Kiwis are highly allergenic. I cna't eat them as they make my ears and mouth feel all itchy and tingly , my mum was the same.

Trinityrhino · 12/04/2007 12:08

Ross is allergic to Kiwi...

Whoooosh · 12/04/2007 12:09

They make my mouth sore if I eat more than a couple of slices....

sauce · 12/04/2007 12:10

Yes.[sigh] I'm also allergic to kiwi. I have a severe latex allergy & apparently kiwis, avocados, bananas are all in the latex family. So far I've only had to rule out kiwis. These allergies are such a nuisance!

Boco · 12/04/2007 12:11

I read somewhere that more and more people are becoming allergic to kiwi, and that you shouldn't give them to children under a certain age, but can't remember what age.

My dp has that reaction with melon - and his lips swell up. I must admit to finding it pretty funny when he gets the big lip thing (not dangerous or anaphylactic or anything, just looks like he's had botox)

smeeinit · 12/04/2007 12:15

oh bum! does look like ive developed an allergy then. i love kiwis.

Yep my dd is too, showed up on a recent skin prick test. Been adviced to avoid them now and she is also already allergic to bananas.

Spagblog · 12/04/2007 13:32

I developed a kiwi allergy, but luckily it is the only thing I am allergic to.
I get the itching and sore throat thing

dejags · 12/04/2007 13:34

I have this with aubergine. Makes my mouth and lips all tingly - I had never considered an allergy though - just thought it was the taste.

Hilllary · 14/04/2007 20:07

I am allergic to Kiwi, nuts and Pineapple does the same thing to me.

themoon66 · 14/04/2007 20:11

Me and DS have this problem with fresh pineapple. We get what looks like deep cuts in our tongues. Tinned pineapple is ok though.

I am allergic to fresh apples... i get migraine and am violently sick 20 mins after eating one. Cooked is fine and so is juice. Odd.

Fruit allergies are horrible and always feel very unfair somehow.

Hilllary · 14/04/2007 20:13

Fresh pineapple is listed in the high risk foods for anaphylactic shock. I cant go near it.

williamsmummy · 14/04/2007 23:09

The reactions to raw fruit and veg is oral allergy syndrome.

Obviously something to avoid, as it can turn serious. The highly allergic sometimes go to the extreme of never eating the food even if cooked just in case a part of the food is not cooked throughly.
Cooking the fruit /veg changes the cellulose, but only at a high temp.

Kiwi , like other fruit and food allergies are on the increase.
Kiwi is a reletively new allergy and there has only been one study on this , which was carried out by southampton hospital five years ago or so.

The study concluded that children who have kiwi allergy have be very careful to avoid, as each reactions history seems to become quicker reacting / to anaphylaxis with each exposure.
This is not usual, and is unlike any other food allergy. Its a myth that each exposure to peanut/nuts is going to cause bigger reactions each time.
Anaphylaxis occurs with other factors in to play with each individual episode.

Kiwi is related to tree pollen, and of course other fruit like banana and latex.

My son has tree pollen allergy , so this protein matches the kiwi fruit. ( according to his over reactive immune system!)

Oral allergy syptoms are of course more reactive during the tree pollen season, if the person has tree pollen allergy.
A mildly reacting person may find it easier to eat the food in the winter , rather than the summer, or have less of a reaction.

But as with all allergies of this nature caution is advised.

I do find that kiwi fruit is easy to avoid for my son in the main part , its the peanut /beans/yeast extract / dog that drive me potty!!

nallydoolally · 14/04/2007 23:15

i get this from kiwi and pineapple as well

lucy5 · 14/04/2007 23:19

I read sonmewhere that kiwis are related to strawberries which are highly allergenic.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 14/04/2007 23:21

Yup kiwi and pineapple for me too, and I ahve a dairy intol . I had bad throat swelling after blackcurrant squash too once so have to avoid that brand. And fresh tomatoes actually. Bleedin annoyng.

Aren't kiwi's supposed to be the most hghly allergenic food, as in most common? Whislt pear and lamb are the least 9and hence fabulous for weaning)

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:28

I have this too with:

apples
peaches
nectarines
plums
cherries sometimes
pears sometimes
tomatoes if green or v firm red ones

All fine cooked though.

It's a bugger. I love apples Have recently tried eating apple chopped up and not chewing it much and it seems OK-ish. Which is odd as it was the one that was worst.

themoon66 · 15/04/2007 00:07

Hunker... I have the apple problem too. Chopped up and eaten very slowly in little bits works occasionally,

Cooked... no problem

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 00:08

Aren't we odd!

I think it's the biting into a whole apple with front teeth thing that really gets me - front gums swell up.

herbgarden · 15/04/2007 16:46

I'm the same hunkermunker - everyone thinks I'm odd. But, having had some tests a few years back, these items (plus raw carrots, raw potatoes, if you peel them and then rub your eyes you might find they swell and itch slightly) are all in the birch pollen family. You might also therefore get hayfever as a reaction to the birch pollen. I was so glad when I found out that I wasn't odd. The oral allergy thing often develops in adults rather than being in children and something you grow out of although obviously children are allergic to lots of things. I'm very nervous about giving ds new things ( 9 months) as I am from a very "allergic" type family....

herbgarden · 15/04/2007 16:48

Ps, like everyone else, I can eat things in tins and also cooked up. I have lots of tins of pears/peaches in my cupboard !

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 16:49

I get birch pollen hayfever - early in the year rather than high summer. Have it now.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 15/04/2007 18:52

Me too, Hunker- and ds2 had a reaction to sttrawberry last night and seems to haev the hayfever.
