can second the envirokids cereals, but they def have loads of sugar. plain cornflakes are GF, but check mainstream brands as often have malt (from barley, i believe). The Whole Earth ones are ok iirc.

pagwatch - i think you were on my other thread. i was getting anxious about some early signs of autism in my 8 month ds, which i knew no health profs would take me seriously, anyway i went cf/gf cos he has a milk intolerance and guess what within a week he started babbling / interacting / responding to name / crawling and cruising.

Do you think i'm being ridiculous? is it just co incidence? How old is your youngest dc? did you go cf/gf from birth?

all my hvs are telling me to get him on formula. to eat this and that him and meetc. Its becoming a bit of a battle and I'm worried about doing the wrong thing. sorry for the hi jack,

sorry kalo - I didn't imediately make the connection.
There are baby forms of efas in boots - can't remember the brand but I think it is Eye-Q.
I don't think you are being ridiculous. DS2 developed ASD at about 20 months . Withdrawing g&C def helped him hugely.
When we had DD I was broadly GFCF during pregnancy and she was gfcf until about two. But I also stopped her vaccinations which for me, with DS2's history, was absoloutely key.

My Doctors resisted all the gfcf stuff initially butthey too have noticedthe change in DS2 so now support it. DD is six and has no aitism or related issues at all.

Are you posting on SN board. There are others doing GFCF there. Also www.autismmedical.com is all about the diet and they have a good forum and resources - although you do have to subscribe £30 I think.

thanks pagwatch - i was wondering about the vaccs too. Did you not have any for dd?

I know i will be under enormous pressure to have them, as we live in an area with an outbreak of measles - infact they want to give 2 mmr a month apart at 12 months in my area!

Ds was quite ill after the 4 month injections, .

What about single injections? Are they just as bad?

I've been trying goats milk formula recently, apparently the casein is a different type, a type that doesn't leak opiates to the brain.

Thanks ever so much for your help.

did your dcs crawl btw?

opiates to the brain? Honestly? do tell me more!

My dd was dairy and gf until very recently. I noticed an immediate change in her behaviour when we first went gf - much less agitated and, dare I say it about a wee baby, hyper-alert. I put it down to not being in pain any more (much gut stuff going on). HOwever, she has been taking Pepti since she was 9mo which is cow's milk based but extensively hydrolysed. Hadn't thought that there might be a problem with this. In fact, I was going to suggest it to you as a supplement to BF to take the pressure off you.

I BF until 13mths, and dd refused formula until 12mths. I was working and not able to express so was going bananas about her calcium intake. I hadn't realised just how much of a worry it had been until she was prescribed a supplement by her consultant and suddenly life was so much rosier.

I was also worried about early signs of autism at about the same age, if not a little older, especially as I teach a kid with Aspergers and dd's behaviour was way too alike for my comfort. It was a developmental phase as far as dd was concerned and she is now a super-confident, clever and outgoing 23mth old.

kalo12 · 08/11/2008 21:53

thanks hobnob, why did you give up gfcf if you noticed such an improvement?

dd has been seeing a GI consultant re dairy and wheat/gluten allergy issues and he asked us to re-introduce dairy from Easter (16 mths - she copes ok with yoghurts & Philly) and to try her with wheat a few weeks before her next appointment which is on Monday, the theory being that as she gets older the allergies will wane. I'm not comfortable with depriving her of so much in her diet without good reason, so I'm happy to try things and see how they go.

The gluten seemed to be going fine (no explosive vinegary poo and crippling abdominal pains and excessive wind). She's had a cold and got a bit bunged up as a result of not eating and drinking so much, and the gluten didn't seem to be changing that. But this week she's had 4 or 5 poo-free days which is not like her, so we've been stuffing her with prunes and kiwi. We got our comeuppance today with a HUGE overly-soft effort. So I don't know if she's just going through one of those phases or if the gluten has something to do with all this. I guess the GI guy will know.

As far as behaviour goes, I'm finding it impossible to tell. She's seemed a bit more hyper than usual, but then we've recently had half term and she tends to get like this after changes in routine. I suppose time will tell.

kalo12 · 08/11/2008 22:52

can i ask you did you have a measles vaccine?

how was your dd with egg?

OP posts:
hobnob57 · 09/11/2008 12:13

She had all of her vaccines. Most of them are shortly after 12 months if I remember correctly. I'd just stopped BF, and she had about 10 teeth coming through at once so it wasn't a great time for her - she seemed to get every bug going. But she's fine now.

Luckily she's also fine with egg. I was convinced she wouldn't be, but we tried her with a soft boiled one & gf toast when she was about 11mths I think and she wolfed it down. It was such a relief, and she pretty much demanded one every tea time for months afterwards. I was happy to oblige given my calcium intake paranoia.
