Is kiwi a common allergen? Could my 8 mo be allergic?

Gave dd some kiwi tonight wish she loved but ended up getting quite upset and has a slight rash around her mouth.

This is the 2nd time I've seen a rash around her mouth but i can't remember if we gave her kiwi last time.

Does it sound like an allergy? How can I find out? Might she grow out of it or could it get worse? Any other info? I've not got any allergies myself and have never had to deal with it before.

yes it is
and yes it could be

hana · 29/02/2008 18:45

ditto
strawberries as well - Id wait to give them too

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 18:46

She's perhaps a little young for kiwi, but I doubt very much she's allergic. You would probably get a similar reaction if you gave her fresh tomato. Some foods just seem to be a little strong for young infants.

I'd stick to the bananas and red apples for the mo.

But if she had a rash?

Kiwi is one of those fruit that has some enzyme in it (jelly won't set if it has kiwi in it, for e.g).

I get a sore prickling feeling in and all round my mouth if I eat kiwi.

DS used to be allergic to kiwi, tomato and strawberries.. was not sure if it was soemhing to do with all the little seeds or the acidity.. he did grow out of it by about age 5, and it never got worse than a rash or blotchines

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 29/02/2008 19:17

She has fresh tomato all the time (loves it!).

Should I just keep her away from it for a while or should I speak to the GP?

apparently quite a common allergy in NZ where they eat them a lot. Less common here but we eat them less.

QuintessentialShadow · 29/02/2008 19:24

I am from Norway, there they advice to wait with Kiwi till baby is at least 12 months, preferably longer. Babies have been rushed to hospital in ambulance with severe allergy, swelling of the tongue and breathing difficulties.

bodiddly · 29/02/2008 19:38

I was about to say what QS said ... they advise to wait until at least 12 months ... lots of people have problems with kiwi (me included)!

Kaz1967 · 29/02/2008 19:51

Talk to your GP it could certainly be an allergy

colditz · 29/02/2008 19:53

yes. I am allergic to kiwi, a couple of people I know are.

Kaz1967 · 29/02/2008 19:54

The reason I mention talking to your GP is there can be a link between kiwi allergy and latex /rubber allergy (which I have) and other fruit

AitchTwoOh · 29/02/2008 19:54

it's one of those latex-related allergies, isn't it? strawbs, kiwis. i would keep away, it's maybe just a sensitivity at this stage.

I developed kiwi allergy after I had ds1 who is also allergic. Ds also has nut allergy and I was told by the allergy specialist that kiwi is one of the group of food allergens that is particularly unpredictable and a person could have a very mild reaction one day and a serious reaction the next time ie go from mild rash/itchy lips one day and anylphylactic shock next time (at the worst.

I personally think it is always best to err on the side of caution for this reason.

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 29/02/2008 20:17

Ok, thanks. Don'tt know if anyone will know here but can it affect my breastmilk? I.e. do I have to stay away from kiwi?

Ok, starting to worry now, if she were going to have a severe reaction how long would it take. She's in bed now, still had a bit of a rash around her mouth but had the kiwi 2 hours ago. She'll be ok won't she?
