Do you actually want to stop?

Dizzydrizzy · 09/05/2026 19:24

Have you tried to stop yet?

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 09/05/2026 19:24

I’m a recovering alcoholic with many years of sobriety. I only stopped when I wanted sobriety more than I wanted to continue drinking. Do you really want to stop?

enok · 09/05/2026 19:26

I know I need to stop but at the moment am honestly enjoying wine and functioning the next day

I lost a friend a highly functioning alcoholic - she died of alcohol poisoning - just one day her body could not take it any longer she left behind a 13 year old and a 7 year old. Just letting you know.

enok · 09/05/2026 19:35

Thank you and appreciate this

Do you want help as in reasons to stop? We’d say in AA that alcohol is still working for you.

maftan · 09/05/2026 19:39

How much every day? Have you any signs of ill health effects yet, although liver damage can be asymptomatic - until it isn't. Anything health wise bothering you, or is it that you feel awful all round? Are there financial effects, or effects on your relationships?. What is making you think like this today?

enok · 09/05/2026 19:42

I am realising it's affecting lots of things

OP posts:
enok · 09/05/2026 19:43

My husband is very cross with me

OP posts:
maftan · 09/05/2026 19:52

Why do you think he's cross with you. Did he say?

enok · 09/05/2026 19:53

Yes he hates me drinking

OP posts:
maftan · 09/05/2026 20:06

You will only stop if YOU want to. Nothing anyone else says will make you stop just like that. If you feel you need and want to stop you must get outside help from GP, rehab, AA, counselling whatever it takes.

If you don't want to, then it might be the wine or your marriage. It is that stark isn't it? What do you want to do yourself, do you feel it's not as big a problem as others are making it to be? Denial is a big factor in addiction.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/05/2026 20:13

Your husband hates you drinking and is very cross with you. Is he not enough of a reason to stop? Do you respect him more than the wine? If not him, what would be your reason?

enok · 09/05/2026 20:14

Not sure but probably addicted

OP posts:
enok · 09/05/2026 20:19

So help please xx

OP posts:
maftan · 09/05/2026 20:30

You will get lots of help when you ask the right people. And only if you really want to. Do you want to stop today? If so, find a local AA meeting and go to it, either in person or online. Call the Samaritans for a non judgmental talk. Go to the GP asap, find local addiction counselling services in your area. It's not easy but you have to be willing.

enok · 09/05/2026 20:31

Yes I love him but he has his faults hence my love of wine

How much do you drink every day? That impacts whether you can just stop or need to taper and need medical help.

Do you actually want to stop drinking?

enok · 09/05/2026 20:35

@enoki need to cut down/quit drinking maybe we can support each other? I used to hardly drink dh has always been a big drinker but a few years of dealing with family trauma I now drink to much and to often

WillowD · 09/05/2026 20:41

Have a look at The Sinclair Method, particularly with Rethink Drink. It’s been life changing for me and it’s not an all or nothing approach - you can still drink but you can have control of it.

enok · 09/05/2026 20:42

Definitely can you pm me?

OP posts:
WillowD · 09/05/2026 20:44

What do you want to know about it? There is lots of info on the Rethink Drink website.
