This was anaphylaxis wasn’t it? Nuts.

Ds2 (16) has always had hay fever/throat-clearing type symptoms ans the odd rash after food but last night something more serious happened.

he ate 4 Brazil nuts and a few minutes later his throat felt weird and his breathing became noisy. His eyes were red.

We happen to have a neighbour who is a local GP and he kindly came over. He got ds2 to take antihistamine. Then he got an inhaler, then a steroid inhaler. The throat cleared a bit and he sent ds2 to bed saying he should go to hospital if it didn’t settle. He said “we’d know by now” if it was going to be severe (he stayed with us for an hour)

I slept in the same room as ds2. Shortly after going to bed he got very agitated saying his heart felt like it was on fire. I thought it was a panic attack but then he threw up and after that it all subsided. He says his throat still feels a bit “cottony”.

I had assumed the vomiting was a response to the inhaler but Google tells me that vomiting and heart issues are actually part of anaphylaxis especially if food-related.

this morning I obviously called our own GP who ordered a RAST(?) test but that’s not till next Friday. She said normally you call 999 with any breathing issues.

I realised I’d failed to tel, her about the heart and vomiting to called back and gave a message to the receptionist.

dh is in complete denial saying “it could be nothing”.

it’s not though is it?

my neighbour has shown us where their epipen is (it went out of date in 2020).

Not sure what I’m really asking here. I guess a handhold? My older son had a life threatening emergency just a month ago requiring neurosurgery and I’m only just recovering from that!

The book is good.

we may do cashews outside A&E if no reply today, don’t want to leave it too long

Mytortoiseisbetter · 26/07/2022 17:28

All clear on cashews! Annoyed a wheelchair user because we were sitting in the disabled car park but he understood once I told him why we were trying to stay within a few feet of A&E and sympathetic.
Just walnuts to go from the stuff he tested negative to then we will eat a pecan and request a blood test for macadamia nuts as no memory of eating them and no test either.
life is odd.

would you mind posting the title of the book you bought?

I am 12 years in to dealing with allergies but to be honest alot of it is is a bit of winging it and I could do with some reading material.

Well done @Mytortoiseisbetter! is it only Brazils your DS tested positive on?

Gnarly, brazils were the only food he tested positive to. Tree pollen and dust mite were “sensitised”.

how about you?

Walnuts (expected) and Brazils ( a surprise).

He will need a blood test for pecans/ macadamias when I can persuade him!

Our testing was NHS, they didn’t offer dust mite or tree pollen. Although he’s never been an atopic type before, maybe that’s why?

will have a look for your book, thank you!

Mytortoiseisbetter · 27/07/2022 13:59

Hmm, so Brazils and walnuts? I'm worried about walnuts even though we tested positive.
Planning to ask for a blood test for macadamias.
The book says that people allergic to walnuts are almost always allergic to pecans so be careful!

Hi tortoise,

yes I’d read that walnuts and pecans were buddies. I didn’t know (or suspect!) about Brazils back then though.

on the NHS, they took a nut history and only tested us for the ones that we were suspicious of, or couldn’t remember when/ if he’d last had them, or were common allergens.

so he was only tested for 5 types of nut: peanuts, almonds and pistachio which were all negative; Brazils (positive) and walnuts (positive).

they said he would need a blood test for pecans and macadamias, which I will book once I’ve persuaded him! I’m not quite sure why they couldn’t do them in clinic.

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 27/07/2022 15:14

Meant to say- she didn’t test for cashews or hazelnuts as he eats copious amounts of pesto and Nutella respectively!

Mytortoiseisbetter · 27/07/2022 16:19

ok. and has he had pesto and nutella since?
have you reintroduced peanut pistacio and almond?

Yes he’s eaten pesto and Nutella with no problems (we never stopped them to be fair), and he’s munching on peanut M&Ms and cherry bakewells with no problem. Can’t think of anything pistachio we can give him!

the main ones the consultant wanted us to have regularly were peanuts and almonds

Mytortoiseisbetter · 29/07/2022 22:31

Success with a walnut today :)

we are going to request nhs blood test for pecans and macadamia.

then it’s time to think about therapy, possibly in France/US
