my dd2 is 13 mths and is sick every time i give her anything with cows milk in it. ie cheese, butter, yoghurt and tiny amts of cows milk in her cereal.

she has been on enfamil ar for reflux and they have said she must stop taking it now.

the hv have been really unhelpful saying shouldnt put her on soya milk just keep trying cows milk for 2 wks even if she is sick every time.

do i try goats milk? or soya milk? she only has 2 bottles a day but she still needs some sort of milk replacement.

any help/advice please. xxxx

where else can they get fat?has goats milk got enough fat?

Tartanmam · 01/07/2007 22:07

Not sure what you could use for the fat but my ds is allergic to dairy and i've never been too worried about that, just the calcium. He doesn't like rice milk but has soya yogurts and still bf twice a day.

I'm still waiting for an apointment with the paed and dietician (in Aug unless they change it again) but from the few people i've spoken too calcium is the bigger issue.

There is a book 'optimum nutrition for babies and small children' which i've found really useful if you skip the weaning / puree bits, its written by a dietician who thinks it is quite safe to avoid dairy products as long as you are 'vigilent and ensure a varied diet'. Most of the recipies that do contain dairy mention if it is suitable to use alternative milks - like rice, and its prob the first recipie book for children i've found that isn't determined to put cheese and cream in everything. Might be worth looking to see if your library has a copy?

moljam · 01/07/2007 22:10

thanks i'll visit library tomorrow, there usually good,if they dont have something they order it in.

hi i tried putting a tiny amt of goats milk in her porridge and she wasnt sick.

so tomorrow morning i will put more in to see if she is still ok im keeping my fingers crossed.

ive booked doc appt for thurs.

im a bit worried reading all your comments on calcium deficiency so i will ask about that at the appt.

we've just been prescribed calcium supplements, and I was on them when bf on the dairy and soya free diet

jeanini · 09/07/2007 06:43

hi im glad to say that she is now on goats milk and not sick.

i took her to the doctor and he said keep trying the cows milk in the future but as she is having goats milk ok no need to refer her to a dietician.

she is ok with goats milk yoghurt as well.

my dd was on free prescription formula till she was about 4 years old as she was intolerant to cows milk and goats milk.

She is now just over 5 and seems to be ougrowing the intolerance...I no longer have to read all the labels on everything but she still reacts slightly to 'neat' cows milk etc.

A fairly new product has come onto the market recently called 'lactofree' cows milk in a green and white tall carton with a cow's head on the front which can be bought from most supermarkets...usually found amongst the chilled soya milks etc. She is perfectly fine on this as she is obviously allergic to the 'lactose' part of the milk. Not sure if this would be any good for such a small tot as it's semi-skimmed...but maybe you could have an additional supplement of some sorts as well? ...maybe a Dr or HV could advise you?...and not sure if it would be any use if it is the 'protein' part of the milk that causes the allergy/intolerance.

I was told along the line to introduce cows milk in small doses into foods which can be cooked...ie porridge etc as the heat destroys the lactose part I think?...and introducing it helps to desensitise them.

Best of luck...I know how difficult an allergy can be!....just so glad my dd seems to be outgrowing it so she can eat everything her friends do!

talie101 · 13/07/2007 19:00

Ps....if you type in 'calcium rich foods non dairy' on the internet...it brings up some sites that have lists of foods containing calcium to boost their intake.

Best of luck.

Anyone recommending soy milk should mention that it's a common allergen and that there is a higher rate of nut allergy in children who have been given it. For those reasons it's always best to try goats milk or lactose free milk before soy.

Leati · 14/07/2007 10:42

Soy milk is good and is healthy. My daughter gets a tummy ache if I give a glass of milk but she does okay with small amounts of cheese, butter, and so on.

Leati · 14/07/2007 10:43

I have never heard that about soy milk before but my son's doctor had be give soy formula when he was a baby.

tatt · 14/07/2007 10:55

Study showing higher levels of peanut allergy in children given soy milk. Unfortunately gps receive very little training in dealing with allergy.

dd (5) refused any kind of milk when I stopped bf at 13 months. I made sure she got calcium from other sources and now she eats a little cheese but no butter or milk if she can help it.
