Milk intolerance symptoms??

mummymimi · 06/06/2009 20:45

I am just wondering if mums with experience of milk intolerance could tell me what the symptoms of cows milk intolerance are and whether there are different levels of intolerance?

OP posts:
simpson · 07/06/2009 20:55

lactose intolerance is more common but it is possible to be cows milk protein intolerant which is much rarer.

How much are they selling the milk for?

kalo12 · 07/06/2009 20:56

simpson i thought it was the other way round lactose intolerant quite rare in babies, but cows milk protein intolerance very common

mummymimi · 07/06/2009 21:02

The website doesn't show the cost.

This is all so confusing, I just hope the GP knows about it all, as I have read that GPs often miss milk/lactose intolerance and I have already been fobbed off with 'he'll grow out of it'.

A 425g tin (less that half the Cow & Gate) costs £14.06.

simpson · 07/06/2009 21:10

kalo - oops, you are right!!

mummymimi - TBH a lot of it will be trial and error unfortunately as to what your LO can tolerate.

Because DD was so severe she went straight onto neocate FF so check that one out too although I warn you it tastes vile so may take time getting Lo to drink it iyswim.

mummymimi · 07/06/2009 21:22

I have just discovered Neocate is £30 for 400g . Also the Neocate website has a test to see if symptons point towards intolerance/allergy, the result for my sons symptons was stong possibility of intolerance.

I have written what I want to say to the GP down.

my ds [third child] started getting symptoms once i introduced a bottle of formula after about 6 weeks ,they kept saying it was just colic as it starts at this time anyway but i knew something was wrong and kept going back, His symptoms were screaming and arching his back when feeding, kept pulling himself of the bottle /nipple and screaming in pain which would go on all day.and very windy which stank of rotten eggs!! plus bad skin
He would get constipated and cry when he wanted a poo. they put him on lactolose but didint really help.i persisted at drs and asked to be referred and was seen fairly quickly [apparently they have to see a referral within 6 weeks} . they did loads of tests..skin prick;rast[blood] test; and tried him on hypoallergenic prescribed milks all which he couldnt tolerate, they found he had milk, soya and egg intolerance!!great fun so i started him on goats milk formula[nanny] which id done with my first child and it helped enormously..the hospital cant prescribe it due to not recommending it as there havent been enough testing allowed to be done by new zealand manufacturers!! but its worked fo r many children and it has with us,,they even tested my son on goats milk which they said they werent supposed to do but wanted to see for themselves and guess what ..it showed up he wasnt allergic to that at all!! hes now [at 21mths] still on goats milk and doing fine as long as i dont slip up and give him too much dairy[cows] hes ok with egg but def allergic to soya which is a pain because its in so many things as an emulsifier¬¬ my son is now old enough to tell me his symptoms an dhe tells me itchy or sore tummy. he gets diarrhoea, eczema, and has terrible nights because of his tummy, some night crying because it hurts,,because hes had something he shouldnt have had, when he was younger he got very bad exzema all over his body which drove is all mad poor thing..but theyve virtually helped us eradicate it now.
go back to your drs and ask to be referred or ask to have another opinion. they cant refuse you !!good luck

mummymimi · 07/06/2009 21:48

All I have been told by my GP is that he is colicky (surely this should of passed by now, he is 7 months) and has silent reflux, I am not so sure as the meds have made no difference. When I go back tomorrow I am going to be more insistant and get start to the point.

OP posts:
mummymimi · 07/06/2009 21:49

I meant straight to the point. I really need to go to bed

OP posts:
simpson · 07/06/2009 21:59

Good luck tomorrow.

My DD's neocate is £38 a tin

Luckily we get it on prescription

But it was a battle to get it in the first place.

I do have a few tins here and am happy to send one if you want to try it...

mummymimi · 07/06/2009 22:05

Thanks

Do you mind me asking how old your DD was when the intolerance was diagnoised?

OP posts:
simpson · 07/06/2009 22:13

she was on SMA gold when first born and wouldn't feed/arch back, constipated etc...

I changed FF to cow & gate thinking it was just the type of formula and it did help initially TBH.

When she was 6mths I weaned her and straight away she was really bad.

Was on MN all the time thinking her diet bad etc to make her constipated etc.

Then at 8mths twigged it was yogurt making her really bad.

We were referred to hosp and had stool test at around 10mths and even then pead (total wanker, parden my language ) said there was nothing wrong with her. Put her on soya FF first but she was even worse on that.

He still says thee is nothing wrong with her despite the dramatic difference neocate has made. He reluctantly prescribed it after I got a free sample off someone on MN.

Probably because of the cost of it

mummymimi · 07/06/2009 22:25

My DS was on SMA Gold when he was newborn and he was would arch his back whlist feeding and was constipated, so I changed to Apitimal and the constipation improved but he was still back arching, then I changed to Cow and Gate 1 and the arching improved but he is still very windy and unsettled etc..

I have a feeling that I will end up buying special formula!!

cheesesarnie · 07/06/2009 22:32

with ds2 he had ruuny bum for months and months ,gp tested him for ecoli, samonela and lots of other things over and over again.until someone suggested it was a cows milk intolerance.we tried him on goats milk produce and soya produce and he got better.its only been in the last year that he can now have cowsx milkproduce again-its fantastic!but we had got used to his diet.

kalo12 · 07/06/2009 22:41

i bought neocate but ds would not touch it. you have to mix it bit by bit with your usual formula to get them used to it. why not try soya for two weeks to test before you go to gp.

my gp would not prescribe it saying it was only for extremely sick children

simpson · 07/06/2009 22:48

Yes you could try soya FF but I warn you DD was totally fine for a couple of weeks then reacted but I do think it was because I fed her too many soya yogurts on top of the FF she became intolerant too iyswim.

simpson · 07/06/2009 22:55

Kalo - what FF is your LO on?

[angry} at not geeting neocate, although not much point if your DS won't take it.

DD loves it, odd child, and took to it straight away, I think because she wasn't getting tummy ache.

Although the problem I have now is really she should be having 20 ozs a day to get enough nutrients/calcium etc and on a good day she will have 12

She just wants to eat now TBH.

Was prescribed calcium supplement with yes you guessed it lactose in I didn't check and she took it for a week

ilovemydogandmrobama · 07/06/2009 23:41

DS is on Neocate. He was very very ill in hospital for about a week. The dietician said he'll be on hypoallergenic formula indefinitely, so probably at least until he's 3 years old (he's 15 months now)

Mummymimi -- what's your DS weight gain like? One of the Paediatricians told me that slow weight gain can be a symptom of dairy allergy, or some intolerance. Could you ask for a referral to a Dietician? The way it works where we are, the Dietician at the Children's Hospital is the one who makes the decisions about formula. They fax the prescription to the GP and he issues it on repeat.

kalo12 · 08/06/2009 11:43

i'm still breastfeeding at 16 months. formula and bottles never worked. I give him rice milk in a cup but he still wants to breast feeding about 12 times day/night

i want to stop but have tried several routes, he won't have it!

He's only on the 0.4 centile, doctors have been useless.

i recommend ' digestive wellness for children' by elizabeth lipski and 'what can i feed my baby' by susannah olivier

green veg has more calcium than milk, but its the essential fats that are more of a problem. i give my ds flax seed oil which also repairs the gut from irritation of food alllergies and also helps body absorb nutrients from food.

simpson · 08/06/2009 15:35

That must be why DD is such a broccoli fiend, making up the nutrients etc

Will get some flax seed oil when next in town.

Luckily her weight has always been okish. But this is probably because she eats so much.

She easily eats triple what her 3yr old brother eats

Sunshinemummy · 08/06/2009 16:05

DD has an intolerance to cows milk protein and is on Nutramigen 1 for it.

She is not super sensitive to it but her reaction is quite extreme. Her symptoms don't manifest for a couple of hours and she can have about 2oz milk, some babies apparently show symptoms from just a drop on their lips. When she does start showing she is sick and keeps being sick every 20 mins or so, until every bit of bile is out of her stomach. She also goes quite limp and quiet - so much so that it was incredibly scary the first time it happened she was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

At first I couldn't get anyone to take me seriously when I said she had a problem. I kept getting told to try her on different formula, despite the fact that it made her really ill. Eventually I met another mum at nursery whose daughter has the same thing and she told me she'd had to really force them to take it seriously. I took DD to the GP and told him that I wanted her to be tested, which he agreed to.

That afternoon he called the Paediatrician and told her DD's symtoms and she advised it did sound like an intolerance and suggested she be given Nutramigen to try. She hasn't looked back since.

We've since seen the paed (and we're soon seeing the paed dietician) and because it's clear she is intolerant we've been advised to keep her off all dairy, eggs and seafood apart from white fish.

Sorry it's long and hope this helps.

mummymimi · 08/06/2009 16:36

I have been to the GP today and have been told to wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks. He isn't sick at all, but is very fussy and belches all the time and has alot of bottom wind and loose stools, and also his belly gurgles.

I just feel a little lost as to what to do

OP posts:
simpson · 08/06/2009 16:44

don't really understand the point of waiting any longer TBH.

Did doc refer you to pead in the meantime?

You could start a food diary too and write down everything ie what times she ate stuff, how many poos in a day etc.

If you still want a tin of neocate let me know...

Only problem is once she is on it you either have to beg pead/doc to prescribe it, or pay yourself.

Also if your DD is tested then she will need to have dairy in her diet too for it to work.

But the offer is there if you want it as I have quite a few tins, enough for my DD

mummymimi · 08/06/2009 16:56

OH! His weight gain is fine, on the average line. Although I haven't been to clinic for over a month.

OP posts:
mummymimi · 08/06/2009 17:00

He didn't do a referral, but was going to discuss it with another GP (ex paed). I did think about a food diary. I will think about the formula, I was hoping to give it to him with the help of the dr.
