(Mostly) Soberistas - heavier drinkers trying to moderate

We did Sober October. It helped. We tried really hard, reduced our alcohol intake, and want to continue to not drink relentlessly. A few drinks at an event or meal out - fine. A bottle or more a night for no reason other than habit and we like being drunk - trying to avoid. We try, we improve, sometimes we cock it up and start again. Join us!

@Greenfingers37 Oh I'd be so gutted and so tempted to go on my own. Well done for remaining AF, I'd have probably caved. x

@FiveShelties OMG I hope you're ok, how scary! I always stress about the things I can't see and wonder what's going on instead. x

Springadorable · 06/11/2025 15:52

A small achievement for others maybe, but I've just managed to avoid adding wine to a Tesco whoosh delivery 💪wouldn't have managed that without the support of you guys, I'd have just gone meh fuck it and added away!

Many thanks for your kind words @Springadorable @ThePoshUns @nowinetimeforme @needastrongoneagain @KK1983

I feel absolutely fine and realise I was lucky it was not a stroke. My GP rang yesterday and I have to have a Two Week Review on 21st so am hoping that goes well and I will be able to drive again. It was a four week stand down here for a TIA but it has just been reduced to a two week period which I am delighted about. Of course, the fact that I cannot drive makes me want to drive more😂

I thought I was invincible - obviously that was wrong. I walk a lot, drink stacks of water, eat healthily, BMI just under 25, don't smoke but drink too much wine so pretty easy to see what I need to concentrate on.

Have a fantastic week-end everyone.😁

ThePoshUns · 07/11/2025 07:19

@FiveSheltiesa wake up call for us all. I too think I can get away with drinking as like you I am fit and healthy in every other aspect of my life. Glad to know that you’re feeling better.

ImFineItsAllFine · 07/11/2025 12:59

I managed not to drink last night - Thursdays have always been a tricky one for me as DH doesn't work Fridays so he likes to have a drink or two in the evening. Pre sober october I'd always give in to temptation and join him even though I had work the next day.

So I'm feeling proud as it's Friday and I've had no alcohol since last Sunday -definitely couldn't have done it without the support on here 😊

@FiveShelties look after yourself and wishing you a swift recovery.

Ahhhhh - I fell at the hurdle you soared over! (Well done!) I was all set to crack open a fizzy water last night and my DP said, "I think I'll have a beer!" He drinks very little and this was enough to tip me over the edge and crack open a beer with him. He had 2 small beers (250ml) and I had 3 but that still only amounts to 4 units so not a bad 'moderation' night I guess but I probably should have stuck to the fizzy water given my consumption at the weekend. Oh well, trying not to hit the 'fuck it' button for the weekend and my MIL has just invited us over to dinner so I will definitely get offered a glass of wine. The thing is that i'll probably only get offered one glass (they are not mean they are just not big drinkers so they don't think of it - I could go and help myself but I tend not to) so I tend to have a drink or two before I go so I am not so sat there fixating on an empty glass 😂

ETA - one thing I am quite pleased about is that I seem to have really quashed the habit of drinking at home. I don't think about having a drink most days if I am just having a normal day at home which is a big improvement on where I was a couple of months ago.

CosyAutumn · 08/11/2025 12:31

Happy weekend! How’s everyone getting on?

needastrongoneagain · 08/11/2025 15:50

Doing okay here @CosyAutumn , two drinks in November so far, both glasses of wine. It was DH’s birthday yesterday so I had one with our meal but it was a measured one in a pub - which reminded me that my home small glasses of wine are probably not as small as that….might buy a measure thing.

That is massive progress @nowinetimeforme, it’s the same for me here too. I keep reminding myself of the way my thinking has changed around alcohol in a positive way, even if I’m not completely dry (yet).

We are out tonight at friends for a meal and I’m driving, but I didn’t sleep well last night anyway so probably wouldn’t fancy a drink even if I could. They are not big drinkers at all so it’s an easy win.

Hope everyone is okay too xx

ImFineItsAllFine · 08/11/2025 17:14

3 glasses of wine last night at home with DH - Friday is one of the days I'm allowing myself alcohol (as long as I'm not drinking alone). Chuffed that I stopped at 3 without wanting to finish the bottle.

Liverpool52 · 09/11/2025 15:47

Can just quietly sit and observe? I have such good weeks where I don't want to touch it and then this weekend.

But tomorrow is Monday. Xx

ThePoshUns · 09/11/2025 16:16

I’ve had a boozy weekend, out with friends Friday, a lovely curry last night that of course needed a lager or two. Going for a Sunday roast in a bit and I will have a red wine. I will
do better next weekend.

Haggisfish3 · 09/11/2025 16:25

hello I’m joining your thread! I have managed to cut down from half to a whole bottle of wine pretty much every night to now only drinking on a fri and sat and usually anojt one bottle of red a night. This weekend I have only had a bottle and a half. Might finish it tonight so it’s not there during the week. I sleep so much better during the week when o don’t drink. I really want to stop altogether-it’s such an engrained habit for me though.

Springadorable · 09/11/2025 17:18

The more the merrier - and feel free to dip in and out! @Haggisfish3 I hear you; I'm much better than I was, but as I'm currently half a bottle of red down I'm clearly not there yet. But that's over a week since my last drink so much better overall compared to my previous bottle (or more - a particular low point was three bottles 🙈) a night. I think we all have ups and downs, but life plods along and we need to be kind to ourselves.

I'm finding a big trigger is when I have a rest day lined up - I'm now running five times a week and hitting some bigger mileage but when I know I need a rest day my brain is just like, oooooh wine?!

Nighttimeistherightime · 10/11/2025 07:13

I’m going to join you! I’m drinking wine every night now and completely undoing all the good changes I’ve made to my diet! I hate feeling drunk and yet still pour every night! I’ve got high BP and cholesterol so should know better. It’s just wine for me as well- we have a cupboard full of spirits and my partner has beer in all the time but I’m not tempted at all by that. My sleep is horrendous and I’m not as sharp as I should be at work. If o can get past 8 o’clock , I’m not really tempted by wine, but God it’s a struggle!

needastrongoneagain · 10/11/2025 12:19

Afternoon.

Interesting re your rest day @Springadorable, I’m the opposite - it’s my hard run days that I most want to have a drink - like a deserve it or something psychologically.

Welcome new folk, all are welcome and none of us are perfect.

I'm doing okay here, still only two drinks thus far in November. Enjoying the clear head and generally feeling much better about myself physically and mentally.

KK1983 · 10/11/2025 15:59

Hey guys,
How's your monday? Everyone have a lovely weekend? x

CosyAutumn · 10/11/2025 18:29

I had a quiet and sober weekend.
Went out for a roast yesterday and the non-alcoholic cocktails were really nice and quite cheap.
Big multi-packs of fizzy pop are on offer in my supermarket so I bought four trays (I’m trying to wean myself off having a bottle of Nozeco a day).
The weather has been miserable all day here. Mondays are rubbish.

needastrongoneagain · 11/11/2025 11:14

Morning.

You are doing so well @CosyAutumn, well done.

I’m awaiting a delivery of some non alcoholic drinks, they came up on my feed. £20 for 12 tins - can’t remember the name without checking! I’ll report back. The non alcoholic mulled wine dupe was grim - far too sweet. I appreciate mulled wine is a little sweet but this was OTT.

My single unit measure came - I'm actually not as far off what I thought was a unit thankfully. We’ve some old wine glasses that are far more like one measure per glass than our newer ones. Some of the new ones are 3 times that.

3 days without a drink, and still on two for November.

Springadorable · 11/11/2025 12:34

@needastrongoneagain good going! And I'm a bit scared to be proactive and see what my measures actually count as 🙈

Haggisfish3 · 11/11/2025 20:48

I am adept at measuring out 125ml glasses of wine!

Another day of glorious sunshine rain. Delightful. Hope everyone is ticking along ok.

KK1983 · 14/11/2025 14:09

It's so cold, wet and windy here too. Storm Claudia needs to bugger off! Hope we're all doing ok - stay strong! x
