Ezcema and Sun Lotion - Please can anyone help?

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 15:37

DD is prone to ezcema but I pretty much know what to avoid food wise and as long as I put lavender oil in the bath we are pretty much OK.

However, with the hot weather the Nursery have been covering her with sun lotion, very commendable of course but it is playing havoc with her skin. Very raised and dry patches. They are using a child lotion I know but I obviously need to send my own in.

Please can anyone recommend a good solution? Also, how do you get it off any night? I hold back from strong soaps etc as it makes her skin very dry and prone to outbreaks but water only just does not get it off.

She is btw.

Many thanks in advance.

Suncream also makes ds1's skin terrible. I have yet to find a solution, so will be watching with intrerest.
How much lavender oil do you put in the bath? I havent heard of that, I might try it, did it help to clear up ezcema? When ds's skin was bad once, I used oats tied up in a muslin to wash him with, this might get the cream off?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 23/04/2009 15:42

Oh also, we have tried various suncreams, most were awful on his skin, soltan for sensitive skin seems to be ok though...

Jacanne · 23/04/2009 15:51

We tried E45 suncream - it's a bit expensive and goes on really thickly but doesn't cause any reaction in either of my girls whereas many other suncreams do.

iwouldgoouttonight · 23/04/2009 15:52

DS's ezcema is also sometimes triggered by suncreams. We tried quite a few and Nivea for children is the one that suits him best (not saying that's a good one for everyone, just the one that seems to suit his skin). I was advised (on here I think!) to try Green People - you can get free samples from them to test on your DD's skin before buying a whole bottle. Just do a search for their website.

We only use water to wash DS and have to just make sure he gets a good scrub with a flannel to get as much off as we can.

Have just been to the doctors with DD and it seems she also has eczema so we'll be trying all the suncreams out with her too it seems!

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 19:43

Gerald - lavender oil is genius. Get pure oil and just add one drop or two if a deep bath. It can clear up DDs eczema in a few goes or keeps it at bay if I use it regularly. Give it a go, also helps to chill me out, the fumes are lovely! Will try the oaty muslin thanks!

Jac - E45 is so thick eh? DD looks like Casper the friendly ghost and then everything sticks to her!

Iwould - I have heard of Green People, I will try to get a sample otherwise it is so expensive, thanks for letting me know that.

Anyone tried Bergaderm?

We have tried various suncreams as well and the one in the blue bottle, which I'm pretty sure is Nivea, seems to not cause Ds to have a rash or his eczema to flare up.

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 20:01

Thanks Trixy, I think I remember last year that the blue nivea was OK. I know that my SDD who cannot have soya in sun lotion (or nuts!) finds it OK so I will try on little DD. That nut thread but a bit hairy the other night eh? I know you are not supposed to talk cross thread but FFS!

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 23/04/2009 20:44

Is there soya in some sun lotions BBF?

I was raging about that other thread BBF. I don't understand what that poster was trying to achieve. Just stirring up trouble I guess.

It is one thing to wind people up, but it's not funny when children's lives could be put at risk.

pecanpie · 23/04/2009 21:00

Thanks for posting this. DDs eczema appeared recently and I was wondering the same thing about suncream with the nice weather. Off to dig out some lavender oil too!

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 21:48

Trixy - yes, there is soya in lots! I sprayed abro solare (I know that spelling is soooo wrong), the clear one, she had such a bad reaction, her face swelled up etc just like a nut reaction, it was a nightmare. She can only use the blue nivea one.

I was so angry too, I felt like I was being told I was stupid and paranoid. I was wondering if it was a wind up but I think not, just irresponsible.

Pecan - lavender is underrated, it is not just for old ladies! It is a really good natural bath solution to keep eczema at bay.

So far we are thinking the Blue Nivea one then?

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 23/04/2009 21:55

We've been using the blue Nivea waterproof one on DD the last couple of days, and she hasn't had any adverse reaction, though need moisturiser more often I think.

We've also just started using Liz Earle Nourishing Botanical Body Cream as a moisturiser on her (face) and her eczema seems to be at bay, rather than flaring up as it usually does when we try some new cream.

We only wash her with Oilatum.

Trial and error...

strawberrycornetto · 23/04/2009 22:06

Hello BBF. Our allergist recommended two suntan lotions for DS, one is called sunsense and the other jurlique. Both are apparently available on the internet but I couldn't find them in our large boots when I looked. Haven't tried them yet, DS has been sick so not at nursery in the sun this week!

trixymalixy · 23/04/2009 22:07

It looks like the concensus is blue Nivea!!

Thanks for the info about soya in sun lotions and lavender for the bath.

This is what the Mumsnet allergy board is all about!

BananaFruitBat · 23/04/2009 22:10

We didn't have much luck with Nivea. DS's eczema got worse. The best one I found (and I only tried because someone else reccommended it to me) is Johnson's. And I usually hate their stuff!

BananaFruitBat · 23/04/2009 22:12

(recommended )

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 22:16

Annie - Trial and error is the only way sometimes, also they grow out of some intolerences so what affects them one month might be OK the next.

Hello Strawberry! Good to hear from you hun. Sorry to hear your ds is poorly, allergy related or a cold/bug? I had heard of sunsense, apparently you can get it on prescription?

Trixy - Yes, the allergy board is usually great like this, I am pleased some of us are like minded. xx

Banana - Johnsons? Hmmmm, trial and error! I will try some )

Hi BBF. Been very busy with work etc too. DS is apparently food allergy free but keeps getting stomach bugs as we try to introduce milk, so possibly not allergic but intolerant? Not sure . Am hoping we have a good summer and he has a prolonged period of being well, poor little thing. Hope your DDs are well.

Joe1977 · 23/04/2009 22:27

DS1 (3.5 yrs) seems to react to every sun cream I have used, we normally get about halfway down a tube before he starts going bumpy! My reject basket contains Johnsons, Nivea, Boots Soltan, Tesco own brand and Ambre Solaire. Have brought M&S baby for this year, have been using this weeks and no lumps and bumps so far, but it's probably just a matter of time.

marl · 23/04/2009 22:28

I have a child with extremely severe eczema which been the case for 7 years. It's now under control after seeing specialists at Gt ormond st etc. The eczema society magazine is a very useful source of info and support. I saw an advert in there a few years ago for Sunsense suncream. They do two: the purple one is for very sensitive skin but I can't get hold of that locally any more (lloyds used to order it for me). The orange one is a roll on stick, factor 50 and you should be able to order that easily through your chemist. Though I have tried in the past using a few other suncreams for sensitive skins they have always made him worse. I wouldn't use anything else now, and definitely not borrow anyone else's or let nursery put on their own. Hope that's of some help.

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 22:28

Bless him, intolerance is much better than allergy of course. Have you tried probiotics? I use it for stomach bugs, we use acidophilus.

When DD had reflux she kept getting recurrent tummy bugs, her immune system was shot. I was told to use a probiotic like acidophilus which can be put into food/milk and helps to rebuild the lower gut and build up tolerance to bugs etc.

You probably know all this? I am most likely wittering on and on!

DDs are well, the youngest was 2 today!! We are onto almost 4 whole months without any anti-biotics, i am sooooo jazzed. The flippin nursery tried to give her pasta today, she does not usually go on a Thursday but my Mum is poorly bless her and so DD went to nursery an extra day. It was spagetti carbonnara and DD just pushed it away and they suddenly realised she could not have it. The worst thing that could have happened is her eczema would have gotten worse but she just seemed to know that she could not have it. Not bad for 2! Sometimes I think we underestimate them, if a child does not want a food stuff instead of trying to introduce it during weaning again and again maybe we should listen, chances are they know their own bodies better than we do no matter how young they are.

Happy birthday to our DD!! Didn't know about probiotics, thanks for the tip, I will investigate

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2009 22:32

i've just ordered lavera neutral which is meant to be specially for atopic skin

green baby sell it

my friend recommends e45, but ds did not really get on with e45 cream so i am not sure

BlueBumedFly · 23/04/2009 22:33

Whilst I was posting 2 more really great posts came up - the last message was for Strawberry.

joe - what is M&S baby - is that Marks and Sparks own brand? Would be really interested to hear how it goes.

Marl - Sunsence def sounds really good, I am going to try to order some. Many thanks for taking the time to post, must appreciated.

Trixy - change of plan, perhaps we need to try some Sunsense, I am sure you can get it on prescription, I read is somewhere.

Joe1977 · 23/04/2009 22:34

Sorry, meant to add, we use Tesco own brand childrens sensitive skin body wash rather than water only if DS1 needs washing properly (e.g. because he is covered in sun cream/mud/chocolate).
