Hi
My DS is almost age one (wow how time flies!). He is intolerant to cow milk (but can take yoghurt, cheese etc. ok). I am BF (twice a day now) but thinking about stopping. i want a substitute for him to drink- i have been given soya formula for cooking by GP but not keen on using it other than on his cereal. Is oat milk or rice milk ok for a drink to give? I am hoping he may be ok with cow milk eventually as he can tolerate other dairy produce.

I think with my ds it also had something to do with the fat content of dairy that he just can't stomach as well as the lactos. He can eat low fat cheese but not full fat. He can drink semi-skimmed milk but throws up full fat. Although normal semi-skimmed milk does bring him out in hives, well rissen red bumps on his cheeks, but he's not sick.

Hi Clothaddict

My dd2 has severe milk and moderate egg allergies, discovered at five months old. I BF till 1 year old and was told by dietician that it was fine to give soya milk as drink from a year old as long as it was calcium and vitamin supplemented. She also advised me to put spoonful of dairy free margerine or oil into main meals to increase her fat intake. DD is now 3 and a half, and though small and skinny, she has gained weight consistently and is lively and healthy.
Houmous has been a staple part of her diet for its fat and protein content!
I found oat milk great for cooking - it makes a reasonable white sauce esp when flavoured with mustard or something like that. It's also good for making porridge with.

Sorry i don't know anything about the effects of soya milk on boys.

Really hope your lo improves and you find a way of coping with his needs - it becomes second nature eventually!
