DD (2.8) is severely dairy, soya & oats intolerant...

Her pead today is setting up blood test for coeliacs and more skin prick tests for allergies etc as she has constant diarrea (sp)

Also she mentioned that she thinks DD is overweight Sad She weight 2.1 stone and is 74cms tall.

She is having a blood test for possible coeliacs tomorrow...

Does she sound over weight?

Also I am wondering if being slightly heavy/chunky could be a side effect of coeliacs...

can't give her soya milk at all as she is severely intolerant and she had soya (by accident) last weekend and came out in a rash so it may have developed into an allergy Sad

Calcium wise I think she eats well I just need to learn to say "no more" iyswim Sad

What are you doing re her hypermobility?

Ds is hypermobile and had physio once he started walking. Lots of different exercises plus insoles in his shoes and swimming. At your dd's age he was the same. Fell over all the time - came last in every race at nursery sports days. I was told to ensure he did lots and lots of exercise to ensure his muscles were strong.

Now he is 6 you would hardly notice any difference between him and his friends. He still has insoles but no physio. He probably won't be able to play contact sports but there is a huge difference between how I expected him to develop and how he has.

Kale, cabbage, brocoli and most green veg give plenty of calcium so don't worry. Don't be sad you didn't know. I am sad that you have got to this age and your health visitor hasn't said anything about how to compensate with her diet Sad I'm a student HV and know this.

She has just finished 6mths physio for her hypermobility and we have exercises etc. She has got much better over the summer....

She wears boots/shoes with plenty of ankle support (although I have to buy them myself)

I have heard it is very common for children who have coeliacs to be intolerant to dairy/lactose so I am hoping that maybe thats the case iyswim.

She cannot have a calcium supplement as when she had one (a syrup) she reacted to it and got diarrea (sp) Sad

TBH I am just soooo pissed off that it has taken until she is 2.8 for all this to be investigated and her weight to be mentioned for the first time Angry

I don't know anything about hypermobility, but wondered if something like this backpack might be helpful at all in aiding the walks to school.

My ds has used one since he was one, and the red handle on the top as well as the subtle reins 'lead' are excellent for preventing falling over as you can keep a grip on them. It's definitely helped my ds to do lots of long walks to the point where he has barely sat in the buggy for months. He also really enjoys 'pushing' the buggy with one hand, so at the moment I take it out for very long walks, and although he would rarely go in it, it's there as a safety net and gives him something to attach to while I'm a bit less mobile than usual.

Surely height and weight should be in proportion though- if a child is on the 50th percentile for weight then they should be on the 50th for height as well.

The percentiles are not a good guide of appropriate weight- bmi is flawed but a much better guide.

I would think that being shorter means that the healthier weight should also be lower for that child. My dd is 25th percentile for weight and 25th percentile for height. On the bmi calculator she comes out as bang in the middle of the healthy weight band!

Shorter children shouldn't really be any stockier than their peers.

I guess my concern is that she is not getting enough nutrients to grow taller iyswim despite getting enough in her diet to put weight on....

When my Ds finally got diag. coeliac he grew 12 cm in about 3 months and 2 shoe sizes

simpson · 03/10/2010 17:23

funny you should say that but thats another thing that does not grow...her feet!!!

She has been in size 5 for ages
