I'm wanting something that he can pick up preferably, like a cheerios type thing.

Rice crispies ? My two eat them dry and a handful keeps them amused for ages.

kalo12 · 03/11/2008 20:53

cool, how old are your two? will an 8 monther be able to pick them up?

MerlinsBeard · 03/11/2008 20:58

you could make them a bit sticky with a splash of his normal milk maybe?

gigglewitch · 03/11/2008 21:00

was wandering in to say ready brek gf

looks like you have it sorted. Mine had that from 6mo. made with warm water til i was sure of which milk they were ok with.

kalo12 · 03/11/2008 21:21

oh brill, now i just have to get him to like the goats milk

OP posts:
kalo12 · 03/11/2008 21:50

we get some mad chocolate-ball things (looks and sounds gruesome but small boys love the stuff) will find out what they are

have you tried giving him the goats milk yet? mine all loved it as soon as they were given it - very handy

MerlinsBeard · 03/11/2008 21:55

erm

Some ideas on here

gigglewitch · 03/11/2008 22:05

choco crackles (morrisons own version) = coco pops (but the orig kellogs have milk powder in afaik)
we pick up all kinds of df&gf in Aldi - go and read some labels, we find they've got the best range of 'normal' stuff that they don't feel the urge to shove butter in everything

gigglewitch · 03/11/2008 22:07

I found this handy.

cmotdibbler · 04/11/2008 13:16

ReadyBrek is not gluten free, and neither are regular rice crispies.

Gorilla Munch is an easy to pick up size

MERLYPUSS · 05/11/2008 21:23

My monsters are 10 months and I think it helps them co-ordinate their hands (also keeps them quiet while I wash up). DT2 is very clever (insert rolling eyes emoticon her) (muck worm) he has worked out that he can lick his hand and they stick to his palm, or alternitively he just hoovers them up from the high chair tray.

AnarchyAunt · 05/11/2008 21:26

You can buy 'puffed rice' which is similar to rice crispies but is just, well, puffed wholegrain rice. More nutrients and less sugar and other added stuff! It is more expensive but they eat so little at 8 months its not too bad iyswim.

kalo12 · 06/11/2008 09:24

but it doesn't have iron in. i'm trying to up his iron as we are gluten free and he doesn't have formulas

kalo
go to your nearest health food store.

All the envirokids cereals are nice and gorilla munch is gfcf but does have loads of sugar.

You will find some like these which are gfcf but not loaded with refined sugar.
there are others too like rice crispies but waaay less sugar

pagwatch · 06/11/2008 09:36

why don't you add multi vit/min drops to his diet with iron in?

pagwatch · 06/11/2008 09:37

Sorry. I am aware that I am gibbering.

When DD was a baby she was gfcf. I wasn't especially worried about iron at any point but did add Bio care vit/min drops to her drinks. And efas of course.

kalo12 · 06/11/2008 09:38

you can't get iron in multi vits for babies. will take him to docs. he's a non eater

Millet porridge. Millet is gluten free and aslo quite high in iron and protein. You can up the iron even further by sweetening it with molasses instead of sugar or honey, or adding dried fruit (apricots, raisins, figs, dates and the the like). You can do this with other cereals too, but remember to serve fresh fruit or fresh fruit juice with it as vitamin C increases absorption.

Holle do some lovely instant cereals, among which a nice millet one, which DD really loved. Apparently you can find them in Waitrose now.

kalo12 · 06/11/2008 09:43

oh brill. i will look out fir it. thanks bragelina.

thanks too pagwatch. what are efas?

OP posts:
kalo12 · 06/11/2008 09:44

is molasses ok for a 9 monther?

OP posts:
Brangelina · 06/11/2008 09:46

Yes, it's only a sugar residue. It's basically all the goodness that gets taken out of sugar during the refining process. I think black treacle is the same thing although am not too sure.

I also used to give my DD nuts and seeds ground up and stirred into things, but that might not be a great idea if your little one is allergy prone.

pagwatch · 06/11/2008 09:49

Kalo
EFA's are essential fatty acids - omegas 3,6 and 9. Good for brain function and seech. Gave them to DD early as DS2 has autism and severe speech delay. But they are good for everyone tbh

pagwatch · 06/11/2008 09:50

obviously speech not seech.

god i need to go back to bed
