DD is 12mths old and severely intolerant to dairy and soya.

Have just had first appt with dietician this morning and she has advised me to try her with some egg but not egg directly iyswim.

Something like a cake which would have egg in it but need something that won't have milk/soya in.

Brain has gone to mush and can't think of anything

I thought custard powder had egg in but it doesn't seem to now looking at ingredients...

TIA

egg but no dairy - hmmmm - that's tricky.

Can you use other milk substitutes - almond milk, for instance?

cmotdibbler · 12/02/2009 12:31

I'd make some pancakes with egg, flour and rice milk

normansmum · 12/02/2009 12:35

what about homemade meat balls? that just uses one egg to bind them.

TheProvincialLady · 12/02/2009 12:38

Custard powder was developed as a substitute for real egg custard by someone whose wife was allergic to egg!

Victoria sponge cake has egg and you can use dairy free marg.

foxytocin · 12/02/2009 12:39

make a veg or beef soup and break an egg in it. give the broth.

foxytocin · 12/02/2009 12:40

most fish fingers on the market have egg in the batter. I know that cause I have egg allergic toddler. M&S fish fingers doesn't have egg in the batter tho.

foxytocin · 12/02/2009 12:41

my dd1 refused Birds (?) custard. I thought it was because it contains dried egg. No?

DesperateHousewifeToo · 12/02/2009 12:53

Would fresh pasta be ok?

Ds can't have this because of the egg but not sure wrt dairy/soya free.

or biscuits made from suitable butter/marg?

TheProvincialLady · 12/02/2009 13:02

Definitely no egg foxy look

She probably refused it because it is a bit grim (but I still love it, with banana)

TheProvincialLady · 12/02/2009 13:03

PMSL at 'always trumps' on the retro ad

simpson · 12/02/2009 13:19

Thanks for all the ideas!!

Unfortunately DD doesn't like pasta so that's out.

She has tried oat milk but gave her very runny poo and have yet to try rice milk...

Meat balls are an idea!! Although she has no teeth, would she be able to gum them?

She does eat fish fingers (youngs ones) which don't have egg in batter. Didn't know some of them did have egg in iyswim...

Most M and S rolls have egg on them but then they might have milk in I suppose.

I always get the bird's eye fish fingers so they don't have egg. I'll bet any luxury type ones will.

Or fish cakes? Again, some do, some don't. Unless you make your own.

normansmum · 12/02/2009 13:37

you could always break meatballs up a bit. they're not as solid as shop bought ones.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/02/2009 13:41

If you make your own cake then you can use pure/vitalite instead of butter, and pick pretty much any recipe!

Or you could make something with pastry and use egg to glaze it.

blowninonabreeze · 12/02/2009 13:42

I use egg in lots of stuff.
Croquettes, dip in flour then egg then breadcrumbs.

Fishcakes, same

Meatballs

Any good.

PS DD2 is 10 months with no teeth and she can eat all of the above. Goodness knows how!

georgiemum · 12/02/2009 13:44

French toast? Or fry-en-deggs as DS calls them. Or does that count as 'direct'? She could try a tiny bit.
Meringue - or is it the yolk that causes the problem?

offerdilemma · 12/02/2009 13:46

or how about using some of your baby's formula as a milk substitute? you could do pancakes then?

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/02/2009 13:48

It's the white that's the allergen georgiemum.

You've reminded me that I haven't made french toast for a while - that's tomorrow's breakfast sorted!

simpson · 12/02/2009 13:52

Dietician said no to scrambled eggs with neocate so pancakes would probably be the same

Surely it would just taste bleeeeh anyway although DD does quite like neocate (mad child!!)

Not sure if she has a problem with egg yet as we have only just worked out it was a dairy/soya intolerance (pants pead - long story)

Fish cakes/meat balls might be good as then we can eat them if she has a problem...

Have you seen this site? It says lacto-intlorent people can eat eggs.

www.lactoseintolerant.org/2007/11/23/eat-this-foods-you-can-eat-without-having-sympt oms/

or here

DesperateHousewifeToo · 12/02/2009 14:47

ds is allergic to egg white and egg yolk.

Probably best to test whole egg otherwise you'll not know whether any other whole products are safe if ok with meringue.

simpson · 12/02/2009 16:27

Georgiemum - she may well be ok with egg as I know its not dairy iyswim...

Guess its just having to be brave as if she does have a problem then the next couple of days are horrid

Will definately try the whole egg first (not yolk or white) and take it from there.

May just have to bite the bullet tomorrow....

Try a teensy weensy bit first and see how she goes.

Good luck!

trixymalixy · 12/02/2009 23:17

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but a dietician avised me to try DS on a bit of something with egg in it before my next appt with the allergy specialist.

i chickened out, which was just as well as his egg skin prick test was massive and the allergy specialist was horrified that she had advised me to try some.

Just one of the many bad pieces of advice the dietician gave me, along with giving him 2 soya yoghurts a day which led to his soya allergy.

I would only try it if her egg skin prick test was negative.

georgiemum · 13/02/2009 10:21

Why is she suggesting trying out egg? Surely if she knows she is allergic then the best thing is to steer clear!

My old boss used to bloat up, throat close and she would go black in the face if she had egg (as we all found out when she had egg in a restaurand - after she had asked the waiter to check with the chef if there was egg in her dish and he said 'no').
