I have a post over on chat about ruining Christmas Day for my family, and I finally have reached rock

www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5465338-anyone-else-ruin-christmas-because-they-were-drunk

I have cancelled all upcoming Christmas plans over next few days, but obviously I have to learn how to socialise without alcohol at some point

if anyone fancies keeping me company please join me for some virtual ongoing support!

I went to the AA. It was full of people who understood.

Hi OP. I gave up alcohol in February and was absolutely convinced I would never enjoy socialising again and that giving up alcohol would be miserable. I could not have been more wrong. My life is SO much better now and I enjoy social events so much more as I am actually present and not thinking about the next drink. Do what you need to to get through the next few days and weeks but trust me when I say a much better life is waiting for you on the other side. You need to put in the work though, find books and podcasts that resonate and make being sober your biggest priority for now
Good luck, you can do this 💪

Thank you! I have already ordered a book from Amazon and am following some TikTok accounts.

I have found an online support group but I will look into an actual meeting group too

I really like Alcohol Explained for a book and found the podcast Sober Powered really helpful. There is also a great episode of the Huberman Lab podcast called What Alcohol Does to Your Body

Personally I am drawn to the science of Alcohol and why I drink like i do, rather than reading about other people's experiences of drinking but everyone is different- find what works for you

Hi I have followed your other post as unfortunately this has been me for too long. Up to the point that my middle dd has told me she is worried about me ruining her wedding. I really want to stop drinking and would love to be a support buddy to you

I joined an AA group online using Zoom - “Zoo Crew 22”. I haven’t drunk since I joined them in April 2024. I had to learn to be kind to myself.

Hi @Newyearnewmewoooop - i remember your post on chat. How are you doing? There are a couple of busy dry Jan / dry 100 days threads going on if you fancied joining?

Try reading Becoming a Sober Rebel by Louisa Evans. I’ve been a heavy drinker for decades, have read so may quit lit books but nothing seemed to really make much difference. I started in 2025 trying to have days off but they were so hard and I was just white knuckling it and feeling frantic, had to totally avoid any situation involving drinking, even cooking!
After reading this book I am now 15 days sober, not massive but the longest I ever have been in my adult life. The big thing is how different it is this time and I think it’s down to finally making a mindset shift.
I know I still have a long way to go and will have to keep working at it daily but I finally have hope.
