to give a weeks notice?

i started a job last year. i did not get on with my immediate supervisor who is bigoted and racist. she ensured i was kept on extended probation.

in the meantime i have been successful in the pursuit of my dream job. i have kept my senior manager appraised of my attempts to secure my new job but she was the one who agreed to keep me on extended probation.

now this is the dilemma. because they have kept me on probation according to my contract i only have to give one weeks notice. this would seriously land them in the shite. i do not have in writing yet my letter of appointment for the new job. when i do, i would like to leave to ensure i get some time at home with my kids over the summer. this would mean not giving masses of notice. though i could quite easily and legitimately give one week because they kept me dangling around on probation despite being there 8 motnhs....

aibu to just to leave with one weeks notice and think tough tits?

depends. What's the dream job

TimothyTigerTuppennyTail · 16/07/2010 22:15

YANBU. At all.

Enjoy the break.

CarGirl · 16/07/2010 22:15

There are lots of people needing work, I think give the weeks notice unless they offer you lots more to work an extra week or so!

Vallhala · 16/07/2010 22:18

You've mentioned what the dream job is in other posts and are no doubt so proud (and rightly so) and aware of the sacrifices you have and will make. Enjoy your time with your DC, you owe them far more than you owe your abominable current employers.

Good luck, I couldn't do the Job for all the tea in China, but I admire those who can so much.

MoonUnitAlpha · 16/07/2010 22:18

They'd give you a week's notice without a second thought!

YANBU. If it's a week in your contract, then give a week.

Horntail · 16/07/2010 22:18

YANBU, you have been kept dangling with the prospect of redundancy at 1 weeks notice.....

go for it I say

compo · 16/07/2010 22:19

Yanbu

there's absolutely nothing wrong with going by the book and giving a weeks notice when that's all that you're required to give

good luck

alicet · 16/07/2010 22:19

It doesn't depend at all. They kept you on extended probation, they have to suck up the short notice.

I would give a weeks notice and move on.

Different if they had been good to work for and made an effort which from the limited info in the OP sounds like they didn't. So I wouldn't be having a dilemma at all!

bumpybecky · 16/07/2010 22:20

yanbu

SloanyPony · 16/07/2010 22:20

YANBU

They can't have it both ways.

pluperfect · 16/07/2010 22:21

Hey, congratulations! I followed your thread about the bigots, and am pleased you will have a chance to stick it to them. Just don't let them drop you first!

As for whether you are being unreasonable, they were the ones who kept you on extended probation - meaning they have not covered themselves; on the contrary, they kept you in an uncertain state, and no doubt there were benefits you could not enjoy while on probation (pension contribs, holiday bookings, etc.)?

See what you can do about notice, as it will leave you feeling like the person you are, but don't go out of your way for Them.

Very happy for you!

i was wondering because i approached my senior manager today to tell her it was now in the bag and i was simply waiting for the letter of appointment. she said the more notice i could give the better because they will need to recruit.

i really may only be able to give a week. i darent give notice until i get the letter in my hand, by which time it may be into august. i want a few weeks off, so it may work out that i only end up officially giving a week. but i gave her the heads up that i was leaving a while ago.

nancydrewrocks · 16/07/2010 22:26

YANBU at all.

The company cannot have it both ways - don't give it a second thought.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 22:27

surprisingly my senior manager actually asked me if this i was actually going if i got an appointment date for the new job. ummm. let me think.

stay where i am. lowest of the low. 6k a year

or move to new job which i love as i do it as a volunteer already...have career prospects and a decent full time wage of 25k....now let me think for a minute...

OP posts:
tinkletinklelittlestar · 16/07/2010 22:34

Do not give any notice until you have the letter in your hand and have accepted the job.

Think about it. Offers can be withdrawn and you might have messed your current employer around in the meantime - not a great bargaining position to get into if they have already extended your probationary period!

Why are you telling the senior manager about it anyway? I would not tell anyone anything until things are certain.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 22:35

if i can i will give more notice, but as it stands i may well be a week.

im just gonna dig my contract out to double triple check but im sure its right - i tend to remember these things especially as i was already plotting my exit.

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 22:37

tinkle - i had to book time off at short notice for tests, and the new position required medical info and a reference, and i work for my own doctor. so i had to tell the manager though no one else knows.

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 22:39

my manager has been really ok about it all - she has given me refs, and was genuinely pleased for me when i told her today that i had passed medical and fitness. thats why i dont feel great about leaving her in the lurch.

OP posts:
pluperfect · 16/07/2010 22:45

So the manager is fine, but it's the supervisor who is a bigot. That's better, but you still said that the senior manager was the one who agreed to keep you on extended probation. Please, do be careful that you don't have warmer feelings toward her than she deserves, simply because she is "nicer" than your bigoted supervisor and the other nutters you described working with. I have seen "nice" managers turn nasty, or side with the twats, just because they were not actually nice by conviction; it simply suited them to play nice while things were easy.

Sorry to be so negative, but just want you to play it safe until you are safe.

RJRabbit · 16/07/2010 22:48

As someone who worked in HR for a long time, if I were your manager, I'd have already contacted agencies/done whatever the company would normally do to start the recruitment process. If they haven't done this, then they're very silly indeed.
It's not your problem. Really. Think of it this way: keeping you hanging for 8 months is just cruel, but to do this, they've knowingly taken the risk that you would leave with minimal notice. They've weighed that up and decided it's worth the gamble.

tethersend · 16/07/2010 22:55

I would give a week and take the week as holiday. They sound awful.

By keeping you on probation, they will reap what they sowed.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 22:55

ive only given the info ive had to give. im doing nothing until i have the letter in my hand, and yes the senior manager has been ok with me, but did agree to extend my probation, but i feel sure she was going on information from my supervisor who hates me. i stood up to her racism and i felt at the time i would pay for it. the supervisor is very mouthy, loud and opinionated and the girls i work with just go along with everything she says no matter how unreasonable or outrageous. i didnt. i thought she would make me pay for it and she did.

ive just tried to be up front with my senior manager because ive had to be. i had to have a reference so i had to tell her. she in turn asked me not to mention it to anyone else as her bosses may think ill of her, so ive not. i feel id like to be fair to her because in this instance i feel she has been fair to me. if you forget the whole probation thing that is....

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 16/07/2010 23:01

but

it seems the consensus is that a week wouldnt be unreasonable. good. cos i feel bad about it and that makes me feel better!

OP posts:
pluperfect · 16/07/2010 23:04

It's quite sad she had to ask you to keep it quiet that she gave you a reference.

ThatVikRinA22 · 17/07/2010 00:00

i think i am whats known as a black sheep!

im sure it will be fine when it all comes out. hate all this cloak and dagger stuff at the best of times.
