My DD is severely intolerant to dairy, soya & oats.

She gets a sore tummy, diarrea (sp) and lethargic if she eats any of the above...

She has been free of the above foods for a while now...

Today we went to pizza hut and I was told she should be ok with the fish fingers on the menu which had vegetable extracts in them.

Anyway she ate them and potato wedges & ketchup (which I forgot to check Blush)

A while later (maybe 30mins) she had bright red cheeks, forehead & chin.

At first I put it down to her being hot or teething etc...

When we got home I gave her some piriton and within 10mins it was going down....

Is it possible that she is now allergic to something?? Probably soya....

intolerences and allergies trigger a different repsonse in the body.

however its possible your dd has developed an allergy to something else.

pizza hut do have ingrediant lists for all their products and its one of the places i happily take dd4 to who has egg, milk and nut allergies. she has the kids spag bol, garlic bread and wedges.

simpson · 26/09/2010 22:26

I have to say they were pretty pants in helping and had no ingredient list

I just thought maybe as she has not had soya for so long she may now react different iyswim.

But I was rather lax with the ketchup Blush Sad which was smeared all over her face...

Veg extract I think could be soya Sad

Her intolerances have always been severe and soya has always been the worst Sad

grrr they should have the list there. but maybe its because my BIL was a manager there that i got it with no questions asked.

simpson · 26/09/2010 22:34

TBH its the soya that is soooo hard.

If it was not for that life would be soooo much easier Sad

Although unlike your DD she is ok with egg which suprises me!!

we have been lucky in that dd4 isnt allergic to soya. she has been clear on skin pricks and rast tesing for it. i know that milk and soya allergies go hand in hand. i dont know how it works with intolerences though.

wil lgo search the pizza hut site and see what i can come up with for you.

misdee · 26/09/2010 22:37

here

misdee · 26/09/2010 22:38

the fish goujans contain soy protein

simpson · 26/09/2010 22:43

why the f**k did they not tell me Angry

Their exact words were veg extract!!! Which in fairness I should not have risked but she was starving & whinging etc and i was stressed Blush

Thats what she ate Sad

TBH it was a spur of the moment trip normally I would have checked menu on line etc but my dad was stuck on M4 for over 3hrs today and we all just wanted something quick to eat....

It will teach me to be more careful Blush

She has not had soya for 18mths or so beforehand.

if she is now allergic would it show up in blood test??

We have pead appt on thursday (thank God!!) so can push for that if need be...

OP posts:
misdee · 26/09/2010 22:47

because IME most waiting staff dont get allergies or intolerences Angry. I have actually walked out before, or just ordered dd4 a plate of chips if starving, before hot footing it to maccy d's where i know i can get her something safe.

its a PITA but i kow i can be impulsive when it comes to dd4.

allergy rash tend to be blotchy rther than just red and hot. can intolerences increase body temp a bit and make her sore as it works through her system? I hope she doesnt suffer too much from this exposure.

misdee · 26/09/2010 22:48

yes, if she is now allergic, it will have triggered an IGE response and will show up in a blood/skin prick test. but as she has had piriton they may not test her on thursday. they like to keep them anti-histimine free for at least 5 days IME

simpson · 26/09/2010 22:54

there was like one big blotch on each cheek which was slightly raised iyswim

The blotch took up the whole cheek iyswim.

Its sooo hard especially as her older brother (5) is ok with everything and she likes to eat what he has

It was nowhere else on her body although I expect her skin on tummy to be very dry/scaly tomorrow now Sad

I even suggested Mcdonalds as she is ok with the fishfingers & chips there but my dad was not having it Hmm

Oh well, its my fault I should have insisted Sad

you live and learn. belive me, i have f*cked up a bit with dd4, and am usually careful. even kissing her after eating a yoghurt caused a reaction.

if it was blotchy, like a nettle rash or a welt, then def push for allergy testing as well.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 27/09/2010 09:01

Think it's possible for an intolerance to develop into an allergy, although a possibility is that the allergy has not always manifested itself?

My experience with DS is that he has a severe dairy and soya intolerance, but went anaphylactic to something or other when he managed to eat his sister's pizza.

His consultant felt it was worthwhile to test for presence of IgE, although this was negative.

As a tip, most fast food places have soya in food. The exceptions I have found are:

  • Ikea cafe
  • anywhere that serves Birds Eye fish fingers
  • grilled chicken fillets at Burger King

I did wait for about 30mins after getting home to see if it would go down by itself iyswim.

She had blood tests a good while ago (18mths??) which all came back negative...

Ilove - cheers for tip on burger king chicken fillets, do you just order that without the bread iyswim??

Well, we have just had the first horrid nappy...

Yeah, it's sometimes not on the menu, but ask for chicken fillets 'flame grilled.' I tend to stress, 'plain, no batter, just chicken' lest there be any confusion. They do it with the rest of the children's mean, with fries, drink etc.

They have an allergy list which is fairly accessible.

simpson · 27/09/2010 13:12

Oooh thanks for that!! Another treat she can have Grin

ATM its normally mcdonalds fish finger meal which she is ok with, but will be good to have somewhere else...

Can an intolerance turn into an allergy?

I don't know but you can certainly have a condition that presents as an intolerance for a long time before clearly becoming an allergy.

Since her teens my mum has been unable to eat chillis/sweet peppers. At first they gave her indigestion. Over time this got worse and worse so even the tiniest trace would give her severe stomach pain for 1 or 2 days. So she was careful never to eat them but would still sometimes prepare them for my dad/brother.

A few years ago she was chopping some chillis when she suddenly started wheezing/having difficulty breathing and then had what was basically an asthma attack (my mum is not and has never been asthmatic). V. frightening. Now she can no longer be in a room where raw chillis/peppers are being cut up without breathing problems. We don't know if her previous 'intolerance' was really always a (gastric) allergy, or whether it turned into one but in any case it really is an allergy now.

simpson · 30/09/2010 17:46

Well, we saw DD's pead today and thank goodness she is really pushing for an answer to all this

DD is back at the hospital tomorrow to have a blood test for coeliacs disease & I have to drop off 2 stool samples...

Then also she will have loads of skin prick tests for dairy, soya, wheat, house dust (pead thinks her constant runny nose is due to this)

Then if all this comes back negative we are being referred to chelsea & westminster hosp for a gut biopsy

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 30/09/2010 17:52

is it the fish that she is allergic to?

simpson · 30/09/2010 18:02

no its the soya in batter on the fish although this is the first time she has ever had a rash of any kind...

Normally she is just intolerant and gets diarrea (sp) and poos at least 5 or 6 times a day...

This is exactly the reaction DS gets when he eats ketchup, (possibly pollen aswell as gets it a lot in the summer months Sad)

He tested for IeG which was 14 overall with no clear reaction to tomatoes or peanuts. Pead said probably ketchup itself - the tomato mixed with something or another ingredient??

He only gets the hives on his face which made me question it but some people just only get it there.

Yes ask the pead - its the not knowing that bothers me so I empathise.

simpson · 30/09/2010 20:30

Funnily enough DD was eating ketchup with the fish

I am wondering whether I should ring the pead tomorrow now and add tomato to the list of things to test for....

OP posts:
mumbar · 01/10/2010 19:54

you can test for tomato but DS RAST test showed no clear reaction but he can't eat ketchup Sad

Loves 'melonaise' as he calls it Grin
