dd4 last lot of RASTy tests this year indictaed she wasnt allergic to milk and eggs. milk challenge was done in paril (failed). egg was done today.

usually they dab on the chin near the lips. but dd4 is v young and was eating her lunch. dd4 has never had egg at all, so today was really worrying for me. so we went with dabbing on the cheek/jawline.

big welt appeared within 10mins.

bad pic

so hopefully in august we will be able to get skin prick testing done as well, to give us a better indication of whats going on.

but for now, we will carry on as we have been doing.

If it's any consolation. DS failed three times and this year finally passed at age 10. Hang in there,,,,

misdee · 07/07/2010 21:29

nurse said they had a child recently pass at age 13. so there is hope...

I would recommend asking for the baked egg challenge as dd1 passing it has changed our lives as she can have birthday cakes, biscuits, Yorkshire puds.

Lightly cooked egg is considerably easier to avoid than all egg iyswim.

Which is good since dd2 is allergic to all dairy as well as egg - ho hum!

drosophila · 08/07/2010 13:11

My ds's consultant explained that while you may be able to eat baked egg, complete abstinence means you are will probably grow out of all egg allergy quicker.

girlsyearapart · 08/07/2010 19:33

So bloody scared of egg now she can wait until she's a bit older!

Thanks for all supportive comments- nice to know we weren't the only 'failures'

Whelk · 09/07/2010 21:52

Its such a muddle isn't it drosophila- we actually had completely the opposite advice from our consultant

drosophila · 10/07/2010 13:26

Was that recently Whelk?

The one thing our consultant does say a lot is that we know very little about allergies.

Schulte · 10/07/2010 21:09

Oh heck

Sorry to hear about failed food challenges. We'll have to do ours at home - they won't test DD2 in hospital apparently that's the rule in our area.

I've also had conflicting advice re. avoiding all egg / trying cooked egg... it's so difficult isn't it

girlsyearapart · 11/07/2010 08:02

will they give instructions to you schulte?

If we'd done the egg challenge at home I really don't know how things would've turned out. She was enjoying the egg so much and not showing any reaction until before the 3rd lot, I'm sure I'd have given her more if we'd been at home..

Schulte · 11/07/2010 09:36

Not really other than touching the egg to her skin first, and waiting after each tiny bit that she eats. That reminds me though... I have a feeling you're in the same hospital as us... Kingston? How come they did a food challenge for your DD there and are telling me no?

bridewolf · 11/07/2010 20:01

girlsyearapart, how long did they keep you in hosptial after the reaction.............coming home with hives, is not a good.

certainly the symptoms you describe dont sound mild to me, and would require a longer stay in hosptial for observation.

i take it her rast and skin prick tests indicated outgrowing? otherwise would be no point in giving egg challenge.

girlsyearapart · 11/07/2010 21:05

schulte yes we are also at Kingston. Very odd that they are telling you no and us yes.Her dairy results were much lower so they told us to start introducing that at home though. I may ask for a challenge for that too though.

bridewolf our appointment was at 130 and we left hospital at 4. They would have let us go nearer 330 though but we were too scared to leave until her eye went down a bit.

The hives came up once we got home not at the hospital. I would've been happy for her to be admitted overnight as I almost had to take her back in and although she slept all night none of the adults did for worrying!

Her results had dropped a little bit but her skin prick wheal size was still over the size that they said they wouldn't challenge at. Something like her wheal was 5 or 6mm and they said they would challenge at under 3mm but then changed their minds and sent a challenge appointment..

Schulte · 12/07/2010 19:59

How very odd. As I said DD's wheal was about 4mm. They must have concluded that it didn't look like she was going to have a bad reaction - but based on what???

bridewolf · 12/07/2010 21:59

oh, gosh, when we have had food challeges we have are in hosptial from 9-10 am until 5 or longer 7pm when he failed a egg challenge.

and wasnt put forward for a test until spt results very low.

i take it that they gave you advice to follow for later reactions when they sent you home!

girlsyearapart · 13/07/2010 15:09

All sounds like a disorganised system doesn't it?

I would push for a challenge schulte

CokeFan · 16/07/2010 15:26

I had a phone call from the consultant who did our skin prick tests the day after our egg challenge, who said she thought it might be a good idea if dd had a blood test before the challenge. Well, yes, it might have been a good idea - especially as it took most of the day for us, she failed and it must have cost the NHS a lot more to treat dd as an inpatient for the day than to give her a blood test.

The left hand does not know what right hand is doing - clearly!

However, we've now got our next appointment for skin prick tests (May 2011)

wedgeitt · 27/07/2010 18:44

My son is allergic to egg, he had a skin prick test at 10 months wwhich confirmed this and then another skin prick test at 16 months, still allergic and now he is 3 and a half hes about to have another skin prick test, keeping fingers crossed hes outgrown it but not holding my breath. a lot of people on here are saying their kids are having direct food challenges without having had a skinprick test first, that must be scary! i wont let Daniel be challenged directly unless he has had a negative result from a skin prick test.
