What could my DD be allergic to in soup?

MissElodie · 17/08/2013 19:12

I have recently given my DD (nearly 3 years) Asda Chunky chicken and Vegetable soup and she has come up with a red blotchy rash around her mouth. I gave it her twice to be sure and the second time it happened again.

I have today given her a Baxters Vegetable soup and the same thing has happened again but worse. Her lips started to swell and her neck also went red and she was itching it. She also started itching the eczema on her wrist (not sure if this is a coincidence?).

I think she may be allergic to eggs in their pure form and in mayonnaise as the same thing happens if she has mayonnaise but there is no egg in the ingredients.

She seems fine in herself and the rash disappears after 10 mins or so but I cannot figure out what the allergy may be to? I think it is quite mild so wasn't going to make an appt for her to see the GP about it but just mention whenever I next took her but this may well be a good few months?

Has anyone had anything similar? Is there anything you can see in the ingredients that it may be? ( I am probably missing something obvious!)

Could it be celery? That's often listed on allergy advice sections.

MissElodie · 17/08/2013 19:15

I was just in the middle of doing it - didn't think anyone would answer that fast!

Thanks

Thanks - there doesn't seem to be celery in the Asda soup and my DD will on rare occasion eat a little bit of celery on its on and is fine with that.

Is she fine with garlic in other things? And tomato?

nextphase · 17/08/2013 19:29

Mayo usually has egg in - I've just checked our Hellmanns Mayo, and plastered all over the front is we only use free range eggs!

If you look at the allergy box section of the ASDA, does it mention celery? It could be in the natural veg flavouring?

MissElodie · 17/08/2013 19:38

She does have both garlic and tomato in other things yes e.g Spag bol and garlic bread and she is fine with that. Thinking back now I think she used to get a rash around her mouth when she was younger if she had a specific Hipp Organic dish - can't remember which one but I think that may have been a tomato based one?

Just checked the allergy advice for Asda and it just says gluten and wheat.

My son got a similar mouth rash from tomato puree or passata. But not the more dilute type of tomatoes or fresh tomatoes.

TeamSouthfields · 17/08/2013 19:45

If lips swell this is a medical emergency!!!!!

TeamSouthfields · 17/08/2013 19:46

Yeast ? Or wheat?

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 17/08/2013 19:49

Yeast? My ds used to get a similar rash from marmite.

chocoluvva · 17/08/2013 19:49

Yeast extract perhaps? It is more allergenic than the yeast used as a raising agent in bread etc.

Flavouring often has celery in it.

Pepper?

DoItTooJulia · 17/08/2013 19:49

Rapeseed can be allergenic.
There is a list of allergens which, by law, must be listed. If the products contained any of those it would be very clearly marked. Not all allergens are on this list though.

Sconset · 17/08/2013 20:00

Celery would have been my suggestion!
Followed by tomatoes.
Or is it possibly the washing up liquid you used on the pan? My DS is v sensitive to milk, and one of the ecover liquids is milk and chamomile... I hadn't realised DH had bought that one, but it affected DS!

yegodsandlittlefishes · 17/08/2013 20:01

So it could be gluten or wheat?

Here are the two lists, with ruled-out or unique ingredients crossed out, leaving ones in common and common allergens in bold.

Water, Potato (11%), Carrot (11%), Chicken (9.0%), Onion (6.0%), Garden Peas (5.0%), Modified Maize Starch, Tomato puree, Chicken Flavoured Bouillon [Natural Chicken Flavouring, Salt, Yeast Extract, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder], Vegetable Flavoured Bouillon [Salt, Yeast Extract, Sugar, Leek Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Natural Vegetable Flavouring, Anticaking Agent (Silicon Dioxide)], Yeast Extract, Rapeseed Oil, Wheat Flour, Salt, Parsley, Onion Powder, Parsley Extract, Sage Extract, Ground White Pepper, Colour (Carotenes)]

Water, Carrots, Onions, Red Lentils (4.5%), Potatoes, Cauliflower, Leeks, Peas, Sweetcorn, Cornflour, Wheatflour, Sea Salt, Yeast Extract, Concentrated Tomato Paste, Honey, Garlic Puree, Sugar, Dried Onion, Celery Seed, Vegetable Oil (could also be rapeseed oil), Herb and Spice Extracts, White Pepper, Parsley.

MissElodie · 17/08/2013 20:36

Thank you all so much for your suggestions and yegods for your comparison lists - very useful.

She is fine with bread so would that rule out gluten and wheat?

I thought it must be yeast extract but now I realise vegetable oil can be rapeseed oil I'm wondering if it could be that as vegetable oil is in mayo and sour cream dip which gets the same reaction too? Perhaps its not eggs after all, I assumed it was as I had an egg allergy when I was younger.

Do you think it is worth asking GP for an allergy test referral?

MissElodie · 17/08/2013 20:40

sconset that's interesting re the washing up liquid. Gosh your DS must be so sensitive - bless him. I've not changed mine so don't think its that - thanks.

Tattva · 17/08/2013 20:44

This happens to me if I eat anything with Rapeseed oil in it. I have to take piriton the minute I feel my lips itch or they will swell and go red and blotchy.

Could it be this?

DoItTooJulia · 17/08/2013 20:46

Yes to allergy test!

Some people are so allergic to rapeseed that they can tell if a field is planted with it when they drive past!

Hope your dd is ok!

Trizelda · 17/08/2013 20:48

My friend's son reacts like this if he has any contact with peas. Even one by mistake in his school lunch causes problems with sweling of lips etc

yegodsandlittlefishes · 17/08/2013 20:59

Yes to allergy test, he could be allergic to more than one thing.

I forgot to highlight the white pepper too.

MousyMouse · 17/08/2013 21:03

tomatoes?
my dc are not allergic but sometimes get a rash on their skin when tomatoe juice gets on there.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 17/08/2013 21:06

Sorry - she, not he!

Yes, gluten and wheat are probably rules out...However a bad reaction like this can sometimes be a completely new allergy to something a person has eaten without trouble in the past. It can happen to adults, as well as children.

Try to avoid these soups from now on, an allergic reaction like this around the mouth and neck is very serious as if her airway is blocked, she can't breathe.

Hope you have liquid Piriton at home, MissElodie! (but even this might not be effective enough if her airway becomes blocked. Check with your doctor whether you need to carry something in case she has a bad reaction to something.)
