dd4 last lot of RASTy tests this year indictaed she wasnt allergic to milk and eggs. milk challenge was done in paril (failed). egg was done today.

usually they dab on the chin near the lips. but dd4 is v young and was eating her lunch. dd4 has never had egg at all, so today was really worrying for me. so we went with dabbing on the cheek/jawline.

big welt appeared within 10mins.

bad pic

so hopefully in august we will be able to get skin prick testing done as well, to give us a better indication of whats going on.

but for now, we will carry on as we have been doing.

Sorry it didn't go well.

bridewolf · 01/07/2010 22:34

we had failed food challenges as well.

sorry. its a big disappointment.

misdee · 01/07/2010 22:35

it would've been so nice to knock one allergen off the list.

but its clearly not to be. for now anyway.

do feel like crying a bit for her, but she doesnt know what she is missing out on.

misdee, sorry if I've missed the story about this but just to let you know that DD1 was allergic to eggs when she was wee too. We had to go to the hosp for her MMR etc

she will be 7 on Wed and it hasn't caused any major problems, she doesn't like eggs which is fair enough but she can eat things with eggs in them, pasta, cakes, quiche etc

I'll keep everything crossed that this is the same for your DD4

misdee · 01/07/2010 22:40

thanks dizzy. atm its a no-no for eating anything with egg in, but there is an 80% chance she will outgrow the egg and milk allergies.

the nut alergy ones, not to good. just 20% chance.

dizzydixies · 01/07/2010 22:41

who likes Fruit & nut anyway?! just gets in the way of the chocolate

misdee · 01/07/2010 22:41

has to be dairy free chocolate ;)

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 01/07/2010 22:44

Poor you. Must have been a huge disappointment.

alibobins · 02/07/2010 15:57

That really is rubbish for you
Ds1 is 5 and we have never even got as far as a food challenge what is it that test with? actual raw/cooked egg or is it food based.

Whelk · 02/07/2010 16:49

How rubbish for you and dd4 misdee. Its such a disappointment isn't it. But she is still very young and I understand most outgro allergies between 3 and 5 so there is hope.
Still crappy tho!

misdee · 02/07/2010 21:29

yes she is still very young.

at least the food challenges are over for a year now. The nurse said if the skin prick tests get done, and next year they redue, then will consider bringing her back year on year for a challenge.

and now we def know, she is def allergic to egg and cannot have it. where as she had never had egg before, or been near it, it was an 'unknown' iyswim.

Sorry to hear it didn't go well misdee.

We have egg challenge with dd2 on Tuesday.

Have to bring scrambled egg in with us.

She has never even eaten egg before so I'm hoping she'll try some.

Do you have any tips? we've never done a challenge before.

Also do you know if you have to stay off anti histamines for the two days before like with the skin pricks?

Only 4 wks until dc3 is due- at least if the egg challenge provokes labour inducing results I'll be in the right place!

CokeFan · 03/07/2010 11:11

Sorry it didn't work out for you, misdee.

We're going for an egg challenge on Wednesday with dd (22 months). She's never had the RAST blood tests but didn't react to the skin prick test this time (still has a reaction to CMP).

We've got to be at the hospital for 8.30 in the morning (eep!) with 2 hard boiled eggs and something to mix powdered egg in if she won't eat the eggs.

girlsyearapart good luck with yours - we haven't done this before, but our instructions say no antihistamine containing medicine for at least 1 week before the test.

misdee · 03/07/2010 11:14

have to be anti histimine free for 5 days.

we tok in fresh eggs.

they cooked on (microwaved scrabled egg) and dabbed a small amount on her cheek.

if she had passed that they would've progressed to dabbing some on the lips.

and so on.

its a long day, as they wait 30mins bvetween each stage before progressing.

and if you have a reaction they give anti histimines and you have to wait around for 2 hours after

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 04/07/2010 16:32

wow well we haven't had any instructions except the ones about what kind of egg to bring.

she had anti histamine before bed last night and I'll try to keep her off them from now on but that'll only be 3 days..

I'll be a bit pissed off if they cancel the challenge because of her not staying off anti h for a week because we've had no instruction/information whatsover..

Good luck cokefan

Whelk · 05/07/2010 21:37

Misdee - did your dd4 have a baked egg challenge first (e.g. in cake)? My dd1 hasn't had a lightly cooked challenge but thankfully 'passed' the baked egg one aged 22 months.

For those going for theirs,it can be a long day so take favourite toys, books, snacks etc.

girlsyearapart · 06/07/2010 18:00

well we failed the egg challenge today

Whelk · 06/07/2010 19:29

Girlsyearapart- I'm so sorry to hear that . Its so disappointing even when you try not to get any hopes up.

girlsyearapart · 07/07/2010 07:33

yes the first 1/4 then 1/2 teaspoons went well, she liked it and I was having vivid cake baking fantasies..

Then just before they gave her the 3rd lot her bottom lip swelled, face went bright red, coughing started then she went all floppy.

They gave piriton which perked her up a bit but then her eye swelled and went bloodshot.

By the time we got home she was covered in hives and leaning on any available surface and scratching. Felt so bad for her.

Even though we knew from rast and skin pricks that she was allergic I was still totally amazed that under teaspoon of egg could cause a reaction like it.

CokeFan · 07/07/2010 21:22

Oh no, girlsyearapart - that sounds like a terrible reaction! I'm sorry you had to go through that.

We had our egg challenge today and DD failed too.

We got there on time (with our hard boiled eggs), they spent about an hour weighing, measuring, filling in forms etc. before they started giving her anything.

In the end we didn't need the eggs (not sure whether they'd use them anyway - one letter said to bring some, one said not to!).

They mixed powdered egg into some soya vanilla pudding (that dd normally loves). She ate the 1/4 teaspoon, had the 1/2 teaspoon with some fussing but completely refused any more. She started scratching and has come up in lots of spots. They said she probably knew there was something wrong with the pudding - maybe could feel it tingling in her mouth or something. They did monitor her very carefully - checking blood pressure, heart rate, temperature etc. regularly.

They gave her some piriton and we had to wait another 2 hours for any further reaction before they let us leave. She's been ok since (went to the zoo this afternoon).

Apparently, to complete the challenge she would have had to eat the entire 250ml of pudding/egg in increasing quantities at a time - leaving a 20 min gap between each amount - and the last part of the challenge would have been to have raw egg touched to her lip. We're some way off that.

At least we know where we are now. We've been told she can have cakes, biscuits and maybe pastry with egg in, but nothing more (no egg pasta or actual eggs).

I'm really glad it wasn't a CMP allergy test. A couple of weeks ago I had some milk and then kissed her on the forehead and she came up in a big red spot - no way she's drinking any!

misdee · 07/07/2010 21:24

whelk, no they just touched her with cooked egg. will asked about baked egg at her appointment in august.

sorry for the other LO's not to pass. am a bit surprised they had them eating eggs, that wuld scare me loads.
