DS has asked for a chocolate as a Christmas gift

I want to ask father Christmans for him to outgrow his allergies...

Tatt, have you heard of Carob? I wonder if it would be OK as a chocolate replacement...

yes I've heard of it. I've even tried it. It might be acceptable if you've never eaten chocolate but it's nothing like the real thing if you have tasted that.

We use Tesco finest swiss 72% plain chocolate for ds2 (although beware, as we found the they have 2 differnt types of packaging, same bare codes, etc, but one contains milk, the other doesn't, as I found to my displeasure this week]

The ingredients for the one without milk is: Cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, flavouring, cocoa solids 72% minimum. It also says (as do most things these days) this product may contain traces of nuts as it is made in a factory that uses nut ingredients.

Not sure if this may be any good?

Apart of the chocolate mint he ate this afternoon DS has not touched a chocolate in almost 2 years. I don't think he remembers...though, having said that, he hated the one he tried today.

does he like ginger? My partner eats carob coated ginger and says that's nice. I think you can also get carob coated raisins. As they are normally sold loose I expect the contamination risk is higher than some of the bars with a "may contain" warning. You could try phoning a few manufacturers and finding out if the allergens are on the same line. Think I'd try the raw nibs.

Health food stores might be better than supermarkets. At our local store the staff are quite well informed.

oops, just seen your message Heartmum2jamie, I have got one of those but hesitating about the "may contain traces of nuts". Thank you

Tatt, I have only tried ginger once and his face got all puffy. But have seen some carob bars. According to the last ELISA test he doesn't have a sensitivity to it, but I'm not sure if it is because he has never tried it . Thanks, I have seen a ginger free carob bars at local health shop, I may give it try

just checked after eights. They are milk and nut free but have soya lecithin. I know some people can tolerate that but I think your son may be one of the exceptions?

Chandra · 13/12/2006 21:52

Nope, he reacts to soya lecithin too

But many, many thanks for checking.
