Calling time on wine: 100 days sober - starting 01/01/26

reset100 · 27/12/2025 09:06

My wine drinking has slowly spiralled into a daily habit and I’m calling time on it. No drama, no rock bottom - just the realisation that it’s become a crutch and I want out of the swirl.

From 1st January, I’m committing to 100 days sober and I’d love others to join me. This isn’t about moderation or “just weekends” - it’s about a clean break and supporting each other to go completely alcohol-free for the full 100 days.

If alcohol has crept in as a daily default, if you’re tired of negotiating with yourself every evening, or if you simply want a proper reset with people who get it, you’re very welcome here.

No judgement. No pressure. Just accountability, honesty, and support.

@fragglerockless I love that freixenet too.
I hear you regarding the doubting yourself. It's common I think. We don't always have the confidence to think we can do it. That's why it's good to build sober muscles.
Every victory you have, make a note ( like an af Friday night for example), and your belief in yourself will grow.
Think how good you'll feel tomorrow too 💪

I’m in too..horribly hungover today. Was dry retching in the toilet earlier, and cannot even remember watching the fireworks on tv last night…blackout drunk.
slept terribly and feel poisoned today.
Always do Dry January, last year did 3 months and the year before 4.
10th April is my birthday, so makes perfect sense to aim for that 💪

I’ve been there lots of times. It’s just awful and sometimes I feel like my eyeballs are going to pop out of my head! I’m really focussing on this mantra - I never have to feel that bad ever again. It’s not like it’s caused through illness, it’s purely self-inflicted from ingesting too much poison.

2026x · 02/01/2026 16:56

Urgh, it’s 5pm, I’m trying to cook dinner and my 2 and 4yo are fighting. I could murder a wine. This can’t be the way I deal with my life though. I’ve opened an AF beer and scoffed a couple of Christmas chocolates… I think I’ll be ok.

Goandygo · 02/01/2026 17:01

@2026x great that you had the af beer in 💪

I’ve been there - it’s the most dreadful feeling isn’t it? Alcohol really is a poison. Hope you’re feeling better today.

Thank you @freshstart2026
I do feel better today, but still groggy and my stomach is all messed up.
Had a tiff with a friend on WhatsApp earlier which has knocked me back too. I suffer with my MH and drinking is absolutely the worst thing for me 😞. The physical effects are horrendous, but the mental collapse is worse.
I hope to be feeling much better in the next few days though m and am absolutely determined to stay off alcohol for at least the next 3 months.

Youdontseehow · 02/01/2026 17:17

Evening all - hope everyone has had a good, sober day…..but if not, still keep posting for support!

I’ve been doing so much thinking about my drinking and why I drink to excess. And reading soooooo much about it.

A few light bulb moments for me which may seem obvious and deep down I already knew these things but I’ve just REALLY realised;

  • alcohol is designed to incapacitate you - hence you can’t drive after drinking
  • alcohol is designed to get you addicted hence we have difficulties giving it up
  • alcohol is a toxin hence it causes hangovers and a whole range of physical and psychological problems
  • alcohol negatively affects every organ of your body and your mental health
  • there is in reality no safe amount of alcohol to consume - drinking guidelines are there to limit the harm you are doing to yourself by drinking and to keep you drinking - producers want you to have long drinking careers so they advise limits so you keep on drinking (the ”red wine is good for you” myth has been totally debunked)

As I say, I knew all this but buried it deep inside I guess, because I enjoyed how it made me feel….until I didn’t.

Absolutely. I was with my best friend on NYD and she said I should mentally photograph how wretched I was feeling and remember it any time I feel like a drink would be a good idea.
And yes to the eyeballs popping out feeling..just horrendous. Hope you’re doing ok x

I’m doing good thanks. Hangover from hell on Boxing Day which took 3 days to recover completely from. Started googling “signs of alcohol poisoning” and “signs of liver failure”. Im just never going there again. And the best thing is, I don’t need to!

I remember a quote from a podcast with Holly Whitaker (quit like a woman) when asked what was the best thing about not drinking and she said “never having to take that last drink”. So true

CNDflag · 02/01/2026 17:46

Do you normally do Dry Jan? I’ve done it for the past 5 or 6 years, always feel so much better afterwards, and then fall back into bad habits for the rest of the year 🙄

Misspost · 02/01/2026 17:51

I normally have a glass of something about now and the pull is quite strong.
I’ve made a green tea mock cocktail with a fresh mint leaf on the side. I can’t say it has the same effect but It’s distracting me - just a little.

My neighbour called over the fence “Keep the faith!”When I went to put the rubbish out, just now.
(Another distraction technique).
He’s doing dry January too and he’s an aging Northern Soul Fan.
It resonated with me!

cravingmilkshake · 02/01/2026 17:59

I’ve booked in for a spin class at 8pm to get past the cravings . Can’t cancel now otherwise I will get charged .

Happytosseyouafteralltheseyears · 02/01/2026 18:07

Yes this is the killer time! DH gone out and bet he’ll have a glass of wine or two! He’s better at moderating than me! I’m trying to set myself goals over the day. Tidying all the washing and will soon get onto the kitchen. Bought Nozecco and soft drinks but stupidly I have wine being delivered tonight!😏😩. Last year I only lasted 2 days! All
sober here say aye!!!

freshstart2026 · 02/01/2026 18:52

Friday night is the hardest time of the week for me, but I’m determined not to cave 😬

ProudCoralBear · 02/01/2026 19:06

I’d like to join please, your first post describes exactly my situation. Been a binge drinker for most of my adult life but in last few months daily drinking at home has got out of hand and I’m starting to worry that I won’t actually be able to stop. Day 1 for me today but only had a small sip of wine yesterday and then poured it away.

Infortheduration · 02/01/2026 19:23

I'm going to have a pineapple juice and a night tea. Not sure why but pineapple juice feels like the right thing to hit the spot...

Chai tea and a slice of Christmas cake for me!
Tomorrow will be a bit more difficult as I’ve been invited to a Bucks Fizz Brunch . But Orange juice and fizzy water will be much better for me. 💪

SwiftyFifty · 02/01/2026 19:35

So I didn’t cave! I actually had a really good time with two Peroni 0.00
i was feeling sorry for myself and miserable going there but once I got the peroni I was fine and had almost a better time as didn’t talk sh@t and will remember everything! I am very proud of mysekf and have no urge at all now for the demon wine. I kept thinking of how great and pleased with myself I will feel tomorrow!
Hope everyone else feeling ok

freshstart2026 · 02/01/2026 20:10

Well done @SwiftyFifty - that is very impressive! 👏

Socialising is probably my biggest issue when it comes to alcohol - I have major social anxiety and have always used alcohol as a crutch to get through social situations. I think I’m quite a dull person and worry others think so too. Alcohol gives me the confidence to chat to others.

2026x · 02/01/2026 20:33

Well done everyone making it through night 2 (especially @SwiftyFiftywho managed to stick it out in the pub!). I was feeling pretty overwhelmed at 5pm (the witching for me) with 2 fighting children to look after but I had an AF beer and when my OH got home I went for a run in the dark in zero degrees. My breath was freezing as I chugged along and it felt amazing to be outside running (albeit slowly) instead of inside drinking.

freshstart2026 · 02/01/2026 21:34

I’m tucked up in bed after another dry day. One thing I’ve noticed is how tired I am by 9.30ish. I think drinking can mask feelings of tiredness. When you’re sober you’re more able to hear what your body is telling you (in my case, get more rest!)

Feelthejoy · 02/01/2026 22:25

Pomegranate juice is a delicious tannic alternative to wine. I like it hot! Maybe check for unwanted effects if you're on meds though. I'm in 💪

stayathomegardener · 02/01/2026 22:43

I would like to think I don’t need to do this so it would be easy right?
I think I have had a drink every evening for the last 3 months.

Newyearnewmewoooop · 02/01/2026 23:34

Day 7 for me, after ruining Christmas Day with my behaviour. I’m trying for complete sobriety, I can’t moderate and have ruined too many occasions and upset my children too many times

chatgptsbestmate · 03/01/2026 07:05

Good morning everyone! I hope you're all doing well ❤️

Today is potentially a difficult day for me. All of my children go back to work after the Christmas period and they all live in London, which is 5 hours away from me

I love living on my own and have no problem with it, but this day, each year, I always feel sad (because the kids have all left) and I mask it with alcohol in the evening (after they've gone)

But not today. I'm going to be strong! 🥰 And feel the feeling 😳

freshstart2026 · 03/01/2026 07:44

Aww, that is hard @chatgptsbestmate ! Could you maybe watch a film or two on the sofa to distract you?

My sleep wasn’t brilliant last night - again it took me ages to nod off (though that might be partly due to DH’s snoring 😡). Even so, I’ve woken up feeling refreshed and am about to enjoy a smug morning coffee in bed!

I’m hoping to have a really productive day sorting things around the house - usually I’d be too hungover to get much done or would be heading to the pub in the afternoon.

Wishing everyone a wonderful sober Saturday!
