how old is your baby?

MrsGangly · 26/07/2010 12:54

Because their digestive systems aren't able to digest the proteins in cow's milk and because it doesn't have enough iron or nutrients. Formula, based on cow's milk, has to be processed to take it out to make it safe for babies to drink.

If your baby is over 6 months then a little here and there, like in tea or coffee is fine.

greatits · 26/07/2010 12:55

8 months

its not good for a drink nurtiounly, but in cooking is fine if no allergies.

tinned custard et wouldnt be on my list for every day foods, but once it while is ok (but not for dd4 who has severe4 milk allergy)

Colliecross · 26/07/2010 12:57

tea and coffee for an 8 month baby?

foxytocin · 26/07/2010 13:00

at 8 months she can have cow's milk as a weaning food. eg, in porridge or cereals. it is not a substitute for a milk feed (formula or breast)

custard, semolina and rice pudding are fine again in small amounts. if you are not normally going to eat these things as a family then there is not need to introduce them to your baby. babies don't need special weaning foods. and you don't need the work or another thing to think about. they will do well foods the family is eating anyway with a few exceptions (nuts, honey being 2) and maybe a mashed a bit with a fork.

Sometimes there is an advantage to having a mum on the other side of the world and a MIL an hour and a half away.

otchayaniye · 26/07/2010 13:02

"tea and coffee for an 8 month baby?"

I'm joking. My baby prefers Coke.

foxytocin · 26/07/2010 13:05

but which kind of coke?

greatits · 26/07/2010 13:07

everything is home cooked annabel karmel recipes when starting out but now pretty much our food mashed up a bit.

thanks girls

Why would cow's milk be harmful, unless your child had an allergy, or it was replacing breastfeeds?

Babies don't need different food. They don't even need it mashed.

Craven manufacturers and children's food doyennes feed on many a new mother's pusillanimity.

Colliecross · 26/07/2010 13:14

Pusi -what?

MrsGangly · 26/07/2010 13:16

Surely Irn Bru is better for babies - all those lovely colourings?

greatits · 26/07/2010 13:18

the cows milk thing is bantered around by HV and any mother of same aged baby as mine I come across.

The advice is there for our own good I assume?

OP posts:
greatits · 26/07/2010 13:20

I'm not Scottish....tis well known the English are allergic to irn bru

OP posts:
otchayaniye · 26/07/2010 13:20

what cow's milk thing?

otchayaniye · 26/07/2010 13:30

All they mean is you shouldn't replace breastfeeds with cows milk.

But as a foodstuff it is fine.

Turniphead1 · 26/07/2010 13:32

I am lost. Are the OP's friends/HVs confusing the advice - that cow's milk should not become a baby's "main" drink before 1 year? (Prior to which it should be BM or formula) - and changing the whole thing to NO cow's milk before 1 year? I have never heard the latter from anyone.

How odd. In the "olden" days I think babies were given ordinary cows milk in bottles quite early on - and that is what has now changed (for the reason described below).

Turniphead1 · 26/07/2010 13:35

So, OP was it your mother who was saying it is OK to give your baby things containing cow's milk? In which case, she is right (well within reason - one may wish to avoid mars bars etc for the 8 month old .

Tarlia · 26/07/2010 13:45

Depends which country you are in... Often in Europe (minus UK) babies switch to cows milk from 9 months.

Following UK advice, cows milk should not become a substitute for milk feeds until 1 year, but from 6 months is fine in food. Ie cheese sauce, porridge, rissoto (cream) or yogurts etc

firsttimemum77 · 26/07/2010 13:51

''If your baby is over 6 months then a little here and there, like in tea or coffee is fine.''

Tea and Coffee....for a baby over 6 months?
I haven't read the rest of this post - because I spluttered my drink over the screen when I read that...

grumpypants · 26/07/2010 13:54

Mine were all quite fashionably skinny and preferred it black, so no cows milk concerns for me.

lolapoppins · 26/07/2010 14:15

I think the poster just meant that the quanities like you would splash in tea or coffee would be fine.
