DD (2.8) is severely dairy, soya & oats intolerant...

Her pead today is setting up blood test for coeliacs and more skin prick tests for allergies etc as she has constant diarrea (sp)

Also she mentioned that she thinks DD is overweight Sad She weight 2.1 stone and is 74cms tall.

She is having a blood test for possible coeliacs tomorrow...

Does she sound over weight?

Also I am wondering if being slightly heavy/chunky could be a side effect of coeliacs...

According to that DD is massively over weight Sad Shock

She does not look it to me tbh though...

TBh she does suffer from loads of intolerances etc so am just wondering if they are bloating her iyswim.

She has also just had blood tests to check her thyroid...

How does she look compared to her peers? According to that chart ds is in the middle of the healthy range but he actually looks quite skinny compared to a lot of his friends.

KnickKnack · 02/10/2010 22:08

Have only seen one photo of your daughter (on FB, she's on a swing, photo posted April)...she doesn't look overweight at all, not skinny, but far from overweight.

simpson · 02/10/2010 22:10

TBH the main difference is that she is quite a bit shorter than them so a bit stockier iyswim.

I think she has not got to the stage where she has slimmed out yet iyswim.

She only walked at 21mths so I think it could still be puppy fat...

She does eat a lot though but its all healthy iyswim

Also because there are so many things she can't eat I let her have as much veg as she wants etc...

Ds walked at 22 months. His shape didn't change at all and hasn't now he is 6. He has always been lean but he does self limit what he eats, eg if he is full it doesn't matter if his favourite food is on offer he won't eat it. Even if it the last mouthful of something he has been eating. I wish I had his willpower!

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:15

She does seem tiny for her age, is she taking after short parents? There is a huge discrepancy between her centiles if that is correct. I would check her height again if she looks ok. I can understand on the measurements why they have said this but I find the height difficult to believe Hmm

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:19

If the measurements are correct then she is overweight. Unfortunately puppy fat is a small myth. Ideally children need proportion to be healthy not a set weight. How much activity/ walking/running/dancing/ trampoline/swim etc does she do compared to watching tv/drawing/table activities?

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:21

Does she still use a buggy? If so its time to reserve it for really long journeys, walk her to shop, park and more activity. Don't put her on a diet, there is no need, just get out and about more if possible.

simpson · 02/10/2010 22:25

she does a lot of running around etc & goes on trampoline but unfortunately she is severely hypermobile so falls over a lot

She has massive bump on her forehead from walking back from school run yesterday...although she is improving...

I don't drive so admit I do use buggy quite a bit so maybe I should use it less and get us walking more Blush

Height is definately right, she is a titch that way....still wearing 1yr clothes etc...

Her dad is not hugely tall....

OP posts:
Lougle · 02/10/2010 22:27

Are you sure she is 74cms? That puts her massively below the 0.4th centile for height.

Her weight isn't high, it is approaching the 50th Centile.

It is her height which is making her 'overweight', not her weight, IYSWIM.

My 17 month old DD is 82cm. My DD2 is 3.1 and is 94cm.

Lougle · 02/10/2010 22:28

Sorry, I see you have confirmed her height.

simpson · 02/10/2010 22:28

Height is right I beleive....

Pead took ages doing it....

TBH if she suddenly had a growth spurt and grew a couple of cms then that would probably evwn her out

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:30

Simpson I'm really sorry, I didn't want to be mean but I looked at her centiles and would have said the same as the person you saw. I do however understand as a mum and ex childminder how it is to lead busy lives and multiple school runs with little time. It is difficult and even more so now winter is coming, especially on a budget with the economy as it is. All you can do is get rid of the buggy for short distances or make her walk most of it and push the buggy, get her to hold onto it. Smile

simpson · 02/10/2010 22:30

Thing is she does have health problems which I don't think are being considered..possible coeliacs, multiple intolerances/allergies etc..

Maybe the lack of nutrients mean she won't grow as fast Sad

OP posts:
Lougle · 02/10/2010 22:31

She would need to grow 15cms for her weight centile to match her height centile.

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:31

It would help but because there is a vast difference thats why they are concerned. HV's allow up to 2 centile difference to allow for growth spurts, after that they worry Sad

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:36

I just wonder if you are over compensating and worrying that she isn't eating enough....obviously all food has calories and therefore even healthy food in large quantities will add weight. A guide about portion size is that a portion is her fist closed of each thing i.e. meat and 3 veg = 4 fists, pasta and bolognese = 4 fists. Snack 1 fist. HTH and no more than 2 snacks per day.

simpson · 02/10/2010 22:37

We have dietician appt early Nov so will bring it up if she doesn't...

She is on neocate and is totally dairy, soya & oats free...

TBH all she really eats is fruit, veg & meat.

Snack wise its rice cakes/bread sticks/ apples etc

I do take on board that maybe she should walk more ie to do school run (we walk she is in buggy) for DS (5) etc...

OP posts:
simpson · 02/10/2010 22:41

thecaptain - that is it I think Sad

I am soooo worried about her lack of calcium/nutrients etc that if she asks for more veg (broccoli etc) I will give it to her....

I worry about her teeth/bones etc when she is an adult due to no cheese, yogurt etc....

Am I best to just keep what I am doing but make her walk more and reduce portion size for meals??

Snack wise she is fine, only has 1 rice cake in morning and an apple in the afternoon or the other way round iyswim Smile

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:45

Good luck sim, it might be useful to do a food diary with what and how much is eaten so you can visualise her diet. I know I have eating amnesia and forget things like latte, hot choc. Not suggesting she drinks these because of the intolerances, just that we do sometimes forget things we eat. I hasten to add I am not a skinny bean Grin

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:47

Just give the correct portion sizes in 3 meals and 2 snacks. Give multivitamins in drops and exercise and it should level out Smile

thecaptaincrocfamily · 02/10/2010 22:49

I would give her a little bit of fruit with the rice cake and curb the other portions so she isn't hungry starving at meals. Can you do rice pud with soya milk?
