to suggest my daughter dresses as Vicky Pollard for a fancy dress party?

Hi,
My 11 yeAr old daughter is leaving primary school this year. They're having a leavers party on Monday and have to dress up as a superstar.

Her best friend and quite a few others are going as "Lady Gaga", I don't even know who that is.

I bought my daughter a lovely white dress to go as Marilyn Monroe and a wig, The wig was horrible, sent it back and have abandoned the idea. Then I got hold of a lovely pink tracksuit top and thought Vicky Pollard.

She's just put it all on, the bling, make-up, few Vicky Pollard badges, hair combed up into a high pony tail. Looks great. But she's worried that the boys will say she looks like the real Vicky Pollard..she doesn't, but know what she means.

Should I abandon the idea? Is Vicky Pollard a superstar anyway? Just wondered what others thought. Should I stick with Marilyn Monroe (daughter not keen) or go with Vicky Pollard (daughter keen but with reservations)? Has anyone any other ideas?

what kid wants to be associated with vicky pollard - for a 16 yo it might be funny but i think an 11 yr old will only get teased to death

coolma · 10/07/2010 19:33

I think it's funny!

YunoYurbubson · 10/07/2010 19:35

Vicky Pollard is not a superstar.

antoinettechigur · 10/07/2010 19:36

Does your daughter have any ideas?

Don't think many 11 year old will know who Marilyn Monroe is, and Vicki Pollard is.. weird.

Doigthebountyeater · 10/07/2010 19:39

Don't do it. For them a superstar will equal glam. If you send her looking foolish, they'll make fun of her. Not nice when you're young. I hate to say it but you'd be better off glamming her up and sending her in as one of the tarts - sorry pop stars- that they all know about. You can bet that that's what all the other girls will be doing and, when you're 11, it's all about fitting in.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2010 19:41

Agree with Doig. In fact even better - let her discuss with her friends what they are going as and choose something to fit in with them.

I was the kid with the mum with the "creative" ideas and I always got picked on and I hated it. Sorry.

PeedOffWithNits · 10/07/2010 19:45

yep, stick with cheryl cole or kylie or posh spice - someone everyone knows, and just involves glamming her up a bit really

if she wants to be a bit different get her and a girlfriend to go as Ant and Dec

SpiritualKnot · 10/07/2010 19:48

She wants to go as Vicky Pollard but I agree she will probably get teased. The other kids seem to know who Marilyn Monroe is but dd has dark blonde hair and says she doesn't want a wig or have it sprayed blonde.

It's a very self concious age, she actually looks like a really pretty version of a female Vicky Pollard. But like you say, Vicky Pollard is not a superstar.

I don't know, it seems that about 75% of the girls are going as this Lady Gaga, dd doesn't have any ideas. I must be older than the other mums, I've suggested Madonna..dd doesn't know who that is. Has to be someone who has an immediately recognisable type of clothes or make up...a few are going as Amy Winehouse.

Some of the boys are going as "Twist and Pulse" from Britains got talent. I don't think of them as superstars either!

Thinking of blonde stars (seeing as you started with Marylin

Reece Witherspoon
Jennifer Aniston
Drew Barrymore
Hillary Duff
Miley Cyrus

bertie I feel your pain

SpiritualKnot · 10/07/2010 19:51

Xposted there.

Yes maybe Cheryl Cole or Kylie would work. Will check out some photos of them. Any more famous names?

Thanks

or the girl in Twilight! Vampire stuff so you can avoid the premature sexiness problem with some stars.

oh the choices..

proudnsad · 10/07/2010 19:52

Vicky pollard is a really really bad idea. 90% won't know who the character is. Your daughter will get teased. And ummmm what planet do you live on to not know who GaGa is?! Twist and Pulse are superstars to 11 year olds...the idea needs to come from your dd or her peers.

sharbie · 10/07/2010 20:02

hermoine from hp ?

lolabanola · 10/07/2010 20:10

This is a hard one because it's hard to be recognisable as a 'Cheryl Cole' look alike or someone like that so think a pop star might be too hard a look to pull off.

Marilyn is a good one because she had her own style so everyone would know who she was supposed to be, I personally like the vicky pollard idea but may be kids will be shouting 'yeah but no but' at her all day. What about Cleopatra? Or she could go very smartly dressed and be Victoria Beckham ( again though may be hard to look like her), Britney Spears? I think she needs to be a character though as opposed to a pop star so that people will know who she is. God this is a hard one!

NarkyPuffin · 10/07/2010 20:12

Superstar = real person to me. I'd imagine that a lot of the boys will be wearing football shirts. I'd just try to find her something she looks pretty in that she's comfortable wearing. Cheryl Cole would work if you can style her hair- try a google image search.

southeastastra · 10/07/2010 20:13

fgs of course it's funny, go for it

lolabanola · 10/07/2010 20:13

Hannah Montana is a good one

southeastastra · 10/07/2010 20:13

anything hannah montanna offends me

SpiritualKnot · 10/07/2010 20:21

Thanks for the replies. She nearly went for the Hermoine idea, then said she didn't want a school unifrom on. She's insisting on the Vicky Pollard thing now. They all know who Vicky Pollard is as there's an advert with the character at the moment on TV.

Looks like it'll be Vicky Pollard, at least she'll be in comfy clothes. Sure most of the wigs and high shoes the girls will be wearing will be discarded after 5 mins anyway.

She's just mentioned that someone is going as a Tellytubby, so maybe not as glamorous a do as I had originally thought!

OP posts:
lolabanola · 10/07/2010 20:21

well southeast, don't you get dressing up as her then!

fifitot · 10/07/2010 20:24

I pity the child with the creative mum! My DH's mum sent him and his sisters to a fancy dress as Ann Bolyen and the axe man - when they were 7 and 8 respectively! Everyone else was a cat or something!

sharbie · 10/07/2010 20:28

feel sorry for the tellytubby

Bellabellabella · 10/07/2010 23:58

I would be more worried by the fact that 11 year olds are expected to do this!

PantsMacabre · 11/07/2010 00:10

Cheryl Cole's 'baggy trousers with slits in and a military top' outfit should be easy to replicate...

porcamiseria · 11/07/2010 09:34

hmm. its a bit young for her no ? I am teensy bit uncomfortable with the whole "lets pretend we are chavs" thing

love fititots MIL tho!!!!
