CMP & egg allergy - what can I use to stick breadcrumbs to fishcakes etc?

Simple as that really! DS is 13 months and now completely refusing to be spoon fed but am running out of options! Have seen a few nice ideas for fishcakes, little balls etc but they all require dipped in egg before rolling in breadcrumbs. Any idea what else might make the crumbs stick? Thanks in advance!

Afraid I have no idea what CMP means, but I saw a recipe yesterday that used pesto for sticking breadcrumbs on. Might that be ok? Specifically it was red pesto for chicken dipper things, but i think green pesto goes quite nicely with fish.

whatinthewhatnow · 10/07/2012 17:02

well, i've used mayonnaise for chicken, which obv has egg in it, but I reckon cream cheese is about the same consistency, so maybe that would work? i would dip in flour first. might be quite tasty too!

Bundlejoycosysweet · 10/07/2012 17:06

Not tried this but just thought maybe mixing flour and water to make a sticky paste might work?

I'm sure you realise but just in case don't use pesto as it has Parmesan cheese in it.

TouTou · 10/07/2012 17:08

I'm egg allergic. What I do is roll the thing (usually with me it's chicken, but you can roll your balls!) in flour first, then milk, then the breadcrumbs. It works perfectly.

Seona1973 · 10/07/2012 17:09

CMP is cows milk protein so cheese would be off the list too. From googling some people say to dip in oil or milk (you could use non-dairy milk substitute)

TouTou · 10/07/2012 17:10

Oh, sorry, I didn't realise there was a cowmilk problem. Could you use soya milk?

TodaysAGoodDay · 10/07/2012 17:12

Watching thread with interest. DS is albumen allergic. Need ideas for coating things, cakes, etc.

Seona1973 · 10/07/2012 17:13

you can also use an egg replacer powder. Have also found this: 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed and 3 tablespoons water = 1 egg.

Seona1973 · 10/07/2012 17:14

p.s. my ds's friend gets egg replacer stuff on prescription

insancerre · 10/07/2012 17:16

olive oil? or melted soya margarine?
I make home made chicken nuggets for dd with melted marg (ordinary) and crunched up crisps
the crisps are obvioulsy not very healthy for a baby but the crisps always stick to the chicken and I never use egg, just melted marg or sometimes olive oil, so breadcrumbs should stick too

zgaze · 10/07/2012 17:19

I've made breaded things with soya yogurt just because there was nothing else in, it tasted fine!

barleysugar · 10/07/2012 17:25

You can dip them in melted margarine (I would use butter but obviously that's dairy) then straight into crumbs. I find they actually bake up really nicely and crisp this way too- no frying needed!

whatinthewhatnow · 10/07/2012 18:35

oh sorry, didn't realise what cmp was. anything sticky then - flour and water?

mumblecrumble · 10/07/2012 18:38

We use tomato ketchup, it wasin an I can cool recipe book.

Pootles2010 · 10/07/2012 18:57

Sorry didn't realise what cmp was! You could make up batch of pesto without parmasan? Kids seem to love it.

abigboydidit · 10/07/2012 21:11

Thanks for the ideas. Have tried soy milk but it didn't really work. Tomato sauce and melted vitalite both sound good options though. Egg replacement powder sounds intriguing - will need to check that out.

Thanks all!

a selection of egg replacers

heliotrope · 10/07/2012 21:31

Mayo sounds about the right consistency actually although can't use because of egg - but there are vegan mayos around which are actually OK - granovita do one - try holland and barrett if you wanted some. I might try it!

Fry lite works.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 10/07/2012 22:15

Children who are CMP intolerant are generally intolerant to soya too...( according to my daughters paediatric dietician )

I'm sorry I have no solutions to the breadcrumbs - although iv just thought about polenta ....

Both of mine were intolerant to CMP and soya

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 10/07/2012 22:20

Sorry I thought you meant as a replacement for the bread crumbs ...

We couldn't use shop made bread because it contains soya as a preservative.

We were told by dietician that eggs were not classed as dairy - ours were fine with egg from 12 months.

From 12 months you can start to "challenge" the intolerance - most children are fine by 5.

I managed to wean both of mine slowly onto dairy by 18 months.

freefrommum · 11/07/2012 09:03

Nanny I just wanted to point out that an allergy is different to an intolerance and should not be 'challenged' without medical supervision as it can be life threatening. Sorry to sound preachy but I just didn't want anyone reading this thread to think they can start giving their child foods they are allergic to from 12mths.

cejoy101 · 11/07/2012 09:07

I use the egg replacer whisked up with water. It is the Ogran one and it does resemble whisked up egg white - it works well.

Be wary of pesto - many of them have egg derivatives which you wouldn't expect.

I think Sacla Organic is ok but you should double check before using.

cejoy101 · 11/07/2012 09:08

Just realised pesto probably has cheese so irrelevant to you even if egg free - sorry op.
