to think DH wants to spend money for the sake of it!

Ok, so here's the situation... We bought a travel system when DD was born which has served us well for the past 14 months. We are looking to buy a lighter weight and easily folded stroller for when we go on holidays, and for general use. We have had a 'discussion' about it as we have 2 completely different views.

First some background: I am a SAHM after 11 years in a well paid job, so our income has been halved since I gave up work. DD was extremely prem (born at 27 weeks) so is very PFB if I'm honest. I tend to walk to most places or use the bus, so it needs to last through lots of walking and be easily folded.

I think we should go for an Oh Baby Atlas Sport which we could get for around £70 and does what we need. He thinks we should go for a Baby Jogger City Mini which is about £170 and also does what we want. (I think he's fallen in love with the nifty folding mechanism)

I say we don't need to spend the extra money, while he says the extra money would be well spent on a) quality so it'll last longer and b) ease of folding.

So who IBU? Will they last as long as each other? Does he have a point about quality?

Oh, forgot to say that, while income has been halved, we could afford either of them without too much trouble.

Get the nice one. Sometimes its good to spend more and get more. You should get good use from it by the sounds of it.

Galena · 10/07/2010 19:41

Thanks Sloany. Anyone else?

Bobbalina · 10/07/2010 19:45

Is there something you would prefer to do with the £100 saved?

Galena · 10/07/2010 19:48

Nothing specific, Bobbalina - I just hate the thought of spending money we don't need to spend.

Get a maclaren, pad with a sheepskin if necessary, they have a 'lifetime' guarantee now i believe, i had one repaired it was damaged in a fire and it can back like new

notremotelyintofootie · 10/07/2010 19:56

you could also think about re-sale value for when you are finished with it...

Have you tried both in a shop? Which is more comfy for you and little one? Comfort persuaded me to go for my silvercross combo which was over £500... Ouch, but its great for walking and walking and walking, crap on buses though!

Galena · 10/07/2010 19:59

Don't like the Maclaren calf-rest - so they aren't in the picture.

Cheap buggies are often cheaply made and won't last esp if you walk a lot. Agree Maclaren are the best by far.

Booper13 · 10/07/2010 20:09

We got a Baby Jogger City Mini as our second stroller as the original one was a bit of a pain to get in and out of car and fold up and down. It has been brilliant and we have used it for DS2 from birth as it folds down almost flat for sleeps. The folding mechanism is really good too. I really would recommend it, (although I don't know what the Atlas Sport is like). I'm pretty sure we paid less that £170 - there was a good deal at Argos at the time.
Also, if you get the one DH wants, and anything goes wrong, you can be the blamer as opposed to the blamee

Galena · 10/07/2010 21:11

Sounds like DH may get his way! Now to find it at a non-ridiculous price - unfortunately Argos no longer sell them.

you need to speak to Misdee or curtian twitcher, they are both pramaholics iirc

BertieBotts · 10/07/2010 21:16

I had an Atlas sport and it was fine but no good if you needed to run fast with it. (The wheels rattled) So not great for catching buses on that point! I left that one with XP when we split and now have this buggy for buses etc which is practically identical in spec for near enough half the price (and the wheels don't rattle), so if you decide to go for the basic buggy I'd go for this one instead. The only main difference is the recline mechanism.

(Also just found that the M&P Nipi which I believe is very slightly better than the Pipi - the hood has a window for example so you can see whether they are sleeping - is half price this weekend at £35, only on the website though. Again this is very similar to the OBaby Atlas Sport.)

The seat on the BJCM looks slightly bigger and more comfortable to me. I see John Lewis stock them, so may be a good place to go to try one out - if you take your DD with you they don't usually mind you sitting them in the display models for a test drive. Try reclining and un-reclining with her in the seat as well.

What about a second hand BJCM?

Galena · 10/07/2010 21:19

[tries to will them mentally onto the thread]

I'll go and put a shout out on the pushchair section for you

oneofthosedays · 10/07/2010 21:26

I'm biased as we have the BJCM and prefer this above our maclaren. If you do lots of walking it is excellent, like pushing fresh air. I think your DH is right in this instance

MistyB · 10/07/2010 21:32

I am a pramaholic!! And yes - the Baby jogger City Mini is fantastic!! I'm a big fan!!

It's really nippy, you don't need a rain cover or a sun shade as the shade is really big, it's really easy to push with one hand, spins on a sixpence, fits a buggy board which hooks up nicely when not in use (the o-baby one), drops to near flat really easily, fold like none other!! I have a lodger pram cosy and I would happily have used just this with the BJCM from birth.

If you have any more DC's, being able to push one handed while holding hands / pulling a scooter / bike is a huge benefit, and if not, you can hold your coffee!!

I wish I was on commission but I'm not!! There are a few good looking ones on ebay, where I got mine and they do seem to wear well!!

5inthebed · 10/07/2010 21:35

Gt the BJCM, without a shadow of a doubt. You'll end up having to buy another buggy if you buy the Obaby one.

mummy2theboys · 10/07/2010 21:56

I am genuinely interested that you even discussed this with your DH. Personally I would have gone and bought the one I wanted and not even discussed it with him. This was a top tip my fab mum gave me when me and DH having a few GRRRRs between us re baby/toddler equipment. I did the research, I bought the item. I bought a McLaren about £110 and has done both of mine, still looks good after 6 yrs and plan to pass onto a friend/family member as a spare.

FindingMyMojo · 10/07/2010 22:06

get a Maclaren Techo.
Our has been everywhere, up mountains, on many flights, beaches, stones, torrential rain - it's invincible. DD still sleeps comfortably in it at 2.7 months. Folds, is light, easy to manage. Sorry - I don't sell them but it's one product where everything you hear about them is true.
We got ours 2nd hand too!

Rhian82 · 10/07/2010 22:25

We bought a Mamu One from Argos for £30 when we moved DS into a stroller. Lasted a year before the wheels died, but I did a lot of walking with him. I don't really see the point on splashing out on an expensive one to be honest.

merryberry · 10/07/2010 22:33

oh my word, the baby jogger city mini.
my 6th and final pram and it is the utter business. wonderful.

vicbar · 10/07/2010 22:50

Hi my friend is a pramaholic and she's just bought a BJCM and it is the ONLY pram in the 6 years I know her she hasnt complained about. She got hers on ebay for about £100 and it's like brand new.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/07/2010 22:57

Bcjm is the best pushchair we've had. Much better than maclaren if you use it a lot, especially on uneven surfaceces - rides much better and wheels don'r wear down.

Galena · 11/07/2010 09:23

Ok, DH is happy - we've just bought a BJCM on ebay (Brand new with raincover included) and it should arrive on Tuesday or thereabouts.

Thanks for making me see sense!
