does he have any emollient for the bath? would that help? or put some oats in a sock and run under the tap when running a warm but not hot bath

it is meant to be soothing
don't panic about school - if he is having a bad flare up he might be better off at home

FrannyandZooey · 15/03/2009 22:28

i don't think any medicine stops the itching totally does it
it is very upsetting - my baby has it and we feel so sorry when he is itching
have you got any cream that your son likes being applied? can he rub some on himself instead of scratching?

FrannyandZooey · 15/03/2009 22:29

the doctor sounds unhelpful is there another one you could see? have you seen a specialist at all?

sb6699 · 15/03/2009 22:35

Do you have any porridge oats. Put them in a sock and run the bath taps over it then put him in the bath.

Do you have all night pharmacy/supermarket. You can buy emolient over the counter as well as pirotin which should help.

Sudocreme can help in the short term if you have any in the cupboard.

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:38

Probably not what the doctors would recommend but when my eczema used to get really bad, heat or cool helped. I would either try a hot water bottle as the heat would soothe the itch or a very cool bath.

It didn't stop the problem but, in the short term, it took away the intensive itch.

sb6699 · 15/03/2009 22:38

If its so bad he's bleeding I would ask your gp to refer you to a dermatologist.

They are more aware of the products available and whats most effective.

My dd had it really severely at one point as a baby (weeping/bleeding open sores) and the nurses in the dermatology unit had her skin practically clear within a week!

marie1979 · 15/03/2009 22:39

school is not very understanding when he has time off for his eczema. yes have seen a dermatologist she told me not to give him medicine but ive had to and yeh hes got everyting creams suits mittens stuff for bath wash hair i dont know what else to do nothing is heping

Oh and leave his bedcovers off tonight and just let him wear vest and pants (if its not too cold where you are), I always found dd's itching got worse when she was hot.

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:41

I had to have a weeks worth of daily dermatology treatment a long time ago. It involved thick yellow stuff and bandages from top to toe and my skin was so much improved after that week. Again, it won't totally stop it but you could be taught how to do it easily and you could do it when it begins to get back and before it breaks the skin.

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:42

have you had any dietary help? A friend on here cleared up her twins eczema really fast through diet. I could ask her to let you know what she did.......

sb6699 · 15/03/2009 22:42

What age is he. Does have any food intolerances. This can make eczema flare up.

marie1979 · 15/03/2009 22:42

yeh i bathed him and he has like ermmm compresses to cool his skin when it gets hot and to try stop him scratching running out of options????

OP posts:
frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:43

for tonight, get him to lie in bed and fan the skin for a while to cool it.....sometimes the stress of the itch makes it worse IYKWIM. Relax him if you can.

sb6699 · 15/03/2009 22:44

I am x-posting with everyone - sorry!

Frumpy, I think this was the same treatment my dd had. Hers was really bad on her forehead and we had to smother it in this gunk and cut holes for eyes/nose/mouth in a stocking bandage and put it over her head - she looked like a mini bank robber - worked well though.

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:45

and tapping the skin (even quite hard) can break the itch cycle

frumpygrumpy · 15/03/2009 22:46

yup, thats the stuff Did they paint on red stuff on the open bits? Mine went from just under my chin to my ankles. Red stuff, yellow gunk, gauze, bandages, then clothes and into work [sexy]. It helped enormously.

marie1979 · 15/03/2009 22:47

yes please frumpygrumpy that would be a great help i asked derma about diets but she said it probly isnt that. sb6699 hes 6 years old had it since he was one had a break frm it for a short while but know its back

Do you know about this organisation www.eczema.org/factsheets.html

sb6699 · 15/03/2009 23:07

Really don't mean this to sound patronising it truly isn't but have are you using unscented soaps/washing powder things like that.

I always found as well that washing the bed sheets on a hot wash and hoovering the bed helped (gets rid of dust mites which can irritate).

Sorry again if you've had that question a million times already.

jollydiane · 15/03/2009 23:11

The obvious is often over looked so thank you.

Does anyone know of a foundation that can be used (for me) which does not irritate?

marie1979 · 15/03/2009 23:20

i use surcare for my boys clothers bedding etc.... my son said tonight he wished hed never been born thats awful i feel so sorry for him
