I wanted to share #Oliverscampaign and the resulting Oliver McGowan Mandatory training on learning disability and autism for Health and Social Care Staff which has now passed into law. #Autism

Spotted your username, are you Oliver’s mum? I have done the Oliver McGowan training for work, and I am also a mum to a profoundly disabled girl. You are so eloquent and clear in your message in the training videos. The Oliver McGowan training is probably the only training resource that’s brought me to tears.

RosiePosiee · 05/09/2024 02:20

As an nhs staff member I cannot tell you how much the training has helped us

Paulamc007 · 05/09/2024 05:06

Thank you, yes I am Oliver’s mum

Another NHS nurse who has done Oliver's training, it was heartbreaking, I am so sorry.
For us it is mandatory and I am glad, because, I learnt so much. Thank you for sharing Oliver's story.
I recommend it to all my colleagues as we are all to aware of the gaps in knowledge.

Barleycat · 05/09/2024 06:24

Not a nurse but also did the training at work and found it very moving and impactful as did my colleagues.

Debtfreeme · 05/09/2024 06:54

Loved the training, learned so much. Probably the best training I have ever done.

thank you to you and Oliver

Perzival · 05/09/2024 07:09

I'd love for similar to be mandatory in education as well.

Thank you so much for doing this and making changes for other families. I've seen your posts in a few groups etc that I'm in.

BallerinaFall · 05/09/2024 07:36

I am training to be a lived experience volunteer, it is so important, thank you for all your hard work.

Catsonskis · 05/09/2024 07:46

Oh Paula, I can’t begin to explain the impact the training in honour of your son has done for me and my NHS colleagues. Xxx

WanOban · 05/09/2024 07:59

I have done the training twice at two different employers

It is the most interesting and impactful mandatory training I’ve ever done. It feels like time well spent and I didn’t mind doing it twice within a few months.

I do wish the same kind of training existed for dementia patients. My parent with dementia had terrible experiences in hospital due to a lack of understanding of the condition and its impact. Spoken to with lack of respect, spoken to very loudly as if he was deaf. He had been a vegetarian for decades and was fed meat frequently, he was diabetic and they put sugar in his tea, gave him cakes. It pales in comparison to Oliver’s experience but I do wish HCPs were educated in dementia too.

socks1107 · 05/09/2024 08:25

I have completed the training too and it's been hugely beneficial

Thank you. Oliver’s Training is actually statutory training, it passed into law in 2022. All QCQ regulated staff have to do it

I work with H&SC Staff and this has been so well received everywhere. Thank you so much for all you do.

I thought that all staff had to do the appropriate training for their role, and that Oliver's training whilst being the preferred choice isn't actually mandatory?

Hi @Paulamc007. Another nurse saying a huge thank you. Our trainer and experts by experience were fantastic.

Thank you so much

I did have my petition successfully debated in Parliament last December asking for Oliver’s Training for Education. Not heard anything since

I agree with everyone that this is the best and most powerful mandatory training I have ever done. It shouid be mandatory for all teenagers and adults as well as those in Healthcare education police etc

WhereIsMyDaughter · 05/09/2024 15:46

Is this also mandatory for care providers who are caring for those with a learning disability and autism?

Penguinsa · 05/09/2024 15:50

Thanks for doing this. Our autistic child had a horrific forced anti-psychotic which went very badly wrong in 2022, which put him in a coma like state for 8 months and we expected him to die in there. We have him home now but he still has very limited function but at least can walk again and see again but still cannot speak, write, interact, freezes a lot, we fear he will be like this for life now. In our case zero lessons have been learnt and zero accountability but I hope one day there will be justice for children like this and their families. He was undiagnosed at the time due to camhs delays but everyone knew he was autistic but we just experienced cover ups and attempts to silence complaints and one of staff involved has been promoted.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry. My DD is on antipsychotics and she can't function. She sounds similar to your child but not as severe as being in a coma.

Neverhot · 05/09/2024 16:01

Hi Paula, I'm a 3rd year learning disability student nurse. I'd just like to say we often come across Oliver's story at university. The need for this training and impact it is having is truly phenomenal.

hp2 · 05/09/2024 16:08

I have done this training as a NHS staff member (district nurse) and it haunted me. I actually had to turn off the sound and just read the transcript. I just kept thinking I can’t believe this happened and I would never let that happen on my watch. It is so impactful. I am so sorry you had to go through it. I would recommend anyone looks at this.
