Can anyone help my friend with birthday party recipes for a little boy who can't have dairy or eggs?

My friend is holding a birthday party next week for her dc but one of her guests is a little boy who has dairy and egg allergies. He was recently very upset at a party where he couldn't eat anything at all and my friend would like to make sure she has some nice food for him. She has bought dairy free ice-cream but would like a cake/muffin recipe if possible.
Any ideas?

Yes - thank goodness! Most supermarkets sell their own and the big brands are often made with vegetable oil - obviously do check individual packs as some are branded as extra buttery and made with butter... but it's a real staple in our house. Tomorrow I'm making these cinnamon palmiers for brekkie :)

Whoops - sorry for pointless repetition... didn't see trixymalixy's post over the page.

You have no idea how excited I am about that! Thanks!

Plain pom bears in the red packet are ok, as are Fox's Party Rings.

Grapes / carrot sticks / that kind of thing is good party food that everyone can eat.

Here's my mum's recipe for Mocha Squares - it's a dead easy tray bake and because it contains Camp coffee rather than real even children love it. It's my regular for parties & school cake sales.

Pom bears are ok now??? !!! Shock

Never used to be. Trouble is DS is 12 now so probably would be horrified if I bought him some.

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 09:15

I wouldn't have thought of ready made puff pastry being dairy free! I just discounted it as I assumed it would be made with butter rather than veg oil. I'll have to check the ingredients next time I'm shopping, it would be great to be able to make a pie or pasty for DS3!

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 09:17

There is a cheap version of Jammy Dodgers that are dairy free in Tesco - the brand ones are made with butter, but the cheapy ones (Jack and Jill rings a bell for some reason, not got a pack in the cupboard to check name today, but they're only about 54p) are made with veg oil.

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2012 10:13

Jammy Dodgers - the brand ones - have recently stopped being made with dairy. Only recently mind you. HOWEVER I saw a packet of mini jammy dodgers for sale and was going to get them for DS1, checked and they had whey powder in them. I presumed that the recipe had changed back but, no, the normal sized ones were still dairy free the next time I checked. Confused Of course this can change at any time!

Maz007 · 26/08/2012 13:56

balloonslayer thanks so much for that! Thought I'd dreamt that pom bears had milk in then. They definitely did didn't they? DS - now 5 could never have them but we buy them now.

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 14:00

BalloonSlayer - the brand ones had butter in them last week, and whey powder?!

Maz007 · 26/08/2012 14:45

Just goes to show you need to re-check things periodically to make sure they haven't changed...

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 15:00

As an aside, Coleman's seafood sauce is dairy free but the supermarket own brands aren't, if that helps anyone.

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 15:02

Really annoyed me that the dietician can give me a list of 'safe' foods for DS1 who is GF due to coeliac, but can't do the sane for dairy allergies.

Maybe I will write a list and post it on here, with others being able to add to and take away, when recipes change.

Will give me something to do when the older 3 are back at school.

IAmOptimusPrime · 26/08/2012 15:04

Pom bears did used to have milk powder in them, I think it is a recent change so I would still check the ingredients.

I wish I had a friend like yours. My ds is allergic to dairy and eggs and has been since he was a baby so you'd think at 6 my friends would remember and maybe cater for him but no!

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2012 17:31

Couthy just checked mine - "Original Jammie Dodgers" red packet, (Burton's Foods) - best before 2/3/13 - no butter or whey but a "may contain" warning, which I ignore. I bought them a month or so back, so they must have added them again since then. The buggers.

Thanks for the warning. Thanks Although I do usually check every time.

Currently have a "query" in with a crisp company about some crisps which DS had a reaction to which are not supposed to contain milk.

CouthyMow · 26/08/2012 18:37

My shopping takes me HOURS. I have to say, it might be that there was a MAY CONTAIN warning on, but I have to be careful even with them, as DS3 reacts to even the smallest traces. I'd check the packet, cos I could be wrong!

Which crisps, btw? Will avoid for now!

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2012 18:52

If you have remembered butter and whey rather than milk then it probably wasn't a may contain. I expect they have changed the recipe back.

The crisps are Seabrooks crisps, salt and vinegar. They don't even have a "may contain" on, they are supposed to be vegan. DS had never had them before and half an hour after he had eaten them he said "I feel really tired, I can hardly keep my eyes open" and I took one look at him and they were all swollen up, and he was blotchy too but nothing like as bad as his last reaction, it wasn't too bad a one at all, considering.

The company have been really nice and helpful, and I have just sent the whole six-pack bag back to be tested. It might not be them. But I gave DS the same meal minus the crisps the next day and nothing happened, (although the chicken I gave him came out of a different packet because they'd finished it, but it was the same stuff IYSWIM). I have been in this situation so often now, and it's always been the same - milk in something, although he is also allergic to egg and nuts.

I don't have an axe to grind about it - I have practically run out of energy with this sort of thing - I just want them checked and if they do contain milk an alert sent out for the sake of more allergic people than my DS - like yours!

InMySpareTime · 30/08/2012 22:20

Walkers crisps are milk free except for cheese and onion or salt and vinegar. All the meat ones in the multipack are fine (I was very surprised to find that out).
Sliced ham is generally fine (breaded is most likely to contain milk/egg)
Vitalite dairy free spread is better for baking than pure spread.
Homous and salsa do not contain milk or eggs.
