Podmog - I know how you feel- my 5 month baby has had bad excema from 6 weeks old. Some days I used to cry when I saw his weeping open sores and his constant aggitation as he tried to itch all the time. I tried all the creams and ointments from the doctors (including steroids) but none worked. HOWEVER- some things have really helped his excema. SOS Cream from barefoot botancials is like magic cream. Since using it a few weeks ago he has had no more open weeping sores - it is excellent at healing the skin and reduces the itching. I also use SOS bath oil, SOS shampoo and SOS body wash. This range is purely plant based/herbal - it is expensive but worth every penny when you see the improvement on my baby's skin. Also , will only dress my baby in 100% cotton, he drinks HIPP organic milk, wears scratch mits when he is drowsy, asleep and in the bath. I also hoover and damp dust every day in front room and his bedroom. I hope some of this helps.

Hi, my DS is 3.3years now. He was hospitalised at 18months as he got severely infected from the scratching. No one would take me seriously until he went into hospital - try this cream, try this oil. Nothing worked. His skin was so so dry. Wet wraps are good, but he would remove the wraps. I was giving him Piriton each night, just to get sleep and he would often sleep with me. This at least allowed me to keep any eye ( and ear ) on his scratching. Serious sleep deprivation until August last year.. but since then, his skin has dramatically improved. I cream him at night, apply Aveeno bath oil and very very rarely use Hydrocortisone now. The earlier they get the Ezcema in life, the more chance of growing out.
There are the odd patches, but we can manage those.. my son spent the two previous summers in cotton tights. I am looking forward to this one, .
Be positive.. speaking from experience, I have been at the low end.
I have also uses those cotton all in one suits which my DS did manage to escape from.. not supposed to. They are good, but unfortunately when you use so much cream they get rough from the constant washing. Sorry for the rambling, I feel like a skin specialist. DS also had blood tests for allegies too, nothing.

just wondering what it is about devon water that makes it better and if there is any way (water softener?) of reproducing that where you live now?

Lousie I don't think an occasional mention of something who get you thrown off the site its the people who only come to advertise that get flamed

One thing I have found that helps to stop ds scratching at night is keeping the bedroom really cool. I make it cool as possible, lots of fresh air if possible, and a very light blanket. It seems really cold to me but I think I like it too warm probably. It does stop him scratching so much. When his skin was severely bad he wore sleepsuits but when it is a bit better he wears light pyjamas to keep cool even if it means he does scratch.

I also try to soothe him when he wakes to scratch by rubbing his back to keep him calm and get him back to sleep. It doesn't always work when he is in a scratching mood but sometimes it does.

Ds has had Vallergan which works. it sounds as if it might be something to try simply to stop the cycle of scratching. I think getting a proper night's sleep is important to let the skin heal for your child, and for you too.

Hi podmog Pleased you got your dla. I think you should speak to my mum. I had bad eczma from birth and they didnt no what caused. Apparently i cried for 23 hours a day and my parents slept in shifts. Im now 31. eventual i was diagnosed as being allergic to the protein in milk. Whey. This can be in orange juice sausages soups etc manufacturers use it to bulk out products. oh an dit didnt show up on skin tests. you can get pregestimal milk from gp if bottle feeding it doesnt contain whey. I hope yu start to feel better soon can you get a family member to stay over night so you can get a full night sleep. just 1 night you may feel a 100 times better. good luck thinking of you ps my skin looks great now no scars even though had infection in eczma etc.

hi podmog. I'm sorry you are having a rough time. I used to have terrible eczema as a child, i only get it very occasionaly now. stress usually triggers it. have you thought of seeing an aromatherapist? essential oils have an amazing effect on skin conditions. i don't know how old your children are but despite popular belief, aromatherapy can even be used on babies in the right dilution. let me know if you would like any advice on it as i am an aromatherapist.
