Is kiwi a common allergen? Could my 8 mo be allergic?

Gave dd some kiwi tonight wish she loved but ended up getting quite upset and has a slight rash around her mouth.

This is the 2nd time I've seen a rash around her mouth but i can't remember if we gave her kiwi last time.

Does it sound like an allergy? How can I find out? Might she grow out of it or could it get worse? Any other info? I've not got any allergies myself and have never had to deal with it before.

If she was going to have a major reaction they it would have happened by now so don't panic. An anaphylactic reaction (life threatening allergic reaction) is fairly instantaneous

As for the breast milk it may not sure best thing is talk to your midwife/HV doctor about it

Lmccrean · 29/02/2008 20:44

like lulumama, my dd gets rashes round her mouth (like babies get when they dribble too much) and sometimes hives on arms after kiwi, strawberries and tomatoes. I developed hives eating these foods during pregnancy and 5 years on, i still get them (also get them with red wine and blackcurrant juice).

After reading this, ill be going to see gp to check it out.

Makes my tongue and throat itch!

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 29/02/2008 20:51

Red wine? Nooooooooooo!

If allergic to Kiwi, then pineapple is probably another one to avoid.
My dd is allergic to both. Dietician at hospital said if they are allergic to one then they are probably allergic to the other.
I am sure from what you have said she will be fine.
If there was going to be a severe reaction it would have happened immediately.
When my dd has a severe reaction it ALWAYS happens immediately.

sometimes there is a secondary reaction when they digest the food but its usually less severe. Does sound like an allergic response but babies soemtimes outgrow allergies. Wouldn't give it again until at least one (preferably 3) and then with a bottle of piriton handy.

HereComeTheGirls · 01/03/2008 09:15

I personally wouldn't give it again without talking to your GP, since second reactions can be a lot worse!!

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 02/03/2008 19:30

2 days on her mouth is still a bit rashy, is that normal (i.e. normal in the context of an allergy)?

If you are concerned ring your GP or NHS direct 085 46 47 for reassurance

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 02/03/2008 21:06

Not worried as such, just wondering if it was normal for the rash to last that long, or whether it was an indication of continued exposure (contamination? Or via breastmilk?)?

bumper, i had some allergy testing a few years ago as I came out in a nasty reaction to something and the consultant explained that with food allergies, on the first exposure the body thinks "oh, not sure I like this" and will react. Second exposure is usually worse as body thinks "I had this before, now I know I don't like it" and will react more extremely. I'd avoid them for the time being, and talk to your GP about it; she may be referred for skin prick tests (not sure if she is too young for that though)

LardyMardyDaisyBoo · 02/03/2008 21:20

when I had my reaction, I had a rash for a few days, as well as puffy face and slightly swollen tongue. It got worse over a few days though.

mamazee · 02/03/2008 21:21

think a major allergic reaction would have happened by now.
la leche league do a great leaflet about what foods can cause allergies in little ones.
think kiwi, strawberries and citrus are amongst them .
i get an itchy mouth from kiwis.
she probably just got a little rash and a tickly throat.
check her in the morning but i reckon its a safe bet that it was a mild allergic reaction to the kiwi (i am not a doctor though).

if the rash hurts tomorrow i would highly recommend weleda hypericam and calendula ointment..in a green tube..its fab.

good to go on your allergies too...we have asthma and hayfever in our family so i have been a little more cautious.
Hope she well

Kaz1967 · 02/03/2008 21:25

It's probably just the remains of the rash from the other day things in the breast milk are usually in an out fairly quickly

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 02/03/2008 21:52

I'll not worry then, thanks for the replies. Might go to a drop in at the children's centre and mention it to the HV.

That would sound like the best idea remember though if you get concerned over night there is always NHS direct 0845 46 47 they were great when my friends son was ill they arranged the ambulance and prepared the hospital for his admission as well as calming down his Mum

tatt · 03/03/2008 09:14

if you dose with piriton an allergic rash should go quickly. If it doesn't it might be aused by something else. Always safest to discuss these things with your doctor.

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 03/03/2008 17:57

So i spoke to hv who didn't really know what to do. she said the dr probably won't do much, and if i want to test i should put some kiwi onto her skin and see if there is a reaction

OP posts:
LardyMardyDaisyBoo · 03/03/2008 19:43

bumper I was going to suggest that. One of the things I was tested for was avocado, and the doc asked me to bring one wth me as he didn't have it in his collection (of extracts or whatever is used for the skin prick tests). Well, he cut it open, wiped a bit on my arm and then scratched over it.

I could've done all that myself and saved a four month wait whilst the referral came through.

Kaz1967 · 03/03/2008 20:53

Bump I am sure you would not I would not do that on your own kids collapse far quicker than kids if that is done it needs doing somewhere which has the facilities to resuscitate her just in case Push for a proper referral it may take some time but at least kiwi should be fairly easy to avoid. Try avoiding potato as I am supposed to they shove it in so many things once found it in a fruit strudel
