Does this sound like an allergy or just bad choice of food?

ds had a jar of 'mum's own' dinner for 4 months earlier on today. It was apricot, butternut squash and chicken risotto. A little while after he sicked some up. Then he had really bad diahorrea(sp) then he twice sicked a load of it up and has generally been miserable. He's just had another dirty nappy which was watery but not as much as before. Would this be something in the food or just that it could have been a bit rich for him?

ps it was a heinz mums own - not literally mums own!

misdee · 12/11/2004 20:11

how old is ds? could just be too rich for him.

LIZS · 12/11/2004 20:14

How old is he ? Both mine didn't really take to apricot straight off. Have vivid memories of throwing pureed apricot straight back at 6 months ! Could also cause his diaorrhea as it is often suggested to feed dried apricots for constipation. Have you tried each ingredient separately first - that way when you do combine them or add one extra you can see what the effect is more easily.

Of course it could be completely unrelated and he coincidentally has a bit of an upset tummy today.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 20:16

he's almost 5 months now - he's been fine with all other tins but been being sick ever since he had this one! (ps thanks for your p.o. - the clothes are on the way to you - sorry for the delay dd fell off the bed onto her head and was a bit off colour the last 2 days)

OP posts:
misdee · 12/11/2004 20:26

thats ok, dont worry bout clothes, just get dd better. mine cracked her head open last week.

whats the ingrediants on the jar?

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 20:29

thanks misdee - she's ok, just unbelievably accident prone - lucky its not been worse!! Ingredients on the jar are; water, butternut squash, apricots, chicken, carrots, cornflour, rice flour, veg oil, unsalted butter, iron sulphate

doesnt seem like any of those foods are high allergy risks to me, but cant find my book atm. it could be a combination of the foods that have amde him sick, too rich for his tummy, or a tummy bug. hope he feels better soon.

The butter could cause a dair reaction. Has he had a problem with anything else with dairy in? Essbee's daughter used to throw up spectacularly after eating any dairy, followed by nasty nappies. She has since grown out of it!

SoupDragon · 12/11/2004 21:19

Dairy, not dair!

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 21:33

sorry guys just had my drunken sister on the phone (she's 13!!!!) so was talking some sense into her!! He hasnt had anything with dairy in before so it could well be the butter - I did think about that when I was writing the ingredients out.

OP posts:
misdee · 12/11/2004 21:35

how did i miss the butter? was looking for other culprits. could well be it.

and tell your sister to stop being so silly, drunk at 13??!! i was busy errrrrrrr well never mind lol.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 21:41

oh she's a bloody nightmare misdee. They all lie about who's house they're staying at and the older lads get drink for them luckily enough she trusts me enough to tell me where she is and what she's doing.

So you reckon butter could be the thing then? Shall i avoid stuff with dairy till he's a bit older and maybe more tolerant?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 12/11/2004 21:44

The reaction you described does sound exactly like Essbee's DD as a baby. The smallest trace would make her vomit etc although now she's fine - just mild eczema after too much cheese.

SoupDragon · 12/11/2004 21:45

Yes, I'd leave it for now and try when he's older.

misdee · 12/11/2004 21:46

It is possible. dd2 reacted to food additives,so even tho i used jars we had to check every ingrediant was food and no additives/preservatives etc. she vomited for england at times.

whats the guidelines for dairy products these days? its al lchanged since i had dd2 and she is only just 2.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 21:52

to be honest i'm not actually sure. When dd was born nearly 3 years ago i was aware of the no milk till they're a year rule but never really thought about the rest!

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 21:53

it must be thought to be ok though if Heinz are putting butter in their 4month jars

OP posts:
misdee · 12/11/2004 21:54

yeah but they put egg an gluten in their jars as well. makes me mroe determined to be a good mum and make my own this time round.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 21:55

yeah dp keeps on about getting a blender and doing our own. Should do it really - how hard can it be??

OP posts:
misdee · 12/11/2004 21:56

i burn water.............

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 22:00

same here lol i wouldnt trust myself to feed the poor boy my cooking!!!

OP posts:
zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 22:23

Hmmm.... he's just sicked up a fair bit off bottle now too - does that sound more like a bug?

OP posts:
SofiaAmes · 12/11/2004 22:42

zephyrcat, if the apricots are dried apricots then they probably have sulfites in them. Many asthmatics and people with food allergies are very reactive sulfites. I am. If I eat or drink anything with sulfites (even small amounts), I get strong stomach cramps, bad diarrea (sp?) and a severe asthma attack. I avoid all dried fruit, as often it's not labled properly and wine, even foods cooked in wine.

zephyrcat · 12/11/2004 22:45

never knew that about dried fruit. I'm allergic to most 'normal' fruit like apples - but dont know exactly why

My DD is a nightmare with food. Keep trying different stuff, jars, home-made, anything to get her to eat a variety. She's very fussy and does occasionally literally vomit food back up. Usually cheesey stuff.
