(Mostly) Soberistas - heavier drinkers trying to moderate

We did Sober October. It helped. We tried really hard, reduced our alcohol intake, and want to continue to not drink relentlessly. A few drinks at an event or meal out - fine. A bottle or more a night for no reason other than habit and we like being drunk - trying to avoid. We try, we improve, sometimes we cock it up and start again. Join us!

Finally a dry day without wind! Cloudy but I'll take it. Managed to go to Asda and a petrol station and come out without wine...truly remarkable for early afternoon on a Saturday! Might not manage tomorrow but today is going strong. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I was offered a glass of wine today and turned it down - quite easy because I needed to drive. Fancy one tonight, though. Haven’t drunk at home since I started this, so I’m not sure about opening a bottle and having it calling to me all night!

Yes I'm much happier without an open bottle in the house 🙈

Five days with no alcohol after a horribly heavy weekend last week. Feeling so much better but I did so want a glass of wine or cider after the horrors of putting flat pack furniture together this afternoon. But I resisted.

Springadorable · 15/11/2025 19:33

Days 4 and 5 are always tricky for me. I feel better from not drinking and up for a drink...well done for resisting!

Morning.

Getting over the 4/5 day ‘I feel better, so I’ll have a drink’ is the tough part.

I’ve had a small glass of wine this week and one G&T this last week. For next week, I’ll not have the glass of wine as I didn’t really need it. I did enjoy the G&T.

I’ve found a non alcoholic drink I actually like and isn’t sweet!!! It’s call Hip Pop - comes in cans. It’s Komboucha based but very mild, not sugar laden (it’s low calorie, and no artificial sweeteners etc). Not a bad price either - especially if compared to non alcoholic wine or an actual bottle of wine.

Hope everyone is okay.

Springadorable · 19/11/2025 10:08

@needastrongoneagain ooh will take a look at those, thanks!

Doing ok ish here - I seem to now be ok doing the week (which is a big improvement on drinking most days) but then have accidentally got into a routine of having a bottle once a week which then leaves me feeling shit and gobbling all the sugar. So going to try and ride that urge out this week.

How's everyone else?

@Springadorable I'm in a similar position, I'm doing fine at not drinking on weekdays but still splurging a bit too much at the weekends. I'm conscious that we're getting closer to Christmas (when there is more temptation around) so want ot try and make some better wekedn habits in the next few weeks.

@needastrongoneagain thanks for the tip on the Hip Pop - I've seen it on Amazon but is it in supermarkets as well?

Springadorable · 19/11/2025 11:53

@ImFineItsAllFine one of my issues is that it still feels like an absolute treat to open a bottle at home on a weekend afternoon/early evening and enjoy a "glass" (aka bottle), especially if I'm home alone. So as much as I tell myself I will only drink at events etc I'm struggling to get past this hurdle 🤦

I really like a non alcoholic drink called mother root-it’s a ginger drink with capsaicin in. It has a bit of a kick like an alcoholic drink but again isn’t too sweet.

CantThinkOfAnotherUsernane · 20/11/2025 06:39

This is the thread for me!
Managed to cut down last month but over the last week or so I’ve had a drink pretty much every night. I need to rein it in before Christmas so that starts today, I’m also dieting and the wine really doesn’t help with the weight loss.
I find if I don’t drink on a night I get far more done rather than slobbing on the sofa with a glass of wine. Tonight my plan is to have a long shower and start wrapping the Christmas presents

Come and join!! Yes, it does have a very sneaky habit of sneaking up doesn't it! I got a few presents wrapped the other day, felt very wholesome

Afternoon.

I like Mother Root too. My tip would be that you really do only need a tiny amount otherwise it’s too strong, even diluted as it should be with tonic water (or similar).

I got the Hip Pop direct on a special deal, but you can definitely get it from Ocado so should think the other supermarkets will sell in too.

How is everyone? Still moderating?

I’ve managed my goal of one night in the last week where I had a drink, two small glasses of wine, last night. The previous week I had a glass of wine on one other night too. I slept like crap and felt really negative all day today so I’ll cut that two glasses to one next week, or maybe wait until 6th December where I’m meeting some old work colleagues for a drink before they go on for a meal (I didn’t fancy it - one of those all the meat you can eat type places, I’m not vegetarian but that’s still too much for me after trying it last year).

In a complete about turn, I’m actually looking forward to NOT drinking tonight!

CosyAutumn · 22/11/2025 09:35

Morning everyone! Happy weekend!
I’ve had a tough week but somehow managed to stay off the booze.
We had to put a pet to sleep. It hit me a lot harder than I thought it would but the circumstances were sudden and horrible, and possibly it was ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back’.
I’m quite tempted to start decorating the house for Christmas in an attempt to cheer myself up.
I’m looking forward to the Blackpool episode of Strictly tonight.
What’s everyone up to and how’s everyone getting on?

ThePoshUns · 22/11/2025 10:37

Ah sad news @CosyAutumn, I dread that day and with a 13 yr old dog know it’s not far away. Well done on staying strong. I gave in and drank a bottle of cremant last night. Am not drinking this evening as have offered to pick DH up from the rugby / evening out with friends.

Springadorable · 26/11/2025 20:05

@CosyAutumn losing a pet is horrendous. You never really get over it, you just learn to live with it better.

Not going to lie, had a bit of a wobble this weekend and had more than I wanted to. Kids were away so hubby and I went out which was lovely, but my moderate drinking got a little carried away.

Back to being sensible now - November is nearly done and it's time for the white knuckle ride that is December!

It’s December! What’s everyone planning, drink wise?

I'm planning on sticking to once a week or less, ideally at an event out of the house. That's the aim, anyway...

Happy new year Soberistas (or not so soberista in my case!). Any one up for a dry Jan? I very much threw the towel in in December (and much of November) so need a proper reset

ThePoshUns · 01/01/2026 09:11

Hi I am hosting a party this afternoon and will drink but planning on doing dry January after that. I drank far too much on Xmas day and want to avoid doing the same today. Was able to restrict myself to 2 glasses of wine last night which I’m pleased with.

Theres quite an active 100 days thread so we could hop over there?

needastrongoneagain1 · 01/01/2026 19:28

Was just popping in to say the 100 day thread is very active and probably flexible re specifically needing to be dry for that time 😊

Springadorable · 01/01/2026 20:05
