Anyone know a shower wash/gel suitable for child with eczema?

She is 3. Has eczema mainly on legs now and it is quite good at the moment.

I would like to wash her in the shower occasionally but would rather not use Epaderm as I think it would be awkward to use. too slippery and the bath is already all greasy so would prefer to keep it out of the shower.

I need something moisturising that won't irritate.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try Infaderm, Infacare or Halos n Horns. I have used all 3 on my DD. Her eczema is not particularly bad though.

You can get Doublebase emollient in a shower gel, You might need to get it on prescription.

Our nurse gave us some trial sizes and we use them after she goes swimming.

displayuntilbestbefore · 16/02/2010 16:27

Aqueous cream is a great cleanser in the bath or shower, just slippery but you'll get that with any emollient.
It's not expensive but you can ask for it on prescription if you don't already.

sb6699 · 16/02/2010 16:32

We use Dermol.

Your HV will have trial sizes of lots of stuff if you ask (so you can try before you buy!).

not sure if ok for 3yo but on my DD aged 9 with eczema I use Sanex kids shower gel which has a bit of a scent but seems very gentle.

izzybiz · 16/02/2010 16:34

I use Halos & Horns on Ds2 with his eczema, I get it where they keep the baby stuff at Tesco.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 16/02/2010 16:43

African black soap doesn't seem to irritate dd (halos and horns did) or these products all seem ok (only use them at most 2x a week though)

teamcullen · 16/02/2010 16:50

I only use Johnsons baby bath as a shower gel with DS and rest of family. It doesnt hurt his skin or irritate his eczcema then use his emolient cream after.

His is mainly on his legs as well.

jasperc163 · 16/02/2010 20:28

Using Eucerin Dry Skin Bath & Shower Therapy - 20% omega with naturaloils. Got it from Boots.

AJSH · 16/02/2010 20:33

Was told about Aveeno (Johnson and Johnson in chemists) products a few years ago . I swear by it. In fact I have used it as a facial moisturiser as well for the past year.

EmilyStrange · 16/02/2010 20:41

Can I just ask what you all use to ease the itching and pain when they have eczema as my dd is very unconfortable.

bran · 16/02/2010 20:52

Aveeno oil or unscented African black soap for DS.

Emily, for DS's itching I use either Aveeno oil/powder or oats in a flannel in the bath. I find Aveeno anti-itch and overnight creams very useful too. When it's really bad a dose of Calpol helps him sleep without scratching, but that's something that I don't want to have to do very regularly.

bran · 16/02/2010 20:54

It might also be worth trying one of the Burt's Bees products, there is a range of gentle baby bath stuff. I haven't tried it on DS but their shampoo works very well on him and doesn't irritate at all.

Mog4 · 16/02/2010 20:55

Had an eight year old with dreadful exczema tried every lotion and potion known to man. Found in the shower dove soap was very good. Can only base recommendations on a vocal child who told me whether something was itchy or painful and she had no reaction to this, unlike other prescribed washes. The whole process with a child suffering with skin conditions is trial and error.

hippacrocadillypig · 16/02/2010 21:05

I don't generally use any soap on DD1 who suffers from eczema - but if she is really dirty then I use a tiny bit of Greenpeople childrens body wash. And I also fill the foot of an old pair of tights with oats, tie them up and put that in the bath with her - this soothes and moisturises the skin and doesn't irritate.

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 21:20

DS1 had bad eczema until he was 2.5. It didn't improve for ages until ( a different GP ) recommended Dermol and said to put it on as many times a day as possible ( and use for washing ).

It was his opinion that for my DS the solution was not in specifically what emollient/aqueous product was used, but the regularity of the use. With heavy usage, it cleared within 3 months.

Eglu · 16/02/2010 21:33

DB uses the simple range on his DD

ClenchedBottom · 16/02/2010 21:37

I agree with Mog4 - finding products that won't irritate the skin is a real trial and error issue - my DS reacts badly to quite a few of the things recommended on here (especially Halos'n'horns!)- I don't think there is any other way, sorry. This also comes up every year with regard to suncream, exactly the same problem.

arcticwind · 16/02/2010 21:37

Thr Allergenics range is excellent - I use it on ds

suiledonne · 17/02/2010 08:06

Thanks everyone.

We use Epaderm in the bath and to moisturise. So far it has been the best thing for dd's skin. We have used Emuvate in the past which sorted out bad flare ups but haven't needed it for a long time.

What I am really looking for is a non-irritating product for occasional use in the shower.

I'll have a look at the Aveeno, Allergenics range and the Burt's Bees.

Halos and Horns not suitable - she reacted to the shampoo.

I do the same as hippacrocadillypig. I love the Greenpeople stuff. Oats in tights is fab too. dd calls it a 'squish' and loves to get all the 'milk' out to spread on her skin. Adds to the fun of bath time.

SofaQueen · 17/02/2010 08:14

DS1 is outgrowing eczema and DS2 has it. I have always used Weleda products on them with very good results. They have a cream liquid soap which I use on their hair and body. Fantastic product, and smells nice too.

BertieBotts · 17/02/2010 08:29

If you write to Weleda they will send you a free sample of their nappy change cream which has almost the same ingredients as their baby bath wash - in fact ring them anyway, they are really nice and might send you a free sample of the bath wash stuff.

grenadine · 17/02/2010 08:59

We use a forever living Aloe vera liquid soap. Easy for the children to dispense and seems very gentle on their skin. It can be used for hair as well.

Rhian82 · 17/02/2010 09:07

We get Aveeno on prescription for DS, it's really good.
