to be angry at my neighbour mowing the lawn at 7.30am?

It wasn't the noise so much that bothered me as the fact that it set my hayfever off big style because the windows were open.
Not a good start to the day. Sniff.

Raining here now - maybe he/she wanted to beat the rain. To be honest, does an extra hour make that much difference?

ChippingIn · 27/07/2010 09:26

If it was the noise I would say YANBU - that's still fairly early for people without children or people who have late sleeping children. However, if she knows you'd be awake then it's NU.

If you go to work and will be out all day, it would be worth asking her to wait until you've gone out if she doesn't mind.... but if you are home all day and are already awake - what difference does the time make?

DandyDan · 27/07/2010 09:45

Isn't 7.30am the earliest legal time you can do this? So they are within their rights, although if they did it every three days through the summer, it might get annoying. If the neighbour works long hours or there's a threat of rain, I think it's fine to do this.

cumbria81 · 27/07/2010 09:55

I think YABU. It's not that early.

ZZZenAgain · 27/07/2010 09:57

no harm in showing a bit of consideration though, is there? Why mow the lawn at 7.30? Not hard to imagine you might be disturbing people.

ZZZenAgain · 27/07/2010 09:58

I'm up 6.00, sometimes 5.30 if I can't sleep so it wouldn't bother me personally but I wouldn't start mowing my lawn that early

TheFallenMadonna · 27/07/2010 10:00

Because if you work, if you don't do it before you leave, you have to do it when you get back, and then someone will start a thread about their neighbour mowing the lawn when they are trying to get their children to sleep

Chil1234 · 27/07/2010 10:05

I've always thought 10am is the earliest time to start any noisy job - just to be neighbourly. BTW if they mow the lawn at 7.30pm, even on a sunny day, it'll be full of dew and get wrapped round the cutters....

ZZZenAgain · 27/07/2010 10:07

round here I hear them out mowing at the weekend before 9. Don't pick up on anyone mowing the lawn at 7.30 on a weekday though.

NorbertDentressangle · 27/07/2010 10:10

Blimey, and to think I was grumbling about our neighbour and his cement mixer at 9am on Saturday and Sunday!

I would be hacked off if they mowed their lawns at 7.30am

gorionine · 27/07/2010 10:12

I was thinking on the same line as TheFallen Madonna!

BuzzingNoise · 27/07/2010 10:25

He's not at work today - his car is still there. I'm a teacher so it's the summer holidays for me. I just think it's a bit thoughtless. I wouldn't consider doing something like that so early...until now.

I don't think 7.30am, particularly on a weekday, is early. Most of our neighbours are leaving for work around then or at least up and about.

It's only reasonable to keep the noise down between 11pm and 7am though. These are the hours when you're supposed to avoid things like using car horns etc...

ChippingIn · 28/07/2010 11:53

crazycatlady - it might not be early for you (and it's not early for us either!!) but not everyone's the same. There are several MN'ers who put their children to bed much later and who all get up much later - it's not my choice, but it is theirs. I think a little consideration goes a long way and the 'I'm up, everyone should be up' attitude is pretty selfish.

There's no need to be mowing a lawn at 7.30 - there are plenty of quieter things to do, even in the garden if you want to be outside getting jobs done.

mistletoekisses · 28/07/2010 11:57

YABU - I havent. But if I heard a neighbour doing it, wouldn't bother me one iota.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 12:02

YABU - 7:30 on a weekday is not that early.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/07/2010 12:04

My dd came into me on Monday morning at 8.30 looking like a zombie, she had been woken up by the council cutting the grass in the graveyard/common next door.

'What. Is. That. Awful. Noise'

I just laughed, bless teenagers.

I would be pissed off at some selfish git mowing their lawn at that time. No doubt there will be masses of posts syaing '7.30 isn't early, you should try getting up at 4am every morning like I do' but in my book half 7 is too bloody early to mow the lawn.

Retaliate by putting Thin Lizzy or whatev at 80 decibels tomorrow morning.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/07/2010 12:05

Mind you I am out of the house by that time most mornings anyway.

So would prefer them to mow the lawn when I am at work and not ruin my Sunday afternoons with the noise.

BACKTRACK - yabu

swanandduck · 28/07/2010 12:07

Well in fairness, you having hay fever is not his fault. However, from a noise point of view, mowing the lawn at 7.30 is totally selfish. To the people on here who don't think it's that early, seriously you will really annoy your neighbours if you do this.

ChippingIn · 28/07/2010 12:13

TheCoalitionNeedsYou - it's your weekday morning, it might not be everyone elses - not everyone works M-F, retired people aren't always up and about at that time etc - it's just inconsiderate!

We are regular M-F, not retired and 7.30 isn't early at our house - this doesn't stop us accepting that for some people it is too early for us to be outside making an unavoidable noise.

Anyway, Buzzingnoise you said it wasn't the noise bothering you but the 'hayfever' aspect - from that pov what difference does it make what time he mows the lawn? (Genuine Q) Please come back and answer this

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 12:18

So are you meant to do a poll of your neighbours to see what hours they keep? 7:30 is not early for most people so it's a reasonable time to mow the lawn. If a neighbour says 'please can you not do that I work shifts' or whatever then you can take a view as to whether or not it is a reasonable request.

swanandduck · 28/07/2010 12:26

Actually it is early for an awful lot of people; Retired people, people who work shifts, people who are on holidays from work; people who are in bed sick and need to sleep on a bit.
Of course you don't need to do a poll. It is just common sense.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 12:37

Most people are at work mon-fri from about 9 and get up between 6 and 7 and aren't sick at the moment.

It is a perfectly reasonable working assumption.

swanandduck · 28/07/2010 12:38

A lot of people are, not most people. Would it kill you to wait a bit.

Mollydoggerson · 28/07/2010 12:39

YABU - 7.30 is not early really. I think it's ok.
