cats away.....

Colliecross · 27/07/2010 13:25

Water gun?

NewbeeMummy · 27/07/2010 13:26

I'm afriad cats are cats and next to nothing will stop them coming into your garden.

If you live near a zoo, one thing that does work a treat is to get some lions wee, and sprinkle it around your garden. The cats will then stear well clear.

Obviously getting a large dog is another option, but they're worse than cats for poop.

mistressploppy · 27/07/2010 13:26

Here we are - I knew I didn't dream it!

GooseyLoosey · 27/07/2010 13:27

We have a pump action water pistol by the front door. Its not really a deterrent, but it relieves some of the stress.

I once lived near a farm where they hung rats from a fence as a deterrent to other rats. I have wistfully pondered whether this might work with cats...

Tiredmumno1 · 27/07/2010 13:27

Collie i tried that, the buggers are to quick

tiger poo eh lol, never heard of that haha

I'd heard the tiger poo thing as well.

The other thing is to get a cat of your own??

stepmumtoone · 27/07/2010 13:28

orange and potato peel cats hate cirus, but dont know why patato works. whys this in AIBU though?

laweaselmys · 27/07/2010 13:31

Cats won't poo where they can't bury it. So get rid of gravel, and cover open earth with thick planting or big stones.

Had to do this a month ago, no more cat poo and garden is very pretty now too!

Tiredmumno1 · 27/07/2010 13:31

You get more replies here for some reason so thats why.

i was thinking of having a word with the neighbours aswell, as they are always roaming day and night.

i shall try the peel thing, i wonder if it really works

This is the bane of my life - Im know it's just what cats do, but it does make me annoyed because if someones dog came in every day and shat everywhere, you'd be banging on their door asking them to stop it!

Grrrrrr. And double grrrr and the fact there's nothing you can do about it!!!

stepmumtoone · 27/07/2010 13:39

orange peel definatly does my nan had it in her window box for years, think youd need a fairly large amount she had two oranges in a window box change every month or so. fair enough and good luck!

turnitup · 27/07/2010 13:44

We have one of these and it really works.

The only problem is it's a bit noisy, so DH rigged it up to our water sprinkler which was much better.

Stops all the cats overnight!

MrsC2010 · 27/07/2010 13:45

Our neighbour's cat is doing our head in. If one of our dogs lept into her garden every day, shat everywhere then dug up all her plants I can only imagine the outrage. But it is acceptable because it is a cat.

GooseyLoosey · 27/07/2010 14:12

The other alternative is to throw the poo over the wall into the offending owner's garden. Clearly this does not facilitate good neighbour relations but helps with the feelings of frustration.

Dinkytinky · 27/07/2010 14:15

Plant a catnip plant- cats looooove it so they won't poop anywhere near it!

LuluF · 27/07/2010 14:17

Cats definitely don't like oranges. They pull a very funny face when they're near it!!

Tiredmumno1 · 27/07/2010 14:24

Thanks for all your responses, i shall try your ideas one by one, much appreciated.

ta for letting me vent.

Jeyes fluid is a smell they really don't like. Dilute some and spray it round the outside of your garden.

Mowgli1970 · 27/07/2010 19:37

Jeyes fluid is poisonous to cats and could kill them.

minipie · 27/07/2010 19:46

Citronella essential oil will help. you don't need much as it's strong. As an added bonus it will help keep insects away too.

illgetyoubutler · 27/07/2010 19:56

orange peel only works when the peel is fresh and stinky, so you would have to keep renewing the peel for it to work effectivly as deterrant.
The best thing to do, if it's possible, is to lay some sharp decerative stones (gravel?, or even larger flat decorative stones on the area, as the sharper stones hurt their paws to walk and dig on, and the larger stones of course will prevent them from being able to dig and scratch around as they will be too heavy for the cat to move. This is what we resorted to, and since we done the poo patch area, no cats have pooed there.

menaceandmayhem · 27/07/2010 20:06

I used to put large sprigs of holly all over the planted areas, so they couldn't get to the areas to poo. Had to keep it there for quite a while, but soon cats realise the garden is a no go area and don't both coming back.

katkit · 27/07/2010 20:36

lemon peel chopped up and shop bought cat repellent worked for me. also, run outside screaming at them- after a few goes they won't come back for months.
