Vinegar . . . ?

I posted some time ago about DS2 having a (mild but significant to me) allergic reaction after gumming a chip shop chip.

DS1 is allergic to egg, milk and nuts so I had suspected that DS2's reaction would have been caused by some sort of cross contamination with one of those. The allergy nurse also thought so.

Today he had another similar reaction to a jar ( !!! ) of baby food. When I looked at the ingredients the two things that stood out to me were pineapple (not aware he has had this before) and apple VINEGAR [dramatic chord].

Can people be allergic to vinegar? I mean properly allergic?

he could have a Salicylate sensitivity/allergy. Salicylates are in vinegar.
Some people have a low level of tolerance (sensitivity) to salicylates and may have reactions if more than a small amount is consumed at one time. Symptoms of salicylate sensitivity vary but may include asthma-like symptoms (such as trouble breathing and wheezing), headaches and/or nasal congestion, changes in skin color, itching, skin rash or hives, swelling of the hands and feet, swelling of the face, and stomach pain. In severe cases, salicylate sensitivity can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction involving a severe drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness and organ system failure. Avoiding products that contain salicylates is the best defense against a sensitivity reaction.

That has put the wind up me as of course salicylates are in asprin, and that's a classic bad allergy risk isn't it.

Oh well at least I always have DS1's allergy kit with me just in case.

I've been thinking about you. What do you think your doctor/allergy nurse will do, will they test him?

I don't know.

She will test him anyway at a year old to see if he has the same allergies as DS1. If he hasn't he can start eating normally.

She said when I rang her about the first reaction, that if it happened again (and she said it would if it was significant) then I should get him referred to her through the GP and she would test him earlier.

As it looks as if it isn't one of the usual suspects (egg, milk or nuts) I am not sure whether to do so or not. That's one of the reasons I was asking if there was anyone else with an allergy to vinegar.

As I mentioned before though, I have 3 sets of allergy stuff for DS1 (piriton, inhalers, epipens etc) so that I always have a set with me even if I don't have DS1 with me. So luckily for me I don't have an urgent need to get appropriate medication arranged.

So at the moment I am still pondering. Thanks for asking!
