my dd2 is 13 mths and is sick every time i give her anything with cows milk in it. ie cheese, butter, yoghurt and tiny amts of cows milk in her cereal.

she has been on enfamil ar for reflux and they have said she must stop taking it now.

the hv have been really unhelpful saying shouldnt put her on soya milk just keep trying cows milk for 2 wks even if she is sick every time.

do i try goats milk? or soya milk? she only has 2 bottles a day but she still needs some sort of milk replacement.

any help/advice please. xxxx

Bummping for you. We used Wysoy formula until DS was about 18 months but I think it's not too popular with some people as it's quite sweet. I think. Your HV is being very unhelpful - would the doctor help? Actually our dr was great and we even got Wysoy on prescription.

Saturn74 · 30/06/2007 10:54

DS2 had rice milk with added calcium, but that is also quite sweet, and he was about 2 yrs, IIRC.
I think it would be useful to ask your GP for a referral to a dietician asap.

moljam · 30/06/2007 10:58

we use rice milk with added calcium.my ds is 18 months and has had diarhoa and sickness on and off since he was tiny.gp wont do anything, even when it lasted without any stops for 4 months.so we thought wed try.since starting it hes happier, sleeps better and the only time hes had diarhoa since is when we ran out of rice milk and he had to have cows milk for a day.its slightly more expensive but well worth it imo.

HonorMatopoeia · 30/06/2007 10:59

I had to go onto goats milk at the same sort of age as your Dd. Allergy seemed to clear up after a few years and I now drink cows milk withno side effects. Could you see the dr about what to put her on if your hv is being as helpful as a chocolate teapot?

LunarSea · 30/06/2007 11:35

ds had goats milk at about this age - although his reaction to cows milk was different (excema). Soya milk was even worse with him than cows milk was. Like Honor he's also now fine with cows milk products - yoghurt, cheese, etc.

Peachy · 30/06/2007 11:42

ds3 has received enfamil lactofree on rpescription since age 6 months, he's 4 ina few weeks and we chose to en dit recently so we could move him on to Soya (easier for Nursery to have cartons than amke up formula). damned good stuff.

DS1 has soy formula (was all there was then) and has lost teeth as a result, my ocusin lost all hers!

Peachy · 30/06/2007 11:43

Moljam can you get a referral to a nitritionist? just that iirc rice milk is too low in fat for a child under three (although its nice, is what i drink)

moljam · 30/06/2007 12:17

is it?i hadnt thought of that!i will visit gp and ask for reffereal.thankyou,i really hadnt realised

Peachy · 30/06/2007 14:02

Phew- I didn't offend you!

Its just what we were told (Ds1 and DS3 get a private nutritionist at a therapy clinic they attend for ytheir SN).

jasperc163 · 30/06/2007 15:09

They can carry on on prescription milks for quite a while - really you need to see a paed or a dietrician. DD is on Neocate Advance and paeditrician said she could stay on this if reqd up til age of 5.

As has been pointed out - non dairy alternatives like soya and rice can be too low in fat really. It depends to a degree on how well your dd eats otherwise? Mine is very fussy and so we partly need the Neocate to cover off a few nutritional bases.

What our sietician did say is that when giving a dairy free diet, supplement other foods with olive oil to make up for the fats found in dairy foods naturally.

moljam · 30/06/2007 15:25

peachy, ofcourse im not offended!!glad you said as i didnt know.he does have good diet otherwise and seems fine with other dairy such as yoghurts, cheese etc but was drinking 4 pints of milk a day!where else can they get fat that may be missing from having rice milk?

moljam · 30/06/2007 15:26

aah we use olive oil when cooking

geogteach · 30/06/2007 15:57

DS2 has nutramagen until 2 years and then grew out of it. DD had soya til about the same age, both now fine with dairy but choose not to drink any milk.

Jaybay · 30/06/2007 16:28

Sorry about late reply. My 4th had a terrible time digesting formula milk and then when she went onto cows milk we had a terrible time. She would wake continuously with tummy ache, she would have high temperatures and sickness. I have six children and she is the only one who could cry until phyiscally sick. We put her on goats milk, we actually bought a goat and milked her ourself. We also made ice cream and other things with the milk. Someone told me that goats milk was low in folic acid. So we incorporated extra foods rich in folic acid. She was thin, had black colouring under her eyes and was very pale. We avoided soya due to reading an article in the Observer which argued that soya milk may not be the safest milk to drink. We took her to a pediatritian at the age of two. He was great as he gave her a full m.o.t and he found that she was very fit and healthy. However, she would be prone to asthma and eczema. At the mo she is fine and although she does have some cows milk and yoghurts with cows milk we do have to watch it.

jeanini · 30/06/2007 16:59

thankyou so much for comments so far. xx

today at tescos ive bought unsweetned soya milk and goats milk to try.

but ive just read the soya milk label smallprint and its sweetned with applejuice which my little one is sick on.

so i will just try putting a tiny bit of goats milk with her porridge in the morning and see if shes sick or not.

i will book appt for her to see the doc. i wish she could stay on enfamil a r as she likes it and it contains calcium vitamins etc but for some reason they say she should only have it for 6 mths, she has been on it for about 10 mths already.

i might try and ring the manufacturer to see if safe to dring for a longer period.

does goats milk contain fat?we did try carton of that and he seemed fine but its harder to get hold of round here.
could always buy a goat!

ArtichokeTagine · 30/06/2007 17:44

our DD is only 10 months and paed dietician recommended rice milk with added calcium. I do BF twice a day as well though. She loves the rice milk.

moljam · 30/06/2007 17:45

ArtichokeTagine ,did they mention lack of fat in rice milk or does the 2 bf make up for it?

ArtichokeTagine · 30/06/2007 17:50

They didn't mention the lack of fat. But they did know I was just looking for a milk to mix with food and to give her while I am at work during the day. This thread was the frist time I had heard it might not be good as a alternative to BF. I have another appointment in Monday and will ask about it then as I had intended to wean of the breast this summer.

ArtichokeTagine · 30/06/2007 17:51

lots of spelling mistakes and typos there - sorry.

catesmum · 30/06/2007 19:52

for a child as young as one they should prescribe you a formula such as Nutramigen, Neocate or Pepti as rice milk is virtually fat free...and chldren who can't have dairy usually need all the calories and calcium they can get as they're diet is going ot be pretty low on these

ArtichokeTagine · 30/06/2007 23:32

We have tried all those Catesmum. But DD hated them all as they taste so yuk. Dietician said it was unlikely I would ever get her to drink them when she knew breastmilk was coming later in the day. Had I been willing to wean her from breast she may have realised she had no other option. Because I was mix feeding dietician thought rice milk would be fine.

catesmum · 01/07/2007 12:42

sorry...i didn't read all your post...and we used rice milk for cooking...if you're still breastfeeding have you cut dairy out of your diet? We saw the biggest change when I cut it out as well as our dd2

Peachy · 01/07/2007 13:30

Arti I agree about the BM coming later thing but have you tried the enfamil alctofree if it is suitable? I ask because I hate sya / nutramigen pongs etc etc bt I will use the enfamil myself (also being intolerant) and its much, much nicer. We get that on prescription, but its an American brand IIRC and you have to ask for that brand
