To be feel a little bit annoyed when they ask me if I want milk with my Americano?

Um, obviously not, hence why I've specified an "Americano". I know whose fault it is - people asking for one and then asking for "a bit of milk" as well

YABU.
That'll be me then; what's wrong with having milk in your americano?

Hassled · 22/07/2010 19:55

I always ask for an Americano with a bit of milk. Then they spoil it by putting in hot milk. Pah.

Is there a dictionary definition of an Americano, then? Presumably it's an American bastardisation of something else, so does it matter re the milk thing?

Morloth · 22/07/2010 19:56

Its a Long Black anyway, I always get mine with cream on the side, not bloody milk, cream.

PaintingTheFence · 22/07/2010 19:56

YANBU.

And I don't know much Italian but I do wish they would call a latte a lat-teh and not a lar-tay.

OrmRenewed · 22/07/2010 19:57

Well stop being a ponce and ask for black coffee then

said · 22/07/2010 19:58

It's an espresso with hot water added. So, no, no milk. Aaaargh. I'm going to start asking for a cappucino with no milk. What's the point of products having names if they are so casually disregarded?

painting, i agree, however thats much less irritating than "expresso"!!!

DemonChild · 22/07/2010 19:59

But how else do you get a white coffee in a coffee shop? Like what do you ask for?

Morloth · 22/07/2010 19:59

Long Black + Milk = Long White.

Americanos can come black or white. You need to specifiy.
I always piss them off by saying 'black Americano with COLD milk on the side'. Otherwise they put loads of frothy hot milk in it and it is no longer an Americano in my eyes

said · 22/07/2010 20:00

Obviously, I wouldn't ask for a 'capuccino' because no-one would know what that was. But, a cappuccino...

I've no interest in knowing how to get a white coffee. Presumably you say "Can I have a white coffee please?"

I have milk in my Americano.

It's what I like.

I like my cappuccinos "dry" which is a shot of espresso, a leetle milk and lots of froth.

Love all the phaffy coffee now. I once ordered a decaf grande rasberry frappiccino, excellent.

ReasonableDoubt · 22/07/2010 20:04

No, no, no - if you ask for 'a white coffee' you get some sort of latte-ish monstrosity! I want strong black coffee (an Americano, basically) with a splash of cold milk that I must be allowed to administer myself. It is crucial

said · 22/07/2010 20:04

I'm struggling to find the word "milk" anywhere in this description

ChunkyPickle · 22/07/2010 20:05

PaintingTheFence - I once asked for a latte at a cafe when in Sardinia.. imagine my surprise when I was presented with a glass of warm milk (I had wondered why they looked at me as though I was mad!)

OgreRebel · 22/07/2010 20:06

But it doesn't say long white on the board. It says americano. That's why people ask for it. And they're not saying 'do you want a white americano', they're saying do you want milk with your americano, thereby not sullying the purity of your shit drink, merely asking if you wish to add something to it to suit your shit palate.

bibbitybobbityhat · 22/07/2010 20:07

I wish I could get a decent strong very hot white coffee such as you'd get in Italy or Spain (cafe con leche in Spain) anywhere, just anywhere in this godforsaken country. But I cannot .

Morloth · 22/07/2010 20:08

I know bibbity why is the coffee always tepid? WHY WHY WHY?

said · 22/07/2010 20:09

Well, I propose new Coffee Shop Rules whereby "they" shoudl assume that when a cusmtomer is asking for an Americano it = a strong black coffe NO milk. The customer must then request milk. The offer of milk by the proprietor must not impede my request for an Americano. If I wanted milk, I would have asked for milk. If never used to be like this, it's a recent phenomenon.

I learnt the hard way after only noticing my white coffee 7 floors up.
