to be angry at my neighbour mowing the lawn at 7.30am?

It wasn't the noise so much that bothered me as the fact that it set my hayfever off big style because the windows were open.
Not a good start to the day. Sniff.

Coalition 7:30 is not early for most people so it's a reasonable time to mow the lawn - what about the other people - do they not deserve consideration?

coraltoes · 28/07/2010 12:42

Whilst legally it may be fine, i feel it shows a degree of disrespect to disregard the fact it might disturb your neighbours! We have a lawn which gets mowed on the weekend (or a day off if you dont work m=f) during the day. We do any loud DIY in sociable hours, never before 10am on a weekend, not cos we think everyone is asleep but isn't it nice to have a weekend morning of peace sometimes?! We all live so close together it is important to remember what we do impacts on those around us, and to be a little considerate in our actions.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 12:42

No - most people get up between 6 and 7 on a weekday.

It could be the only time they can mow the lawn. If they are out all day and get back/are busy til after dark for instance.

Neighbours make noise. Get over it and either negotiate or move. This is hardly anti-social behaviour.

swanandduck · 28/07/2010 12:43

I can't believe the number of selfish people on this thread. 7.30 am is too early to make noise like that. The fact that you're up at that time is not justification.

ChippingIn · 28/07/2010 12:54

Coalition - it is light till 9.30pm. Who is busy from 9am till 9pm, 7 days a week?

If one of your neighbours started drilling and banging at 10pm at night this would be OK, because he/she and 'most' people are still awake?

Crazycatlady · 28/07/2010 12:55

To be honest, the bin men are out making such a racket at 6.30am and no-one complains about that, so I don't see how 7.30am can possibly be a problem.

A lawnmower is not a particularly intrusive noise, it's not like a pneumatic drill going off next to your pillow. If you're sick or luck enough to have a day off (which most of the neighbours won't), then 20 minutes listening to a lawnmower is not exactly a hardship.

Shiftworkers are used to having to find ways to sleep through daytime noise. Earplugs spring to mind.

I would think it very odd to be annoyed, or to complain, to a neighbour mowing their lawn at 7.30am.

swanandduck · 28/07/2010 12:59

I don't think it's a bit odd. I do think it's odd to be out mowing the lawn at 7.30, oblivious to the fact that you might have woken the neighbours up. Even if it's only for 20 minutes, once you're awake it's hard to get back to sleep.

AuntieMaggie · 28/07/2010 13:00

I thought the time was after 8am legally? Or are the builders round our way just lazy cos they stand around until 8am on the dot to start making a racket?

Crazycatlady · 28/07/2010 13:03

I'm not sure who there would be left to wake up at 7.30am though?

Most working people and those with families are up and out the door by then.

Those who are sick - well presumably they'll be in bed all day so any noise at any time would be irritating.

Non-working people - it's only one day of the week, and 7.30am is not unreasonably early. Just about all the retired people I know are up and walking to the corner shop for their newspaper by 7am.

Shiftworkers - see above.

ChippingIn · 28/07/2010 13:04

The bin men are there for a couple of minutes - not the length of time it takes to mow a lawm. Unless you want to pay more council tax, the bin men working early in the morning is unavoidable - mowing a lawn is not.

There are many reasons that some people will not be awake at 7.30 in the morning and yes, for some of those people being woken up is a hardship. It's not just 20 minutes out of their day, most of them will now be awake for the rest of the day - for no good reason.

So, people should sleep with earplugs in, just in case some inconsiderate git wants to mow their lawn at 7.30 in the morning??

I give up - I guess I am just going to have to accept that some people are astoundingly self absorbed and inconsiderate.

mablemurple · 28/07/2010 13:05

If they always mow the lawn at that time then YANBU, but as a one off, YABU. It may be that they have other things planned for the rest of the day, meaning that today, that was the only time they could do it.

LetThereBeRock · 28/07/2010 13:06

I think that's about an hour too early.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 13:06

Mowing the lawn is not the same as building work. Many people are buy 9-9 several days a week - lawns need mowing serveral times a week in peak growing season.

My neighbours had a barbecus on saturday - i asked them to shut up at 1:30am. I waited that long because they have just as much right to use their garden as I have. If it was every week it would be different. Once in a while is ok.

CatIsSleepy · 28/07/2010 13:07

i would rather a weekday morning than any time at the weekend tbh
yeah, YABU

LetThereBeRock · 28/07/2010 13:07

There are people who mow their lawns several times a week?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 13:08

ChippingIn - I presume you make no noise outside at ANY time just in case someone has gone for a lie down as they feel a bit peaky.

Crazycatlady · 28/07/2010 13:10

Where do you draw the line then?

Legally, noise levels are supposed to be kept down between 11pm and 7am.

You can't account for the few people for whom these hours don't match their lifestyle or you'd never be able to mow the lawn or do DIY or anything that produced a modicum of noise.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 13:11

In spring you might need to if you get a wet but bright period as it can be growing really fast. If you let it get to long then cut it you end up with a yellow lawn.

LetThereBeRock · 28/07/2010 13:15

I can't imagine having it cut more than once a week,if that. Where do people get the energy?

Ours has never turned yellow either.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 13:23

It's not often you'ld need to do it more than once a week.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 28/07/2010 13:23

There is probable a better section for gardening discussions though.

Angelcat666 · 28/07/2010 13:48

YANBU 7.30am is too early.

It's all very well saying it's once a week but that's just one neighbour. What if each neighbour thinks it's okay to do something noisy at 7.30 on different days of the week (not necessarily mowing the lawn). You could end up with being woken up at that time every day of the week.

Btw my mum and step father (retired) are never up at that time of the week unless they have to be.
