I am trying to get a good solid translation for phrases for a freind, she needs to make sure their is no confusion, for obvious reasons.

  • No ice please.
  • No fruit please, I am allergic.
  • It will make me ill!
  • Anaphylactic shock.

And any other helpful phrases you can think of to explain to waiters etc.

  • Raw tomato.
  • Raw apple.
  • pomegranite

Plus loads of other fruits but I will have to check the list to make sure I get them all.

Skribble I am not a native Italian speaker but hope these will be of help...

  • No ice please - Senza ghiaccio, per favore

  • No fruit please, I am allergic - Sono allergica alla frutta / Non posso mangiare la frutta, sono allergica

  • It will make me ill! - Mi fara male

  • Anaphylactic shock - shock anafilattico

  • Raw tomato - Pomodoro crudo

  • Raw apple - Mele crudo

  • pomegranate - Melograno

  • Does this contain fruit? - questo contiene la frutta?

*It could make me have a serious allergic reaction - mi possa fare una reazione allergica molto grave

Skribble · 13/05/2007 22:07

Oh thanks so much.

I have the list of specific fruits she can't have but I left it somewhere, I will get them tomorrow.

Skribble... I teach Italian. I may not be on here in the next couple of days (trying - hahaha - to concentrate on some work!), but you can CAT me with the list, or anything else you want translated and I'll reply to you as soon as I get it.

Skribble · 13/05/2007 22:21

Ta much, I still have a Spanish translation to sort out for Wed, arghhh. Must get the phrases I need for that sorted out.

Ellbell · 13/05/2007 22:32

No probs. Logging off now, but feel free to CAT.

  • I am allergic to..
    Sono allergica a...

  • Cherries [le ciliege]

  • Apples [le mele]

  • Pineapple [l'ananas]

  • Melon [il melone]

  • Kiwi [i kiwi]

  • Plum [le prugne/le susine]

  • Coconut [il cocco/la noce di cocco]

  • peach [la pesca]

  • grapes [l'uva]

  • pomegranate [la melagrana]

  • Physalis [absolutely no idea!]

  • parsnip [la pastinaca]

  • sweetcorn [il mais]

  • banana [la banana]

  • Walnut [le noci]

  • Hazlenut [le nocciole]

  • Almond [le mandorle]

  • Raw basil [il basilico]

  • Raw Coriander [il coriandolo]

  • cucumber [il cetriolo]

Sorry for failure on physalis. Have no recollection of ever having eaten it in Italy. I haven't bothered putting 'raw' basil/coriander because I'd prefer to err on the side of caution. Herbs are unlikely to be 'cooked to death' in Italy, so best to just say she's allergic full-stop IYKWIM. But if she wants to add it, raw is 'crudo'.

HTH

Hei skribble, just seen this. Ellbell has done a great job. I don't have a clue about physalis either. What is it?

Ellbell · 14/05/2007 23:34

Ciao Franca ! Shall we agree that physalis is not eaten in Italy? (Was going to say that nor are parsnips, since a friend told me that they are only given to cattle. But maybe that's just her...!?)

franca70 · 14/05/2007 23:36

Ciao bella ! what is it exactly? a root vegetable?

chocolattegirl · 14/05/2007 23:42

My flatmate used to dip physalis in chocolate and eat them - they're like a cherry but it comes with leaves around the fruit. You sometimes see them served on the side of chocolate gateaux, with the old trailed chocolate sauce/sprinkled icing sugar effect.

Skribble · 14/05/2007 23:43

A hundred thousand thankyous.

I will make up a little card for her now similar to the one she has in english.

Physalis .

Ellbell · 14/05/2007 23:47

Franca... yes, a root veg. Like a carrot, only white. (I think this proves my point that Italians don't eat them, LOL!)

My only knowledge of parsnips in Italian comes from Day VI, story 10 of the Decameron, where the word appears in the sermon of Frate Cipolla:

'E in brieve tanto andai adentro, che io pervenni mei infino in India Pastinaca, là dove io vi giuro, per l'abito che io porto addosso che io vidi volare i pennati, cosa incredibile a chi non gli avesse veduti; ma di ciò non mi lasci mentire Maso del Saggio, il quale gran mercante io trovai là, che schiacciava noci e vendeva gusci a ritaglio... ecc. ecc. ecc.

Just for you, Cali. We aim to please! (Luuurve that story... it's pure genius!)

Risotto would be a good option, I guess. (Changing the subject here from literature to allergies!) Also creamy pasta sauces which are less likely to be garnished with/contain tomatoes. (Am remembering restaurant in Siena... pici con funghi porcini and cream and something... aaaah!)

franca70 · 15/05/2007 09:27

SKRIBBLE: physalis is chichingero, or alchechengi. It's a winter fruit, so if she's going now she won't encounter it.
Chocolattegirl, yes, I used to eat them covered in dark chocolate as well, there's a shop in Milano, Galli, which is specialized in chocolarte alchichingeri... but again, only in November-December .
I love il Decameron (studied it all for my first exam of Italian literature), thanks Ellbell.
As for allergies, Califrau is right, there's not much awareness in Italy towards allergies and many italians will dismiss them as "fixations, I'm afraid. She will need to be firm. Pasta alla carbonara could be safe option! But the attitude is changing, and the main supermarkets now have a small section dedicated to nut free, wheat free, etc products.

franca70 · 15/05/2007 09:29

Ellbell we should have a thread with quotes from the decameron!

Ellbell · 15/05/2007 09:48

Franca - I need to know how to pronounce that...

Ellbell · 15/05/2007 10:36

In bocca al lupo (possibly an unfortunate metaphor, in the circumstances!), Franca.
